This invention relates to means For protecting resistance conductors which are used in electric heaters and the like and has for its object the provision of a covering or protective. layer which will prevent the injurious action of certain resistance conductors. whenheated. upon the insulating material which is in contact therewith.

This oxid has been tound in some cases to attack the mica or other insulating material which is placed in contact with it when the conductor attains a hightemperature. This is particularly true ot certain resistance coinluctors containing iron. as tor instance. an alloy of iron. nickel. and chromium. resistance conductor o'l this composition. when heated. Forms an oxid or scale which has heen found to comhin with mica to term a very low melting point mixture. l have tound that he applying a coating ot a mixture which is hasic in character this action hetweeu the oxid and the mica can he prevented.
In carrying out my invention. l apply pret'eral'ily to the surl'ace ot the mica, although ot course the coatingma he applied to the resistance conductor. a coating composed of a basic oxid with an aluiuiuate and a hinder. This hinder may he ol such 1 nature as to make a glutinous mixture like paint, so that the material may he laid on with a hrush. The particular composition which I have l'ound to he very satisfactory is a mixture of of an oxid of aluminum, magnesium. zinc. or chromium andv 50% sodium aluminate. This is mixed with enough dextrin and water to Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed Marchfit), 1909. Serial No. 484,772.

make a thick cement or paste. The components of this compound, being hasicin character, will not slag with the oxid on the conductor. The sodium aluminate reduces the melting point somewhat. which is still very high. and ,the dextriu furnishes a small amount ot'icarhon when heated and preventsv the initial oxidation of the conductor.
ltv is evident of course. that other materials may he used and the proportions varied. it" desired. since I have merely se torlh a particular and specific compound in accordance with the patent statutes for purposes ol' illustration. and various modifications thereof will suggest themselves, to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit ol my invention, theyscope ot' which is set torth in the annexed claims.
