Description

J. HUBER- y Cue Cutting. No. 102,821. f Patented May' 10, 1870.
N A Il N. FETDS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D. C.
,in the county of St. Louis and State @tutti tatrt @tutti dtyiylw.
JOSEPH HUBER, OF IST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR IOHIMSELE AND SOLOMON BRUNSWICK, OF SAME PLACE.
LettersPatent No.1l02,821,dcted`. May 10, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patenti and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH HUBER, of St. Louis, of Missouri, have made certain new 'and useful Improvements in Cue-cutting Machines; .and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full and true description tlereof, reference -being had tothe accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked Kthereon.
' This invention has for its object to out off cue-ends -true to-the longitudinal axis ot' a billiard-cue, and
smoothly, without leaving serrated edges.
'lhc nature of this invention is in the arrangement of the cue-holder with a' head-piece which has the cutter-knife upon it, the head-piece being revolved by the cutter-handle. about the holder, whilst, at the same time, the cutter has an independent feed motion, causing it tok penetrate into the stuff of the cue.
To'enahle those herein skilled to make and use my said invention I will now more fully describe the same, referring to the accompanying-- Figure 1 as a side elevation; to
Figure 2 as a plan; and to Figure 3, as a vert-ical sectional elevation.
I construct the stock 'A of propel' form to receive in its bore a cue, B.
The inner surface of the stock should he rough-l cned with sand or em'ery-paper, to grip tightly on the cue and prevent it from rotating.
The stock is arranged to be firmly pressed about the cue bythe lclamping-ring C, the lower stock being conical and slotted to allow for the clamping movement, as seen-in iig. 1.
At the upper end of .the stock or holder -A is the cap-piece D.
The base d furnishes a rest against which sits the head or\toolpiece E.A This revolves freely about the vertical part (l1 of the cap D, and is held in place as well as regulated as to speed in movement by the set-screws e, which engage in the groove l2 of said cap D.
The head-piece E, at its upper end, is arranged to fit nicely about the cue so as to confine thesame.
Upon its top face the head-piece has the cutter F, pivoted at fand slotted at f1, so that a radial movement about the pivot f is possible, subject t'o the coutrol of the set-screw q in the slot f.
The cutting-edge f2 is thus enabled to move from circumference to the-middle of a cue.
The cutter has a handle, f3.
The operation of said parts is as follows:
The cue being properly inserted and clamped, the operator grasps the handle f, the stock being still held stationary, the head-piece and cutter are turned about the cue end, at the same time the hand-pressure causes the cuttingedge"1"l to penetrate the stuff ofthe cue, until the cutter has made the full stroke of its slot, when the cutting-edge will have reached the center of the cue and have made a smooth, truc cut.
As before observed, any irregularity of movement of the headfpiece E is remedied by adjustment of thev screws e.
,Having thus fully described my said invention, What I claim, and desire. to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The stock A, revolving head E, and cutter' l",v
substantially as and for the'pnrpose set forth.
2. The cutter F, arranged to turn the head-piece E, and at the same time move radially about the pivot f, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of said invention I have hereunto set my hand, in presence of JOSEPH HUBER.
Witnesses WILLIAM W. H nn'rnnn, SOL, BRUNSWICK.
