UNITED STATES PATENT onnron.
ELIAS I. HALLOCK, 0F BABYLON, NEW YORK.
SKIMMER.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAS I. HALLOCK, citizen of the United States, residing at Babylon, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skimmers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to skimmers and more particularly to a device for removing grease and other fatty substance from the surface of soup.
The object of the invention is toprovide a suction skimmer of simple and durable construction by means of which the stratum of grease or other fatty matter, which usually collects on the surface of soup, may be readily removed therefrom, either when the soup is in a cooking vessel or served in a dish, without disturbing the body or stock of the soup.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility,-durability and efficiency.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a skimmer constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of the same; Fig. 3 is a top plan View; Fig. 4 is a front elevation.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
The improved skimmer forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a receiver 5, preferably cylindrical in shape and formed of glass or other material, said receiver being open at the top and having its side walls provided with laterally extending ears 6. Detachably secured to the receiver 5, is a cover 7 having a conical top and provided with a laterally extending flange 8 fitting over the upper edge of the receiver 5 and terminating in a depending circumferential flange9 adapted to embrace the exterior wall of the receiver,

as shown, there being a gasket 10 interposed between the flange 8 and upper edge of the receiver in order to prevent leakage between the parts. I
Extending laterally from the cover 7, is a pipe or conductor 11, the inner end of vwhich communicates with the interior of the receiver 5, while the outer end thereof is bent downwardly and adapted to be immersed in the grease or other fatty matter on the surface of soup.
Mounted on the cover 7 is a suction pump including a cylinder 12 having its upper end provided with a perforated cap 13 and its lower end formed with a dome-shaped terminal 14. Mounted for reciprocation within the cylinder 12, is a piston 15 having a rod 16 secured thereto and provided with a terminal finger piece 17 extending through the perforated-cap 13, as shown, so as to permit the pump to be readily operated.
A coil spring 18 is seated within the cylinder 12, one end of said coil spring resting against a shoulder 19 formed on the dome 14, and the other end thereof being secured to the piston 15, so that after the piston 15 has been moved in the directionof the dome 14, the spring 18 will serve to automatically return said piston.
Depending from the dome-shaped portion 14, is a tube 20, one end of which communicates with the interior of the receiver 5, while the other end thereof communicates with the interior of the cylinder 12 and is provided with a curved lip 21 overhanging the upper end of said tube, as shown. Arranged within the tube 20, is a ball valve 22 which serves to prevent air from entering the receiver 5 on the forward stroke of the piston, and is movable to open position to permit the air to be partially exhausted from the receiver on the return stroke of said piston. The piston is so arranged that on the forward stroke thereof, the valve 22 will be moved to closed position and the air in the dome 14 compressed and forced around the packing of the piston to the front end thereof, and on the return stroke of said piston, the valve 22 will be moved to open position, thus creating a partial vacuum within the receiver 5 and causing the grease or other fatty matter to be conducted through the pipe 11 into said receiver.
Extending laterally from the cover 7, is a handle supporting bracket 23, preferably formed in two sections, one of which is secured to the flange 8 of the cover, while the other is inclined to conform to the cylinder 12 and is rigidly secured to said cover at the apex thereof. A handle 24 is interposed between the sections of the bracket 23 so that the device may be conveniently moved from place to place.
As a means for clamping the cover in position on the receiver 5, there is provided a bail 25, the ends of which are pivotally mounted on the ears 6, there being hookshaped clamping members 26 connected with the bail 25 so that when said bail is swung downwardly into engagement with the receiver 5, the clamping members 26 will engage the flange 8 of the cover and compress the gasket 10, thus to form an air tight joint between the parts.
Thus it will be seen that by inserting the lower or curved end of the pipe 11 in the grease or other fatty matter on the surface of the body of soup and operating the piston 15, the grease from said soup will be readily transferred to the receiver 5 without in any manner disturbing the body or stock of the soup. It will here be noted that the upper member of the bracket 23 not only forms a support for the handle 24:, but by engagement with the cylinder 12 and cover 7 serves to assist in preventing accidental displacement of the former.
While the device is principally designed for removing grease and other fatty matter from the surface of soup, it will of course be understood that the skimmer may be used for removing cream from milk or wherever a device of this character is found desirable or applicable. It will also be understood that the skimmers may be made in different sizes and shapes and that a flap valve may be employed in lieu of the ball valve, without departing from the spiritof the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:'
A device for the purpose described, in
cluding a receiver, a cone shaped cover mounted on said receiver, a cylinder secured in inclined position to the cover with the outer end of the cylinder projecting beyond the apex of the cover, a valved communication between the interiors of the cylinder and cover, a piston operating in said cylinder, handle brackets connected to said cover, one of said brackets being also connected to the upper end of the cylinder and serving to reinforce the connection of said cylinder with the cover, and a handle carried by said brackets. V
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses. v
