ATTACHMENT FOR GRINDSTONES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1912.
Application filed June 14, 1911. -Serial No. 633,191.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED WV. EoeERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at "Wausau, in the county of Marathon and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Grindstones, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a tool holding attachment for grindstones for adjustably positioning a tool or knife edge so that the grindstone in its operation will form a cutting edge thereon.
The invention embodies among other features, a device which is so arranged that the weight of the tool and holder will gravitationally retain the edge to be sharpened in engagement with the grindstone, the tool being adjustably mount-ed in the holder and removable therefrom for the purpose of in-. sorting a new tool, the mentioned holder being adjustable relatively to the grindstone.
In the further disclosure of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device in applied position. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the holder, the tool having been removed therefrom.
Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose the usual grindstone a and mounted adjacent thereto is a box-shaped base I), said base being slidable upon a floor or other supporting surface to move the same nearer to or farther from the grindstone a.
Pairs of standards a are mounted upon the base I) and the standards in each pair of standards are inclined so that the upper ends thereof will meet,'the said upper ends being provided with registering apertures through which the ends of a shaft cl are revolubly received. Mounted to slide on the shaft (Z are collars 6 provided with apertures in which are threadedly mounted suitable screws 6, the inner ends of the said screws being adapted to engage the shaft d to rigidly secure the collars e to the shaft and mounted to slide upon the shaft d between the collars e, is a holder f, an end of the said holder projecting forward toward the grindstone a when the device is in applied position as shown. A clamping plate 9 is mounted upon the holder f, said clamping plate 9 being movable into clamping position by operating suitable thumb nuts in to clamp a tool 2' onto the holder f, the mentioned thumb nuts it being threadedly mounted upon bolts j extending transversely through'the under side holder f from the under side thereof, the said bolts being also arranged to extend transversely through the clamping plate 9 so that the clamping plate will be prevented from sliding off the holder f when the tool is removed from the holder, the said tool when mounted in position on the holder being arranged between the holder f and clamping plate 9 after which the thumb nuts h are operated upon the bolts j to rigidly secure the tool to the holder as will be readily understood, with an end of the said tool adapted to lie against the periphery of the grindstone a.
The standards in the pairs of standards 0 are provided with transverse apertures 7; and mounted to pass through one of the apertures k in each of the standards are screws Z arranged to extend into the sides of the base I) to retain the standards in supporting position. It will be readily seen that by removing the screws Z from the base I) and standards the standards can be lowered or raised so that one of the other apertures in each of the standards will register with openings made by the screws in the base Z2, after which the screws can be replaced to pass through the new apertures in the standards and the openings formerly made by the screws in the base, thus providing an adjustment of the standards relatively to the base.
By referring to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the tool 2' will be gravitationally held in sharpening engagement with the grindstone a and when a cutting edge has been provided on the tool by the grindstone, the holder can be swung upwardly and rearwardly, after which by operating the thumb screws h, the clamping plate can be loosened to permit'of removing the tool 6. The base 6 can be moved nearer to or away from the grindstone a to vary the cutting angle and the cutting angle can also be determined by adjusting the standards relatively to the base as mentioned heretofore. The lateral movement of the tool holder f upon the shaft cl is limited by the collars c, said collars being adjustable through the medium of the screws 6 so that the sliding distance of the holder f on the shaft 41 can be increased or decreased.
I claim:-
1. In combination with a base, standards adjustably mounted thereon, a shaft journaled on the said standards, a tool holder mounted to slide and to swing on the said shaft, bolts extending upwardly from the said tool holder, a clamping plate mounted on the said tool holder and having the said bolts passed therethrough, thumb nuts mounted on the said bolts and adapted to engage the said clamping plate to clamp a tool in the said holder and collars adjustably mounted on the said shaft for limiting the sliding movement of the said holder on the said shaft.

2. In combination with a base, pairs of standards adjustably mounted on the said base, the standards in each pair being inclined so that the upper ends thereof will meet,'the mentioned upper ends being provided with registering apertures, a shaft journaled in the registering apertures of the said standards, a tool holder mounted to slide and to swing on the said shaft, means for clamping a tool to the said tool holder and means adjustably mounted on the said shaft for limiting the sliding movement of the tool holder.
