Description

inited States HENRY GABELMANN, OFFORT SCOTT, KANSAS.
Leners Patent No. 102,802, daad May 1o, i870.
` IMPROVEMENT 1N BENCH-PINS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters-'Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern'.-
Be it; known that I, HENRY GABELMANN, ot' Fort Scott, in the county of Bourbonvaud State of Kansas, have inventeda new and improved Bench-Pin;v
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof', which wilLenable- 'others skilled in the art-to make a'nd use the same, rei' ference being had to the accompanying drawing forniing part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bench-f use to support. the boa-rds at the side 0i' the bench forj jointing the.
pins for joiners and cabinet-makers edges, and consistsl of blocks of wood or Ametal with diagonal grooves in the sides or edges adapted for engaging in slots in the sides ,ofthe bench, so'as .to pro# ject obliqcly therefrom, and hold the rear end ot' the board in the diagonal slot by the corners of the -wajlls of the slots cramping against the lside of the board, one end of which is held in the vise; or,- both ends may be held by these pins.
The said pins are more especially' intended for wide boards which are too high to joint conveniently when supported on apin in the common way, at the lower edge. They may be made in two parts, for adjust meut on each 0ther,to increase or diminish lthe breadth of' the slot.
Figurelisa perspective View of a pin such Las I propose to use; Fi 'ure 2 is a perspective view of a piu made 'adjustable by varying the width of' the slot; and
Figure 3 is a cross-section in dotted lines of a joiners bench, showing the application of my improved pin, Vthe latter being shown in full- -1ines.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a block or bar of woodor metal with diagonal slots B in the edges, and
G represents a pin made in two parts, the one adjustable on theother, and arranged to be clamped at any point soas 4ite be immovable, in respectto each oth'er by a set-screw, D, and nut; both the'lparts are rebated to form the diagonal slot 'E between them;
These pins are designed to be placed in slots in the side of the bench, or to rest on a bar running along the bench, so 'as to projectv from the side thereof ob- 'liquel'y upward, and take4 the end of the boarduot Aconfined in the rise inthe diagonal slot, and tilt suiciently to cramp the side of the board firmly between thc corners ot' the walls ot' the slots, in a man-k ner to produce sufficient friet-ion to hold the hoard, the said fi'iction'being in proportion to the weight ot' the board; consequently the' greater the weight the more irmly theboards will be held.
The small slots will hold boards vof different thickn'esses, but it will be'convenicnt in some cases to makev themadjnstabie, as shown in lig. 2.
' The slot in the side of the bench should extendthe whole length ofthe bench, so that thepins may be used for boards of any length not extending beyond the rear end of the bench.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-1 ent- Witnesses C. E. LLOYD,
W.' A. SHANNON.
