LUBRICATING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IvER'r LARSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicage, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lubricating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to lubricating devices employing a rotary pumpcarrying member equipped with a measuring pump and a delivery pump, the lubricator being provided with a sight feed through which the oil is delivered from the measuring pump discharge ducts to the delivery pump suction ducts.
The object of the invention is to simplify the construction and improve the operation generally of a lubricator of this character, this object being accomplished by an improved arrangement of ducts and ports and by employing a hollow piston for the measuring pump, said piston having a valveequipped suction duct therein.
A. further object is to provide an improved disposition of the pumps and actuating cams therefor, together with improved means for adjusting the measuring pump cams.
A still further object is to provide means for flooding the sight-feed chamber when it is desired to temporarily deliver a large amount of lubricant to the bearings, as in starting the machine.

In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, A represents a casing or oil chamber adapted to be attached to any suitable support, as, for instance, a dash of an automobile; B, a stationary cylinder depending from the upper wall of the casing and provided with a series of measuring pump discharge ducts, and provided, also, with a series of delivery pump suction ducts and with a series of delivery pump discharge ducts alternating with said suction ducts; C, a rotary pump-carrying cylinder encom passing the cylinder B; D, a primary or measuring pump carried by the cylinder (l and provided with a discharge port which is adapted to be brought successively into registration with the measuring pump discharge ducts; E, a delivery pump carried by the cylinder C and having a port which is adapted to be brought successively into registration with the corresponding suction and discharge ducts; and F, mechanism for rotating the member C.
The casing may be of any suitable construction and configuration. As shown, it comprises a cylinder 1 provided with a removable top-plat-e, or disk, 2; and connected with one wall of the casing is a supply-pipe 3 through which oil is supplied from the reservoir 4. The casing is adapted to be connected to any suitable support, as to the dash of an automobile, by means of a bracket (not shown).
The top-plate is disconnectibly joined, by screws 5, to an external flange 6 with which the casing is provided at its upper portion.
The cylinder B is provided at its upper end with an outturned flange 7, and is equipped at its lower end with a removable flange, or cam-plate S which has a central hub screwed on the lower end of the cylinder B and, secured by a set-screw 9. The cylinder B is fixedly secured to the plate 2 from which it depends by means of a threaded central plug or bolt 10. Said member B is hollow and communicates at its lower end with the interior of the casing 1. Through the plug 10 extends a duct 11.
Surmounting the plate 2 is a sight-feed chamber G, composed of a cylindrical glass wall 12 and a metal cap-plate 13.
As indicated, the rotary cylinder C encompasses the stationary cylinder 13 and is confined between the flanges 7 and S of said stationary cylinder. The cylinders of the measuring and delivery pumps D and E are preferably formed integrally with the cylinder C, and the axes of the pumps are parallel with the axis of the cylinder C. The measuring pump is farther from the axis of rotation than is the delivery pump, however. The measuring pump has at its upper end a discharge port 14 which is adapted to be brought successively into registration with the lower orifices of measuring pump discharge duots 15 which are arranged in an annular series in the flange 7 of the stationary cylinder, as will be understood by reference to Figs. 5 and 6. The measuring pump discharge ducts 15 communicate at their upper ends with a series of bent tubes 15 which form continuations of the measuring pump discharge ducts. The bent tubes 15 are disposed in..the sight-feed chamber, and their attached ends are secured in openings through the top-plate 2. The measured oil is discharged from the tubes 15 into delivery pump suction ducts 16 which extend through the top-plate 2 and flange 7, as will be understood from Figs. 7 and 8. The suction ducts 16 are arranged in an annular series, and alternate with the delivery pump discharge ducts 17 which extend through the flange 7 and top-plate 2, as will be understood from Figs. 5 and 9. The upper ends of the ducts 17 communicate with tubes 17 a which extend through the sight-feed chamber and top-plate 13 thereof and connect, above the plate 13, with the tubes, or leads, 17 which lead to the bearings which are to be lubricated.
The delivery pump E is provided at its upper end with a port 18 which is adapted to be brought alternately into registration with the lower ends of the suction ducts 16 and the lower ends of the discharge ducts 17, so that the pump E will serve to draw the measured charges of oil from the ducts 16 and deliver the same through the ducts 17 The measuring pump has a hollow or tubular piston D whose upper end is open and whose lower end is equipped with a stem 19 provided with a cam-wheel 20, the lower end of the cylinder C being reduced, as indicated at 21, thereby aiiording space for the camwheels. The cam-wheel 20 is mounted on a pivot 22 which has a stem 23 which engages a groove or guide 24 with which the reduced end of the cylinder C is provided. Within the piston D is confined a coil spring 25 whose upper end bears against the upper wall of the bore of the pump and whose lower end bears against the lower wall of the bore in the piston. The bore in the piston communicates with a suction duct 26 which extends through the stem 19 and is guarded by an inwardly or upwardly opening ball-valve 27. hen the piston D descends, oil is admitted through the suction duct 26.
