To allwho'mz't may concern Beit known that I, PHILLIP JACOB DRE- HER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in thecounty of Lucasand Stateof Ohio, have invented a certain new and `useful Type-Writing Machine; and Idohereby declare the` following' to be a full, clear, andv exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figuresv of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

An arm 11 is fixed to and projects rearward from the carriage beam 6 andhas a tooth 12 projecting rearward rom its rear end for limited longitudinal reciprocatory movements relative thereto, vasibestshown in Fig. 4. The tooth is shown, in the present instance, as having its inner vend fitting 'wit-hin a socket 13 in the rear end of the arm 11,` being held for limited longitudinal movements within such socket by a pin 14" .projectinr through op osing walls ofl said socket and a transverse y elongated o'pening 15 in said tooth. The tooth 12 when projected is adapted to have its rear end engage within the groove of a worm 16 which'is located immediately to the rear of said tooth transversely of the typewriter with its ends journaled in the plates 5', or supported in any other suitable manner. The worm 16 is continuously driven by a belt 17 running from a motor 18 t'o apulley 19 on the wo-rm shaft,
or it may be driven in any other 'suitable through which carrying pins or screws 24 freely work. One of the pins 24projects from an angled bracket 25 and the` other from an angled arm 26 of a bracket 27 said brackets being attached to the respective plates 5, as shown in Figs. 1 and` 3. T he tooth shifting bar 20 is normally held at-the limit of its right hand stroke by the action thereon of a coiled compression spring 28 which is carried by a stud projecting from theA associated end, of said bar and has its outer end-thrust against the associated plate .5. `The inclination of the slots 23 relative to the bar is such'that a movement of the bar 20 to the left from retracted or normal position will impart alateral movement vthereto in the direction. of the worm 16 to move the 'tooth 12 into meshing engagement Vwith the worm as is apparent by reference to Fig. 1, the movement of the toothv with the bar being actuated by the coaction of the tooth lug 22 with the walls of the barslot 21. To' yieldinglyprevent' play of the tooth-lug v22 Within the bar-slot 21 and at the Sametime permit saidv parts to have a loose sliding fit, a coiled compression spring y29 encircles a portion of the tooth4 12 and has its opposite ends thrust against the arm 11 and lugs on the tooth to normally hold the -lug 22 in contact with the rear or Iouter wall of the bar-slot.
The movements of the bar 20 against the tension of the spring 28 are actuated by suitable pneumatic means, which is shown as comprising apneumatically operated bellows 30 `and a lever 31, which latter is fulcrumed to an arm 32 projecting from the associated side of the case 1, and has its upper end pivotally attached to the right hand end of-the bar 20, as at 33, and its lower'end attached to the movable part o the bellows 30. The arrangement and man! ner of connection of the bellows 30, lever 31, and bar 33 are such that upon a collapsing movement of the movable bellows part to which, the lever is attached, -the upper end of t-he lever will be thrown'to the .-left to eilect a consequent movement of the bar 20 in the same direction. The bellows 30 has a tube 34 projecting therefrom to an air passage in an associated tracker-board 35, in engagement with which a perforated control sheet 36-passesl to control' the 'admission of air to the bellows through said tube,

The sheet 36 is shown as having its coursel directed by guide-rolls ,37, and as being driven by a drive-roll 38 in coaction with an idler-roll 39. When the carriage 6 7 has substantially reached the limit of-.its retracting movement the bumper 45 attached thereto coacts with and moves 'thevlever `43 to eil'ect a lowering of the catch 41 from engagement with the notch V4O in the bar 20 to permit a return ofthel bar 20 to full retracted position under the influence of its spring 28, thus effecting a disengagement of the tooth r12 and worm to permit a stopping of the carriage in line starting posit1on. Upon a bar shifting movement of the lever v31 the finger 57 thereon acts on the spacer bar 46 to move the same against thetension of its spring 49 to impart oscillation to the levers 50-50 to raise thebar 52 andcoacting spacing lever 53 to cause t-he pawl 55 to act on the ,ratchet 56 to eHect a partial rotation of thev platenroll 4. Should a perforation in the sheet 36 move into register with the tracker-board passage to the -tube 61 and bellows 60 the lever 58 will be oscillated by a collapsing of the bellows 60 and eect a consequent movement of the bar 46 to move the line spacing levers as above described without'eecting a retraction of the f carriage and platen.

It is obvious from the above that I have provided a simple and elicient pneumatically operated mechanism for eiiecting a retracting movement of the typewriter platen to line start-ing position and a line spacing I wish it understood that my invention, is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are speciiied in the claims.
