SIMON Il. KENNEDY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND F. Gr. MACOMBER, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT iN APPARATUS FOR OBTAINING TANNING EXI'RACTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 102,832, dated May l0, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. H. KENNEDY, of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented an Improved Apparatus for ExtractingTannin; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to procure the tannin contained in the various barks that grow upon the forest-trees of this country, and by means of a suitable apparatus to condense or concentrate the same, so as to render it capable of ready and easy transportation.
Heretofore manufacturers of leather have been compelled to freight the barks containing tannin from the forests in their heavy and bulky state to the taunery at great expense ot time and money.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment or use of a simple, cheap, and portable apparatus that can be readily taken into the forests where the bark grows and operated with but little skill for the purpose of condensing the tannin extracted therefrom, so that the tannin is reduced to the consistency of cream, or even to a semi-plastic state, in which condition it may be put into suitable receptacles, and in this manner be kept in store and sold as an article of manufacture to those re- VVhen in this condensed state, and its use is required, it may be reduced with water to any required strength.
The apparatus consists of an evaporatingconductor, to the under side of which is attached a steam-pipe, through which steam is caused to pass for the purpose of assisting the process of evaporation. Bymeans of this conductor the liquid is conveyed in a sinuous course to an evaporating pan or boiler, in which is a steam-chamber, and in which said boiler the liquid is condensed or evaporated to the desired consistency. In this pan or boiler is an agitator or paddle, for the purpose of keeping the liquid from settling tothe bottom.
' To enable others skilled in the art to make l and'use my invention, I will proceed to describe proved apparatus. Fig. II is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same, taken from the line .fr x. Letters of like name and kind indicate like parts in each of the gures.
A may represent the foundation or base on which my apparatus stands, and B the platform or support for the evaporating-conduotor, K
both of which may be made of any suitable form and materiahas they are not essential to -the operation of my invention.
ing process for a longer period. To the under side ot' this conductor is rigidly tixed a pipe or tube, I), through which steam iscaused to pass for the purpose of heating the conductor and assisting the evaporation. A fresh supply of steam ris admitted into the pipeD at intervals of about fifty feet, induction and eduction pipes a, a. being provided for admitting the` steam and allowing the saine to escape when partially condensed.
E is an evaporating pan or boiler with a double bottom, thus forming a steam-chamber, F, into which steam is admitted by the induction-pipe b, and allowed to escape by the eduction-pipe c when condensed. Within this boiler E is a paddle or agitator, G, attached to an upright shaft, H, which is driven by a pulley, I.
The operation is simple, effectual, and easily understood. After the liquid tannin has been extracted by the ordinary process of leaching, it is pouredinto the upperend of the conductor c, steam being at the same time admitted into the tube D. The liquid flows slowly along the conductor in a sinuous course to the pan or .boiler E, in which it is condensed to the desired consistency.
It will be observed that the liquid is partially condensed while passing along the conductor, before it passes into the boiler, in which the process is completed by means of the steam admitted into the chamber F, and that the agitator, being caused slowly to revolve, prevents the liquid from settling to the bottom. When the liquid has been sufficiently condensed it is drawn oft' by means of the pipe d, and may then be stored in suitable vessels or receptacles for use or transportation.
The advantages of my invention are obvious, as by it the stren gtll of the tannin is condensed into a. small bulk, so that it can be transported to any point where it muy be required t0" use it atbut littlecost of transportation, and when required for use it can be diluted with Water to the desired strength.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A condensing-tank or evaporator provided with a. steam-chamber, F, and agitator G, in combination with the auxiliary coil-pipe 0,2111 constructed and arranged as herein shown and described. y
S. H. KENNEDY.
