To all whom 2'25 may concern Be it known that I, Mans ()LUF l IAnsnN, engine manufacturer, subject of the Kingdom of Denmark, residing at the city of Asnas, Denmark, have invented new and useful Improvements in Straw-Presses with Automatic Bundle-Measurers and Needle- Controllers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object an im proved straw-press provided with an automatic bundle-measurer and a needle-controller.
The straw-press consists of a tunnel, in which the straw is pressed together, and means for conveying the straw into the tunnel and for pressing it together in the same. Such means consists of an oscillatory packer mounted in front of the tunnel; the packer-face traveling along the bottom of the straw-press, which may be provided with inclined teeth or the like pointed in the direction of movement of the straw and cooperating with similar teeth in the bottom of the straw-press to arrange the straws parallel to each other transversely of the tunnel and to retain the straw when the packer is swung upward from the tunnel.
The automatic-bundle-measurer and needle-controller consists of a device arranged in the tunnel and rotated by the straw pressed into the tunnel. For instance, such device may be a toothed disk pivotally mounted beneath the tunnel so as to project into an opening in the bottom of the tunnel, which disk is provided with a shaft carrying a cam which for each full revolution or for each distinct part of a full revolution, causes the needle to reciprocate, so that the size of the straw-bundles is determined by the time of revolution of said disk or its equivalent. For instance, said cam, for each full revolution or for each distinct part of a full revolution, releases a stop which normally prevents the reciprocatory movement of the needle; the stop being so arranged that it is restored automatically to operative position when the needle has made one reciprocatory movement.
The drawings illustrate a construction form of the invention.
Figure 1 is a schematical view of the strawpress provided with an automatic bundle-measurer and a needlecontroller. Fig. 2 is a schematical longitudinal section of the straw-press itself. Fig. 3 is a vertical Specification of Letters Patent.

The straw supplied to the straw-press is led upon the bottom 8 of the straw-press (Figs. 2 and 3), which bottom is continued by the tunnel t. In front of the tunnel is provided a packer v, mounted upon a hori- Zontal shaft a and, by means of a link 10, connected to a crank pin 09 carried by the pinion 0 the packer by these means being oscillated along the bottom of the strawpress from the position shownin full lines (Fig. 2) to the position 12 shown in dotted lines, in which latter position the link '10 and the crank pin a". are in the positions w and w. During the downward movement the plane front face of the packer conveys the supplied straw to the tunnel 25 and packs it together in the same. The curved face of the packer may be provided with inclined teeth 1 pointed toward the tunnel and cooperating with similarly arranged teeth 2 in the bottom of the straw-press to arrange the straws parallel to each other transversely of the tunnel and to retain the straw when the packer is swung upward to its upper position.
Working in an opening in the bottom of the tunnel t is a toothed wheel 3 (Figs. 1 and 4) the teeth of which extend into the tunnel, so that the wheel is rotated by the straw pressed into the tunnel. To the shaft of said wheel is fixed a cam 4, which acts upon the stop bar 6 pressed against said cam by means of a spring 5. The hooked end of said stop bar engages a pawl 7 acted upon by a spring 8. The pawl 7 normally prevents a pivoted lever 10 from being pressed upward by a spring 9. The lever 10 is arranged in a slot made in the side of a sector 12 fixed on a shaft 11; the lower edge of said sector being in line with or a little above the lower edge of the lever 10, when this latter is locked by the pawl 7. The lower edge of the sector is provided with a notch 13. On the axle 11 is loosely mounted an arm 14 which by means of a crank connection is oscillated from the pinion 0. The arm 14 carries a pawl 15, which, by a spring 16, is pressed against the lower edges of the sector 12 and the lever 10, and the width of which pawl corresponds to the total width of said two elements so that the pawl cannot engage the notch 13 as long as the lever 10 is locked by the pawl 7. On the shaft 11 is further fixed a forked bar 17 which is connected to the needle 19 guided in guide pieces 18, 18.
The operation is as follows: Twice during each full revolution of the wheel 3, the cam 4 causes the stop bar 6 to be forced back against the action of the spring 5, so that the pawl 7 releases the lever 10, which latter is moved upward by the spring 9 so that the notch 13 is laid open. Consequently during the next movement in the direction of the arrow at Fig. 1) of the lever l l the pawl 15 engages the notch 13 and moves the sector 12 so that the shaft 11 is oscillated and the needle 19 is moved downward. When the arm 14: returns, a projection 20 on said lever 11 engages the rear edge of the notch 13 thereby turning back the sector 12 and the shaft 11, so that the needle is moved upward with the binding thread caught by the hooked end of said needle.
The guide pieces 18 are arranged in such a manner that they permit the needle to yield to the pressure of the straw pressed forward. Simultaneously with the return movement of the sector 12 the point 21 of its upper part bears against the lever 10 and forces the latter downward and into reengagement with the pawl 7; consequently the pawl 15 cannot again move the sector so as to oscillate the shaft 11 before the stop bar 6 has again released the lever 10 from the pawl 7. The size of the straw-bundles, which depends on the time of revolution of the wheel 3, is varied by varying the diameter of such wheel.
The constructions shown and described may of course be varied without departing fronrtheprinciple of the invention.
Having thus described my invention the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a straw-press the combination of a tunnel, in which the straw is pressed together, an oscillatory packer mounted in front of said tunnel, and adapted to carry the straw into and press it together in the tunnel, means which cause the packer during the working stroke to move from above down and forward, and inclined teeth pointing toward the tunnel and being arranged on the surface of said packer traveling along the bottom of the straw-press.
2. In a straw-press the combination of a tmmel, in which the straw is pressed together, an oscillatory packer mounted in front of said tunnel, and adapted to carry the straw into and press it together in the tunnel. means which cause the packer during the working stroke to move from above down and forward, inclined .teeth pointing toward the tunnel and being arranged on the surface of said packer traveling along the bottom of the straw-press, and inclined teeth also'pointing toward the tunnel and being arranged on the bottom of the strawpress in front of the tunnel.
3. In a straw-press the combination of a tunnel, provided with an oscillatory packer, a toothed wheel projecting through the bottom of the tunnel, a cam fixed to said toothed wheel, a stop acted on by said cam, a locking pawl, a shaft, a sector fixed to said shaft and provided with a locking lever normally held in locking position by, said pawl, a spring pressii'ig against said locking lever and tel'uling to bring it out from the locking position, an arm, loosely mounted upon said shaft, means for constantly oscillating said arm, means for oscillating said shaft from said arm when the locking lever is released from said locking pawl, a needle, means for reciprocating said needle from said shaftwhen oscillated, and means for returning the lever to its locking position after each full reciprocating movement of the needle.