The pump E has a pistonv E whose lower end projects and is fitted with a cam-roller 28. The upper end of the plunger E is provided with a socket which receives a coil spring 2.9 whose upper end bears against the upper wall of the bore of the pump E. The cam-wheel 28 is mounted on a pivot, or axle, 30 which has a stem 31 engaging a guide 32 with which the rotary member C is provided.
The cam-plate 8 has a flat upper surface, and is equipped with a series of fixedly secured cams 33, (secured to the plate as shown in detail in Fig. 10) which serve to actuate the delivery pump, and is equipped also with a series of adjustable cams 34 which serve to actuate the measuring pump. Each series of cams is arranged in an annulus, as shown in Fig. 3. The cams 34 are equipped with shanks which extend through openings in the plate 8 and have their lower ends provided with circumferential grooves 35 which are engaged by the forked ends of members 36. The members 36 are mounted on the threaded lower end portions of adjusting rods 37 which extend freely through lugs 38 with which the plate 8 is provided. The upper ends of the rods 37 have threaded connections with the bushings 39 of packing glands with which the top-plate 2 is provided, the bushings 39 having threaded connections 40 with the plate. The rods 37 have right-hand threads, at their upper end portions and left-hand threads at their lower end portions, and the threads at their upper portions are the same in pitch as the threads of the bushings 39. It will be understood, therefore, that the bushings 39 may be adjusted without disturbing the ad justment of the cams 34. The upward ad justment of the cams 34 is limited by the members 36 striking the lower side of the plate 8, while the downward adjustment of the cams is limited by shoulders 41 which are adapted to engage shoulders 42 in the guides in which the cams are vertically adjustable.
The passage 11 through which oil may be admitted to the chamber G to flood the delivery pump suction ducts 16 is guarded by a needle-valve 43 which is received in a seat in the upper end of the member 10 and has a stem projecting through the cap-plate 13 and having threaded connection at 44 with the central portion of said plate 13. The actuating stem of the valve 42 is equipped with a knurled disk, or handle, 45.
The mechanism F, through the medium of which the cylinder C is rotated, comprises a worm 46 mounted on a shaft 47 and engaging a worm-wheel 48 which is preferably formed integrally with the cylinder C.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description.
Power is eonnnunicated through the shaft 47 from any suitable source to rotate the cylinder C. As said cylinder rotates, the pump pistons are caused to reciprocate vertically. When the piston I) descends, after riding over a cam 3st, oil is drawn into the piston through the port 26; and when the piston ascends, as it rides over the neXt cam, the oil is discharged through the port 14. and through one of the measuring pump discharge ducts 15, whence it passes through the corresponding bent tube l5 of the sightfeed and is delivered to a corresponding delivery pump suction-duct 16. The measured charge remains there until the delivery pump arrives at that point, and on the downward stroke of the delivery pump piston the charge is drawn through the port 18 into the delivery pump. hen the port 18 comes into registration with the corresponding delivery pump discharge duct 17, at which time the piston E rides over one of the cams 33, the measured charge is discharged through the corresponding delivery pump discharge duct 17 whence it passes through the tube 17 and lead 17 to the bearing which is to be lubricated.
It will be understood that each cam 3t can be independently adjusted, so that the measuring pump piston D will produce just the required displacement to supply the proper amount of oil to the particular hearing which is to be lubricated. The springs of the pump pistons are at all times under pressure, so that the upper end of the cylinder C is held firmly in contact with the lower surface of the flange 7 of the stationary cylinder. Moreover, when the pistons are operating to discharge oil, fluid pressure is exerted upwardly to seat the member C more firmly against the flange 7, thus insuring a close joint at the instant of discharge. hen desired, the valve may be withdrawn from its seat through the medium of the threaded stem and handle 45, thus allowing oil to pass from the reservoir 1 to the sight-feed chamber (1%. hen the delivery pump suction ducts 16 are sutliciently tlooded in this manner, the valve 4 may be closed; and after the surplus oil is used, the lubricator will continue to supply measured charges of oil to the bearings.
It is noteworthy that since the pumps deliver oil upwardly from their upper ends, the charges will always be accurately measured, since no opportunity will be afforded for air to collect at the upper ends of the pistons. bus, the construction obviates a ditliculty which has been experienced in constructions where the ports are not thus arranged, where the collection of air has sometimes operated to vary the discharge.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no undue limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible in view of the prior art.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of an oil chamber, a sightfeed chamber, measuring pump discharge ducts leading into said sight-feed chamber, ducts leading fronrsaid sight-feed chamber and adapted to convey the measured charges therefrom, means for forcing measured charges of oil through said first-named ducts to said second-named ducts, a duct leading to said sight-feed chamber through which it may be flooded, and a valve controlling said last named duct.
2. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a casing. a sightfeed chamber, measuring pump discharge duets leading into said chamber, ducts leading from said chamber and adapted to convey the measured charges therefrom, means for forcing measured charges of oil through said first-named ducts to said second-named ducts, a duct leading to said sight-feed chamber through which it may be flooded, and a valve controlling said last-named duct and having an external operating stem.
