vided with some features of Patents 982416 and 982417 as will be understood from the description below. The column actuators are provided with lifting springs 33 as in the usual construction.
The accumulator provided in each order of the machine rotates in one direction only as will be understood from what is above written, and is locked normally against movement in this direction by the detent 37 hereinafter described except when that detent is withdrawn by reason of a full stroke given One of the keys in the order to which the accumulator belongs. The accumulator embodies a lantern portion the pins of Which are shown at 34 in Fig. 2, and these pins engage the back ,stop 35 for -preventing back- Ward rotation, and they also engage the carrying detent 36 whereby the accumulator is rotated at proper times in Carrying, Figs. 2 and 20. The lantern pins further engage said detent 37 whose normal position is a' looking One between the pins but s withdrawn from that position at the conclusion of each full downward stroke received from any of the keys. The detent 37 is pivoted at 38 upon the bell Crank Carrying member 37, a spring 39 at its foot tending to keep it away from the accumulator, and a pin 39 projectlng from the member 37 into the .opening 39 limits its movements, but it is Controlled as to position by a catch 40 which is one of the novel features O' the mech .foot exte nding toward the detent 37 and the detent 37 is provided with a lip or tongue 44 projecting toward the Catch. It will be noted from the above that when the mechanism is standing still, the numeral Wheels are always looked, and thus safeguarded against accidental movement due to jarring, shock, or change of position.
In case the stroke of the key is only a partial one, the stop' lever actuated thereby will not move so far if at all. as in full strokes, and consequently will not cause the Catch to move far enough to release the detent from the accumulator, but on the eontrary the detent will remain in its looking position in the accumulator so that the latter cannot turn. And as the Other orders in the machine are all locked at the same time by the partial Operating of the key mentioned as we shall presently see, the operator must now correct the error before proceeding with his computation. The mechanism for thus looking the other orders will be described in a later part of this Specification.
My invention contemplates the ett'ecting of two separate and novel locks upon the column actuators. The first of these aets normally, and it's main purpose is the prevention of partial strokes of the keys through the aecidental contact by the operator s finger with keys adjacent upon the right or left of the Ones intended to be struck. Such accidental pressure upon the adjacent keys will not cause even partial strokes by them, because of the construction of the keys in parts, with a non-depressible outer portion, as hereinafter explained, and because such outer portion encounters the column actuator which is normally looked by the engagement of upstanding hooks 50, with which each actuator is provided, with lateral projections 51 on the Vertical lovers 52, which are novel in this mechanism and and in so doing -releases the look between' hook 50 and projection 51, the roll moving from it's rest i'n .front of lever .32 to the' lower straight face of that lever. The other lock upon the actuator 1s one which 'is set in operation whenever parti-al or meomplete strokes are given the keys and is hest .shown at'Figs. 1, 2, 2 and 20. In a multiple order keyboard Operating calculating machine, the combination With a numeral Wheel, the series of keys actuating the Wheel, and the mechanism for carrying motion from the keys to the Wheel, of means for looking the Wheel during down strokes of the keys such means being releas'able only at the'end of complete down strokes of the keys and remaining released during the ensuing upstrokes.
5. ln a calculating machine, the combina tion With the numeral Wheels, and keys for actuating said Wheels, of means for looking the Wheels, such means retaining their normally looking action on the Wheels in case of partial strokes upon the keys and until full strokes are given the same keys.
