Be it known that I, HARRY LUCKENBACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mixers and Distributers for Liquid Bodies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that type of mixing apparatus designed for mixing heavy liquid bodies such as paint, and has particularly in view a machine of this character that is entirely portable and can be easily and readily operated and controlled by a single operator.
To this end the invention contemplates a portable motor-operated mixing machine comprising means for thoroughly and effectually keeping heavy liquid bodies such as paint in a thoroughly mixed and stirred condition ready for distribution to the point of application or use.
A further object in this connection is to provide a power mixer, including distributing means, that can be conveniently and readily moved from one position to the other while at the same time capable of being operated by compressed air for the purpose of mixing large quantities of heavy gravity materials to a perfect solution.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for operating the mixing or stirring elements through the medium of a self-contained motor, that is to say, a motor which is a part of the portable apparatus and in which the operating Huid for the motor is used repeatedly without replenishment, except at long intervals.
Another general object of the invention is to utilize the same source of primary power, and similar instrumentalities, for operating the mo-tor and also for operating the sprayer head that distributes the paint or other liquid.
With these and many other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood,
the same consists in the novel construction,
combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed. e
The essential features of the invention are necessarily susceptible to structural modification, but a preferred and practical embodiment thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which the ligure of the drawing is a sectional perspective view of a mixer and distributer for liquid bodies 'constructed in accordance with the present invention.
In carrying out the invention there is employed a large mixing tank l of any desired capacity and constructed of sheet metal or other material. This tank is designed to contain a large quantity of the liquid to be handled, such as paint, and to provide for effecting the automatic and perfect mixing of all grades of heavy liquid bodies within the tank, the latter has arranged therein a pair of spaced vertical stirrer shafts 2 journaled in suitable bearings 3 and 4 which are respectively provided at the bottom part of the tank and in a bearing bar 5 securely fitted within the open top portion of the tank as plainly shown in the drawings. Each of the stirrer shafts 9. has fitted thereon a plurality of stirring paddles 6 projecting from both sides of the shaft and arranged in spaced order thereon. These stirring paddles are preferably provided with circulating openings 7 therein which materially assist in the stirring and mixing operation, and it will be observed that the paddles 6 on one of the shafts 2 are arranged in parallel planes to those on the other shaft, so that the paddles of one shaft rotate in the spaces between the paddles on the other shaft, thus insuring the stirring and agitating of the liquid body throughout the entire area of the tank.
In addition to the series of stirring paddles 6each of the shafts 2 has fitted on its lower end portion within the bottom part of the tank twisted propeller blades 7 which have a screw or propeller action serving to keep the material constantly in motion upwardly. This propeller action of the blade 7a therefore prevents settling of any portions of the materials before being thoroughly and intimately incorporated in the solution.
An important and practical feature of the invention resides in the means employed for operating the stirrers by power. These means include a motor casing 8 supported on suitable wheels or rollers 9 and having arranged on top thereof the supporting members or braces 10 for the mixing tank l,

The motor casing 8 has arranged therein a horizontal rotary power wheel 11 which is preferably of the double-bucket impact water wheel type. This water wheel is carried by a vertical driving shaft 1Q which is stepped at its lower end as at 13 in a bearing at the bottom of the casing S, and the upper end of said shaft may be conveniently arranged in the bearing 14 at the v The upper portion of the said shaft 12 between the casing 8 and the tank 1 has mounted thereon a driving pinion- 15 that meshes with gear wheels 16 iitted to the lower ends of the stirrer shafts 2, thus providing means for transmitting motion from the rotary wheel 11' to the rotary stirrers within the mixing tank.

- as indicated in the drawings, and it is proposed to lift this water and discharge it into the buckets of the water wheel by means of an ejector-nozzle 17 supported horizontally within the motor casing at one side of the water wheel and comprising a discharging tube 18 and an air blast nozzle or pipe 19 therein. The discharging tube 18 is provided at one end with an inlet leg` 2O which dips into the water in the motor casing while the opposite end of the said tube is provided with a jet hole 21 through which the stream of water is jetted against the water wheel.
According to the present invention, it is preferable to have the air blast nipple 19 supplied with air under pressure from` a valved air supply pipe 22 which receives its supply of compressed air from a main feed pipe 23 which is in communication with an air compressor or other source of air supply under pressure. This main feed pipe 23 is also in communication with a 'supplemental air supply pipe 24e having a controlling valve 25 and in direct communication with an air blast nipple 2G lying inside ot the `discharging tube 27 ot a second ejector nozzle which has a hose connection 2S with the valved outlet Q9 for the paint or other' liquid at the bottom' ot the mixing tank 1.
A sprayer head 30 is mounted on the dis charging end of the tube 27 and preferably consists of a duck-bill shaped hollow body 31 having a spray slit 32 at one side and which body has preferably secured thereto a spreader plate 83, one edge of which plate is formed with a distributing comb 34- which serves to spread the paint and also avoid the paint being sprayed on objects other than the surface which is being treated.
Through the medium of the Valve in the pipe 22, the speed of the motor can be readily controlled, and also by means of the valve 25 the force and volume of the liquid being sprayed can also be controlled. It will also be understood that it is the snc-V tion action ot' the two ejector nozzles that provide respectively for lifting and discharging water against the water wheel, and for forcibly drawing out the paintv from the tank and spraying it onto the object being painted.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the hereindescribed mixer and distributer will be apparent to those skilled in the art without further description.
I claim:
1. In a machine of the class described, a mixing tank, rotary stirrers within the tank, a motor casing for containing a supply of water, a water wheel mounted within said casing, and an ejector nozzle operated by an air blast, said ejector nozzle beingarranged within the motor casing anddisposed at one side ot' the water wheel for jetting a stream of water against the same.
2. In a machine of the class described, a mixing tank, rotary stirrers mounted within the tank, a separate motor casing for containing a supply of water, a water wheel mounted horizontally within said casing and having gear connections with the stirrers, and a horizontally arranged ejector nozzle located within the motor casing-at one side ofthe water wheel and having a tube in communication with the water supply and an air blast nipple within the tube.
3. An apparatus of the class described comprising a portable motor including a water wheel, a mixing .tank carried with the motor and having movable stirrers geared with the water wheel, a distributer, an ejector operatively connecting the distributer with the outlet ot the tank, another ejector arranged to jet water against the water wheel, and an air-pressure supply pipe having separate connections respectively with the two ejectors.
