JULIAN PETER RAOUX, OF RHODELIA, KENTUCKY.
CANDLE-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ULIAN PETER RAoUx, a citizen of France, and a resident of Rhodelia, in the county of Meade and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Candle-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved candle holder, arranged to securely hold a candle in place, to allow of burning the candle to the very end, to readily accommodate candles of diflerent diameters, and to permit of conveniently fastening the candle holder to a suitable support with a view to hold the candle in an upright position and thus insure proper burning of the same.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a base, a rest plate for the candle to rest on, pairs of jaws movable toward and from each other on top of the rest plate to engage a candle on opposite sides and clamp the same between the aws, and 1nanually-controlled actuating means engaging the said aws for moving the same simultaneously toward or from each other. Use is also made of clamping arms depending from the base and controlled by a right and left-hand screw for moving the clamping arms toward and from each other, with a view to clampingly engage a suitable support for fastening the base in position.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a side elevation of a candle holder; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same; Fig. A is a sectional plan view of the same on the line t4 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the same on the line 55 of Fig. 8.
The candle holder is mounted on a base A, provided at the front and rear with upwardly-extending lugs A supporting a rest plate B, preferably made of metal and adapted to support the candle C held centrally in place on the said rest plate by pairs of jaws D, D and D, D extending upwardly and movable toward each other so as to clampingly engage the candle C at four points of contact to securely hold the candle C in position. On moving the pairs of jaws D, D and D, D from each other, a candle Specification of Letters Patent.

of any desired diameter can be readily placed in position on the rest plate B, and on them moving the pairs of jaws toward each other the candle is clamped centrally in place on the rest plate B as above described.
In order to move the pairs of jaws D, D and D, D simultaneously toward or from each other, the following arrangement is made: The jaws D, D and D, D extend upwardly from blocks D D slotted in the upper portion for free passage over the restplate B, andapertured below the rest plate B for engagement with guide rods E fixed on'the lugs A of the base A. The middle lower portions of the blocks D D are provided with threaded apertures, in which screw the right and left-hand threads F, F 2 of a screw rod F journaled at its ends in the lugs A of the base A, and the forward end of the screw rod F is provided with a knob F adapted to be taken hold of by the user of the candle holder for turning the screw rod.v F to the right or left for moving the blocks D D and consequently the jaws D, D and D, D toward or from each other according to the direction in which the screw rod is turned at the time. It is understood that the jaws D, D and D, D are at all times equally spaced from the middle of the rest plate B so that the candle C is at all times centrally supported and securely held in position on the rest plate B.
The jaws D, D and D, D and their blocks D D are preferably made of metal so that a candle supported on the plate B and clamped between the jaws D, D and D, D can burn down to the end without danger of setting fire to the surrounding parts of the candle holder.
In order to fasten the candle holder in position on a suitable support, use is madeof a pair of clamping arms G, G extending below the base A and adapted to engage the side walls of a socket H, as shown in Fig. 1, or the opposite faces of a support H, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The clamping arms G, G are adapted to be moved toward and from each other and are spaced equi-distantly from the center of the base A, and the upper ends of the clamping arms G, G are provided with blocks G G mounted to slide on guide rods I held on depending lugs A on the base A. The middle portions of the blocks G G are provided with threaded apertures engaged by the right and lefthand screw threads J, J of a screw rod J (see Fig. 2) journaled in suitable bearings in the lugs A One outer end of the screw rod J is provided with a knob J under the control of the user of the candle holder, for turning the screw rod J to the right or to the left with a view to move the clamping arms G, G toward or from each other. Thus for clampingly engaging the clamping arms G, G with the inner faces of the socket H, the screw rod J is turned to move the clamping arms G, G outwardly after they are inserted in the socket, so that the clamping arms G, G finally move in firm contact with the inner faces of the socket H to clamp the candle holder in position in the socket. When it is desired to fasten the candle holder to the upper edge of'the support H, as shown in Fig. 2, then the candle holder is placed in position so that the clamping arms G, G straddle the support H, and then the screw rod J is turned to move the clamping arms G, G toward each other to clampingly engage the sides of the support H.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the clamping jaws D, D and D, D move toward and from the center of the candle holder the same as the clamping arms G, G, and consequently when the clamping arms G, G engage the socket H or the support R then the candle C, held in position on the rest plate B by the'clamping jaws D, D and D, D, is centrally above the socket H or the support H.
The top of the base A is preferably hollowed out at the sides so as to receive any drippings that may come down from the burning candle C supported by the candle holder.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A candle holder, comprising a base provided at two opposite sides with upwardly projecting lugs, a rest plate supported upon the lugs, blocks each having up wardly projecting jaws and provided with three openings, the central one being threaded, the said blocks being slotted above the openings to receive the rest plate, guide rods mounted in the lugs of the base and upon which the blocks slide, and a screw mounted in the base end having right and left hand screw threads engaging the threaded openings of the said blocks.
2. A candle holder, comprising a base, a
rest plate on the said base for the candle to rest on, pairs of jaws having guided and sliding movement on the said rest plate for clamping a candle between them centrally on the rest plate, the jaws having nut portions extending underneath the said rest plate, guide rods 011 the said base underneath the said rest plate and engaged by the said nut portions, a screw rod screwing in the said nut portions and journaled in the said base, and a knob on one outer end of the screw rod for turning the latter.
In a candle holder, a base plate provided with pairs of lugs, one pair projecting upwardly and the other pair downwardly, a pair of guide rods mounted in each pair of lugs, a pair of jaws mounted to slide on each pair of guide rods, the jaws of each pair of jaws being each provided with a central threaded opening, and a rod journaled in each pair of lugs and having right and left hand screw-threads engaging the screw threaded openings of a pair of the jaws.
4. In a candle holder, abase having depending lugs and provided 011 its upper side with means for holding a candle, rods mounted in the depending lugs of the base, clamping arms mounted to slide on the rods and provided with nut portions, and a screw rod mounted in the base and having right and left hand screw threads engaging the nut portions of the clamping arms.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JULIAN PETER RAOUX.
