To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Monroe Gun'rr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Electric\ Switches, of which-t e following is a specification.
The invention relates particularly to switches of the push-button type, and the object of ,the invention is to produce a switch of the character described having features of novelty and advantage. A strai ht line of the push buttons is provide and also there is provided a mechanism whereby the poles, though. they have an oscillatory movement between two extreme positions, can be moved and stopped at intermediate positions in order that the switch can be used to control separate circuits. 1
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of the switch mechanism the poles being removed. Fig. 2 is a side view in reverse of Fig. 1. Fig.3 illustrates in side and end view the pole operating mechanism. Fig.4 is a view of one of the poles plates. Fig. 5 shows in edge and side view the pinion andpawl releasing device. Fig. 6 shows in side and end view the switch frame.

If the right hand push button in Fig. 1 be pressed ,down it will be seen that the knock-ofi' lug 20 will be moved to the left until it comes in contact with the pawl 16,- which will be moved out to disengage it from the stop 16 which it engages, an upon this disengagement the spring which has been tense during this movement of the pinion, will throw the switch plates to the positions shown in Fig. 2, the switch plate in Fig. 1 being illustrated in dotted lines. If now the right-hand push button be pressed down the knock-ofi' lug 20 will engage the pawl 16, disengage it from its sto 16, and the spring will throw the switc plates until the pawl 16 comes into enga e- .ment with the stop 16". This represents t e intermediate position of the switch plates. Further pressure onthe right-hand push button will cause the knock-off lug 20 to disengage the pawl 16 from the stop 16 when the spring will throw the switch plates still farther around until the pawl comes into engagement with the stop 16. Of course the stops 16 and 17 are not necessary as the spring arm 6 coming against the ends of the slot 0 in the frame plate will form a suitable stop for one of the extreme positions of the switch plates.
It is of course apparent that the rack and pinion mechanism can be utilized with the ordinary forms of push button switches.
I claim f 1. In an electric switch of. the push button type, a frame plate having a plurality of stops, a pole plate mounted on the spindle and connected to move with said poles,
swinging pawls pivoted'on the pole plate of oppositely disposed stops, a spindle supported in the frame plate, the polesmounted on said spindle, a pole plate connected to move with said poles, pawls pivotally supported on said pole-plate, one adapted for cooperation with one set of said stops, and one with the other set,
