GABRIEL CIOCIOLA, 0F LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS.
LEGGING.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GABRIEL CiooioLA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying'drawings.
This invention has for its object to provide a legging or gaiter of comparatively simple construction, and which is so made that it is capable of a suitable adjustment at the top and bottom portions thereof, so as to it the wearer at these points.
To this end the improved legging comprises a body portion of leather, canvas or other suitable material, shaped to lit the leg of the wearer, and having overlapping part-s, as is usual. At the top portion of the legging the said overlapping parts are provided with means for preventing endwise or vertical movements relative to each other, said means preferably comprising a slot in the outer overlapping part arranged parallel, or approximately so, with the top edge of the legging, or at a right angle to the vertical edges of the legging, and a swiveled device mounted in the inner or underlying part and adapted to pass through the said slot, when turned so as to be parallel thereto, and which may then be turned to a locking position transverse to said slot. This locking or holding device may or may not comprise a strap-guiding loop which has a shank attached to the underlying part and which loop may be turned to a position to be inserted through the slot in the outer part, and then be disposed transverse thereto so as to be in position to receive an upper strap which is fastened to the said outer part and which engages with a buckle attached to the other part. The shank of the holding or locking device or of the strap"- guiding loop will prevent endwise or vertical movements of the overlapping parts of the legging relative to each other. The lower part of the legging is held in place, when in use, by a strap which is fastened near the middle portion of the legging, and which is of suitable length to be wrapped diagonally around the legging and be engaged with the buckle located near the lower part of the latter. If desired, the improved legging may be provided with a gaiter portion to overlap the shoe of the wearer, and

with a bottom strap by which the legging may be fastened beneath the wearers foot.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of one form of the present invention, and Fig. 2 illustrates another and slightly different form thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section on line 3 3, of Fig.
1. Fig. 4L is a detail perspective view showing one form of swiveled strap-guiding loop and its attaching plate. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing a swiveled strap-guiding loop which may be mounted in place withoutI an attaching plate, and Fig. G is a detail view showing a swiveled or rotatable locking or holding button.
In the drawings 12 denotes the body portion of the improved legging, the outer overlapping edge portion of which is provided with a strap 13 to be passed through a guiding loop 141 and engaged with a buckle 15 attached to the underlying portion of the legging. The shank of the strap-guiding loop 14 passes through a horizf al slot- 16 formed in the upper part of tl1 id overlapping edge portion of the legging, the said slot extending approximately at a right angle to the vertical edge of said portion and permitting any suitable adjustment of the said overlapping portion relative to the underlying portion as will enable the strap to be so adjusted and buckled as to make the legging properly fit the leg of the wearer. Owing to the swiveled mounting of the strap-guiding loop 111 it may be turned so as to register with the saidt slot 16 when the edge of the said loop is to be passed through the said slot, and may then be turned toa vertical position or transverse to said slot so to as enable the strap 13 to pass readily through said loop lt to the buckle 15. The shank of the said strap-guiding loop 141, passing through the slot 16, prevents one portion of the legging from moving vertically or endwise relative to the other portion thereof, and thus properly holds the overlapping parts of the legging in place.
The holding or locking device shown in Fig. G consists of a head or button 23 having a shank which passes through the overlapping parts 12 and a slot 1.6 in one of s aid parts, the inner end of said shank being riveted over a washer Q4 located inside of the underlying or inner part of the legging and in which underlying part the shank of the button readily turns, so that said button may be disposed parallel to said slot, to pass through the same, and may then be turned to locking position transverse to said slot. The swiveled strap-guiding loop, when this form of holding or locking device is e'm- 17 attached to said underlying portion, as i shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4:, or the said swiveled strap-guiding loop may be passed through a horizontal slit 22 in the underlying portion of the legging, and thus have a swiveled mountin directly in said underlying portion wit out the assistance of the plate 17,
Yaswill be .understood from the detail view Fig. 5. When the strap-guiding loop 14 is employed'as a holding or locking device its shank serves a purpose similar to that served by theshank of the button 23, as a locking or holding device for preventing endwise movements of the overlapping parts of the legging on each other; while the head or loop r14, which performs a holding function similar to that performed by said head or button, is itself retained in holding position by the strap 13 which passes through it.
yThe' lower portion of the legging is seculed in place by means of a strap 1S which is preferably secured to the underlying part of the'legging vnear the middle thereof, vertically, and is wrapped about the legging and i with a buckle 19 attached to the leg near the lower portion thereof.
The improv e legging may be provided with a gaiter portion 20 and also with a bottom attaching strap 21 forsecuring the legging beneath the shoe of the wearer.
The improved `construction provides a legging which may be made at'comparatively little cost, and in which theparts thereof may be conveniently adjusted, and when properly adjusted will be reliably held in lace while rovidino' foraconvenient at- Cvopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commis Washington, D. C.
Vtachment to or removal of the legging from the person of the wearer.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A legging comprising a body portion having overlapping parts the outer of which is provided near its top with a slot extending approximately parallel to theupper edge thereof, and the underlying part of which has attached thereto a swveled device the shank of which extends through said slot and prevents up and down movements of the said overlapping parts of the legging relative to each other, and means, coperating 'with said swiveled device, whereby the top overlapping portions of the legging may be adjustably seeured together, so as to provide a legging of aV variable size when closed.
2. A legging comprising a body portion having overlapping parts the outer of which is provided nearits top with a slot extending approximately parallel to theupper edge thereof, and the underlying part of which has attached thereto aswiveled strap-guiding loop the shank of whichY passes through lsaid slot and prevents up and down movementsv of the said overlapping parts of the legging relative to each other, combined with a strap attached to the outer overlapping portion near the top thereof and passing through said loop, a buckle, onthe underlying portion, with which-the said strap may be engaged, and means, below the top portion of the legging for securing the lower overlapping portions of the legging together.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