In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a casing, a sight-feed chamber, in asuring pump discharge ducts leading into said chamber, ducts leading from said chamber and adapted to convey the measured charges therefrom, means for forcing measured charges of oil through said first-named ducts to said second-named ducts, a duct leading to said sight-feed chamber through which it may be flooded, and a valve controlling said last-named duct and having an evternal operating stem. through the sight-feed chamber.
4-. In a device of the character set forth. the combination of a casing, a sight-feed chamber, a stationary cylinder equipped with discharge ducts leading to the sightfeed chan'iber, ducts leading from the sightfeed chamber through which the measured charges may pass from the sight-feed chamher, a rotary member mounted on said stationary cylinder and equipped with a pump provided with a port adapted to register successively with said discharge ducts, means for actuating the pump as it is carried by said rotary member, a duct leading to the sight-feedchamber through which said chamber may be flooded, and a manually operated valve controlling said lastnamed duct.
In a device of the character set forth, the combination of an oil chamber. a stationary cylinder therein, a sight-feed device surmounting said oil chamber, meastiring-pump discharge ducts in said stationary cylinder leading to the sight-feed chamber, delivery-pump suction and discharge ducts in said stationary cylinder, said suction ducts adapted to receive charges from the measuring pump discharge ducts, a rotary cylinder encompassing said stationary cylinder and equipped with a measuring pump having a port adapted to register successively with the measuring-pump discharge ducts and equipped also with a delivery pump having a. port adapted to register alternately with the delivery-pump suction and discharge ducts, a duct through which oil may pass directly to the sight-feed chamber, and a manually operated valve controlling said last-named duct.
6. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a pair of members adapted to rotate with relation to each other, one of said members having measuring-pump discharge ducts and having also del1verypump suction ducts and discharge ducts,
T the other member equipped with a measuring pump having a discharge port adapted to register with said measuring-pump discharge ducts and having a suction duct in its piston, and said other member equipped also with a delivery pump adapted to draw and discharge the measured lubricant through the delivery-pump suction and discharge ducts, and a sight-feed device through. which the oil is delivered from the measuring-pump discharge ducts to the delivery-pump suction ducts.
7. In a device of the character set forth, the combination with a pair of members adapted to rotate with relation to each other, one of said members having measuring-pump discharge ducts and having also delivery-pump suction ducts and discharge ducts, and the other member equipped with a measuring pump having a discharge port adapted to register successively with said measuring-pump discharge ducts and having also a hollow piston provided with a valve-equipped suction duct, and said other member equipped also with a delivery pump adapted to draw and discharge the measured lubricant through the delivery-pump suction and discharge ducts, and a sightfeed device through which the oil is delivered from the measuring-pump discharge ducts to the delivery-pump suction ducts.
8. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a stationary cylinder provided with measuring-pump discharge ducts and provided also with delivery-pump suction ducts and discharge ducts, a rotary cylinder equipped with a measuring pump having a discharge port adapted to register successively wit-h the measuring-pump discharge ducts and having a piston provided with a passage therethrough and with a valved suction duct, said rotary cylinder equipped also with a delivery pump having a port adapted to register with the deliverypump suction and discharge ducts, and means for actuating the pumps as they are carried by the rotary cylinder.
9. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a stationary cylinder provided with measuring-pump discharge ducts and provided also with delivery-pump suction and discharge ducts, a sight-feed chamber through which the measuringpump discharge ducts are adapted to cleliver oil to the delivery-pump suction ducts, a rotary cylinder equipped with a measuring pump having a hollow piston and a re tracting spring therein, said hollow piston having avalved suction duct, said rotary member equipped also with a delivery pump having a port adapted to register alternately with said delivery-pump suction duct-s and discharge ducts, said delivery pump having a spring-retracted piston, a series of adjustable cams serving to actuate the measuring-pump piston, and a series of cams adapted to actuate the delivery-pump piston.
10. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a casing, a surmounting sight-feed chamber, a stationary cylinder in said casing provided with measuring-pump discharge ducts and provided also with delivery-pump suction and discharge ducts, said measuring-pump discharge ducts adapted to deliver oil through the sightfeed chamber to the delivery-pump suction ducts, a rotary cylinder equipped with a measuring pump and a delivery pump, said measuring pump having a port in its upper end adapted to register successively with the measuring-pump discharge ducts, and said delivery pump having a port in its upper end adapted to register alternately with the delivery-pump suction and discharge ducts, an annularly arranged series of adjustable cams beneath the rotary cylinder and adapted to actuate the measuring pump, and an annular series of cams be neath said cylinder adapted to actuate the delivery pump.
11. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a casing, a surmounting sight-feed chamber, a stationary cylinder in said casing provided at its upper and lower ends with flanges, the lower flange serving as a cam-plate and the upper flange having a series of measuring-pump discharge ducts and having also a series of delivery-pump suction and discharge ducts, a rotary cylinder encompassing said stationary cylinder and confined between said flange-s, said rotary cylinder equipped with a measuring pump and having a port adapted to register successively with the measuring-pump discharge ducts and equipped also wit-h a delivery pump having a port adapted to register alternately With the delivery-pump 5110- said last-named cams extending through the tion ancll3 discharge duets, a series of cams top of the casing.
