To allcbhma z't may aoncem:
Be 1t known that I, IRA Bnowma citizen ofthe United States, residing at Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State ofConneo-ti cut, have invented an Im rovementin Elec-,
tric Writing-Machines,
ing is a specification..
This invention relates to actions and has for its object to provide asimple, durable ,and inegrpensive action, so constructed thatia sli ht depression of a key will place a thurst ar in the path of movement of a rotating impact member which the follow whose .blow upon theith'rust bancauses the Specification of Letters ratent.

(n'otishown) and passing from a type-bar link 12. The rear endof each operating bar 13 is pivoted to the framework as at 26. Each type-bar link is pivoted to the framework as at 27 and is provided with an arm 28 which is pivoted to the correspondin operating bar at approxlmately its mi -length as at 29. In
.15 thrust bar to actuate the corresponding type 4 bar, thusj'gic'atly increasing-the speed of the machine and making it easy to operate.
It willof coursebe obvious that the principle of the invention is applicable, with unimportant changes in'the details of constru'ction,-to the 'various. types of writing machines now upon the rket. -'In other i words, my invention ena es'me. to-build electric'machines from the parts of ordinary Y machines b the substitution of certain parts for others ut without remodeling the may I chine or adding greatlyto the cast'o con- .structio 4 .With these and' other objects in view I 30 have devised the simple and novel electric ordinary machines the member I have termed .an'operating bar extends to the forward end. of the machine and is called a, key bar. In' my present machine each key bar is pivoted to the framework as at 30, and the forward end of the corresponding o crating bar terminates contiguously to t e'" rear end of the key bar. The forward end of eachkeybar. terminates in a key post carrying a key, and at therear endof each key bar is an upwardly extending arm 31 which normally engages a sto pin 32 and which carries a pm 33 which is adapted to engage the thrust bar, indicated by 14:. The lower end of the thrust bar is pivotally connected to e p the forward -endqof the operating bar and" action of, which'the following description the thrust bar is held in engagement with ,in connection with the accompanying drawin 33 by means .of a spring 344 which returns ing a specification, reference characters both the thrust bar' and the key bar to their :bemg used to indicate :the several parts. I a normal position after each actuation. In 8.5 Figural is a sidefelevation of'my novel the presentinstance Ihave shown the thrust action; and Fig.2 is a'p'a'rtial plan view-oi bar as connected to the operating bar by a ,keybqfll'dmeans of a slot '35 which receiv 2 P111 36 f0 denotes framework which may be of rojecting from the operating bar, the obect being to provlde a plvotal connect on any ordinary or preferred construct on. -.In I '40 the present instanceI-haveshown-Underwithout'pos'ltlvely connect nfgsaid bars together. At the upper end 0 the thrust bar sfa-lug 3.7- which s adapted to be engaged by the ini 'pact member. v
. Theoperat'on is as follows: The effect of wood framework. 1]. denotes a type-Bar, 12 .abarlink' .13 an operating-bar, 14 a thrust ar. pivoted thereto, 1'5 a key bar, 16a keypost and 17- a' key. 7 a quick blow; by'the-finger of the operator I 18 denotes a shaftwhich carries an impact upon a key. is to depress the key to the limit member 19. -It of course lieunderstood jofits movement, which 1s determined by that the special details of construction are the" engagement of the-key bar with a stop unimportant so far as the'priuciple. of/th'e 'pin38. The key bar is, oscillated -on its 50 invention is concerned. In the presentim' stance I have shown the shaft as provided a at each end with a disk 20 anda rodserving as an impact member andextending- 1n disk to disk and rigidly secured thereto 55 parallel with the shatt. Rotary motion ata high speed may be imparted to the shaft pivot. and the thrusthar is swungforward v e [by the en agement of pm 33 therew1th;plaeing lug 3 on the thrust bar in the path of .movement of the impact member against the power of spring '34. The action" of the impact member when-it'engagles the In on the-"t bar-- is to sw ng t e thrus bar .downward and forward, as indicated by dotted lines, until the impact member passes out of engagement with thelug, when the thrust bar is returned to .its normal position by spring 34:. The downward movement of the thrust bar carries the operating bar downward, which in turn, by means of the type-bar link, swings the type-bar into the printing position, as indicated by dotted lines; The instant the blow of the type-bar is struck, said bar and the operating bar are laterally projecting pin for engaging the thrust bar to place the same in the path of the impact member, and meansfor moving the thrust bar out of the path of the impact member when disengaged from said pin.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a frame, of an operating bar pivoted thereto, a key bar. pivoted to said frame and provided with an end arm, an impact -1nember, a thrust bar pivoted to the operating bar, and means carried by saidarm for engaging the thrust bar to place the same in the-pathof movement of the impact member. i
3.- In a typewriting machine, the combination of an operating bar provlded'with .an end pin, a thrust bar having an end slot engaging said pin, an impact member, and a key member.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination of an operating bar, a thrust bar having a direct loose pivotal engagement there-.
with, an impact member, 'means for normally retaining the thrust bar out of the bar provided with means for-placing the thrust bar in the path of the impact path of movement 'of the im'pact member,
and a key bar provided with means for e'ngaging the thrust bar to place the same into the path of the impact member.-
5. In a mechanism of the character described, the'combination with an operating bar having a pin extending theretrom,-and I a thrust bar having a slot to receive said pin,
of a shaft' carrying an impact member, a key bar by which the thrust bar is swung .into 'the line of movement of theVi-mpac't- I member. and a spring-for returning the thrust bar to its normal position.
G. In a mechanism of-the character described, the combination with an operating bar and a thrust bar connected thereto, of a shaft. carrying an impact member, a key bar having an arm carryinga'pin engagingthe thrust bar to swing .it into the line of movement of the impact-member and a spring for returning'the thrustbar'to itsnormal position.
7. In amechanism of the-"character described, the combi-nationwith an operating bar and a thrust bar connectedthereto, of a shaft carrying an impact:member,' a key bar acting to swing/the thrust bar into the line of movement of a the impact member, a spring for returning the thrust bar'to its normal position and stops for limiting the movement of the key bar.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a frame,'of a type operating bar pivoted thereto, a thrust bar pivotally connectedto the operating bar, a rotary impact member, means for rotating said member,
a keyl ar pivoted to the frame and having an end arm, a pin carried by said arm for impact member, and a spring connection between the frame and the thrust'bar."
