ROBERT ,H. MOORE, 'OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB TO AMERICAN CREOSOTING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,'A CORPORATION OF INDIANA. l
cAaUNLoADINe DEvIjE'.
To all ywhom t may concern.'
Be it known tha't I, ROBERT H. MOORE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Unloading De vices; and I do hereby declare the fo'llowing tobe a fully, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention isv to provide simple and highly eflicient means for unloading cars, trams or trucks, and 1s especially designed for use 1n connection with tie or 4 is a view in perspective with parts omitted.
Inasmuch as my present invention is primarily designed for timber treating plants it will be described accordingly, but it is to be understood thatthe-use of the invention is not restricted, since it may be employed `to advantage generallyin unloading cars or trams.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a car or buggy of known construction, such, for instance, as shown in' Letters Patent No.
805,214 issued to C. B; Lowry land R. Bern-- hard November 21, 1'905. 'lhesecars have carrying wheels 2 which are designed to travel on suitable track rails 3, and each car is preferably provided with bails 4 which are detachably secured to the upwardly extended ends of thecar sills. The cars are usually relatively short so that the ties or timbers project beyond the ends thereof.
5 designates an inclined way above and to one side of track rails 3, such way leading to a platform 6 of an adzing and boring machine, conventionally indicated at 7, Fig. 1. This machine and its platform are higher` than the track rails, and my invention is intended to effect the raising and discharge of the timbers from the carsto this receiving platform. lFor this purpose I employ a Specication of Letters Patent. I Application led November A10, 1811. Serial No. 659,639.
Patented June 4, 19412..
cradle which is movable at right an lesfto the track rails and which is so locate with.
reference to the inclined way that as 'it is moved upwardly it will remove the load from the car and dump it on-to the way.' Thev cradle is shown asv -composed of allow them to intersect the track rails 3, the
latter are cut-out, and these cut-outs are normally lled by small rail sections l() carried pg the cradle arms. The latter, and hence cut-outs, are such distances apart that-4 when a car is on the track between the cutouts .the ties or timbers on the car will in-ter-y sect the'planes of t-he'cradle arms sothat as the latter are raised the will engage and lift the timbers and as t ey swing on their pivots they will gradually assume the inclined position shown in Fig. 1 and thereby discharge the timbers onv the inclined way.
Toprevent the cars from being displaced-in Y the lifting of the timber therefrom hooked-4 lugs 12 carried by the cars are designedto engage guard rails 13 adjacent to track rails 3 between the cut-.outs thereof, such lugs and'` guard rails being substantiall the same as shown and described in the .be ore noted patent.
It is understood, of course, that in handling .timber the bails 4 are removed lfor un-` loading.
Any suitable means may be employed raising the cradle; that shown comprises hoist-ing cables 14 passed over suitable pulleys supported by' a super-structure 15. After the load is discharged the cradle is lowered by gravity. y. l I
-I claim as my invention n 1. A device for unloading a car on a track comprisin a cradle movable on a fixed plane transverse y of a fixed track in proximity to and beyond the ends of a car thereon for raising the loadV bodily from the car, and a platform upon which the load is discharged. 2. A device for unloading a car on a track comprisin a cradle movable on a fixed plane transverse y of a fixed track in proximity to and beyond the ends of a car thereon and designed to engage and raise the load from the car without disturbing the latter and discharge-the load at one side of the track.
3. A device for unloading a car on a track comprising a cradle pivotally mounted at arms 8 each of which is pivoted at l9- at points adjacent the upper ends 4of the in-- clined way. To accommodate these arms andl one side of a fixed track4 and movable on a fixed plane transversely ofthe latter and in. f proximity to the -ends- .of :a car thereon,.
means for raising. the cradle and turning it on its pivot, and a platform upon'which the cradle discharges the load raised thereby freni-thc car.
tents from the car, fand means for retaining `the ca r on the track while the cradle is liftj, v
. 4'; In combination with a Afixed track hav# l .ling cut-outs and a car cated betweensaid cut-outs, a cradle piv0tally 'mounted at one side of the'track and t fittlng in said cutouts,.said cradle in its upward travel being designed to 'raise the contentsvfrom the'car,' and afplatform upon" .which the cradle discharges.'
" .5. In combination with a'iiXed .track hav# ing cutouts, andl a car designed to be 10i catedfbetween-saidScut-outs, a cradle pivotally mounted at one'side of the track and fitting injsaid cut-outs, said cradle in its up. ward travel being designed to raise the con- 'ing the load therefrom. f
designed lto' be "1 0-i two spaced apart arms movable transversely of and designed to intersect the track rails, said armsbein '-sdeof the trac pivobed ends of said arms, and neans for specification in the O. 1W. FERGUSON.
6. In combination with railway track,
the pivoted ends'of sald arms, andmeans for pivoted at one end at one 'g v a platform adjacent to the' raising the; arms 'and turning them` on theirjA (timber projecting beyond the' e11ds `of acar s.
