- This invention relates to fan attachments for rocking chairs, and has for its object to provide a simple and efficient structural arrangement and combination of parts whereby a cooling current of air is forced in a lateral direction across the head and neck of the person using the chair, and by means of which a constant rotation of the spirally arranged fans, in one direction, is effected by the oscillatory movement of the chair in a simple and efiective manner, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.

FAN ATTACHMENT FOR ROCKING-CHAIRS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AUGUST KURING and GUSTAF HOFFMAN, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fan Attachments for Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fan attachments for rocking chairs, and has for its object to provide a simple and efficient structural arrangement and combination of parts whereby a cooling current of air is forced in a lateral direction across the head and neck of the person using the chair, and by means of which a constant rotation of the spirally arranged fans, in one direction, is effected by the oscillatory movement of the chair in a simple and efiective manner, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a front elevation illustrating the present appliance operatively connected to one of the rockers of an ordinary rocking chair. Fig. 2, is a detail side elevation of the appliance. Fig. 3, is a horizontal section on line ww, Fig. 1. Fig. 4, is a detail plan view of the ratchet mechanism of the fanshaft. Fig. 5, is a longitudinal section of the same on line zcm, Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a transverse section of the same on line w w Fig. 4.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents one of the rockers of an ordinary rocking chair to which the present appliance is coupled to receive motion therefrom. 2 is a rail arranged in parallel relation to said rocker, and rigidly attached thereto by a pair of screw clamps 3, or other equivalent fastening means. In the present construction the clamps 3 also provide a ready and convenient means for the attachment to the rail 2 of the operating cords of the fan op erating ratchet mechanism hereinafter described. 4 are a pairof counterpart tripod legs pivotally connected at the top to a bracket head 5, which also provides a support for the before mentioned fan operating mechanism.

12 is the fan carrying shaft journaled in a bearing sleeve 13, which in turn is journaled in a bearing hub or boX 14 on the upper side of the bracket head 5 of the tripod above described.
15 are spirally arranged fans carried on one end of the shaft 12 aforesaid, and adapted in their revolution to cause a current of air to move transversely across the rocking chair in line with the head and neck of the person occupying the chair.
16 and 17 are reversely arranged ratchet disks, keyed or otherwise secured on the fan shaft 12, aforesaid.
18 and 19 are flanged operating drums loosely journaled on the bearing sleeve 13, aforesaid, and carrying reversely arranged pawls or dogs 20 and 21, having operative engagement with the ratchet disks 16 and 17 aforesaid. Each of said drums is turned in one direction by the coiled springs 22 or 23, and in the other direction by pull cords 24 or 25, wound in reverse directions 011 said drums, and extending to opposite ends of the rail 2 aforesaid, and preferably attached thereto by hooks 26 engaging in orifices formed therefor in the screw clamps 3 of the rail 2 aforesaid.
27 are resilient rings embracing sleeve extensions of the operating drums l8 and 19, and having movement through frictional engagement therewith. Said rings are provided with tangential slotted extensions which have sliding engagement with studs 29 on the sides of the pawls 20 and 21, and are adapted with the rotation of the drums 18 and 19 in one direction to move said pawls into operative engagement with their ratchet disks 16 and 17, and with a rotation of said drums in the opposite direction, to move said pawls out of engagement with said ratchet disks, and so prevent the clicking usual to the ordinary form of spring pawls.
In the operation of the present mechanism, the oscillation of the rocking chair by the user imparts a like oscillation to the rail 2, fixedly attached to one of the rockers of the chair. With the oscillation of said rail 2, the pull cords 24 and 25 are alternately drawn downward to cause an alternate positive rotation of the drums 18 and 19 in one and the same direction, and said drums acting alternately are adapted to impart, through the described individual ratchet mechanism, a constant rotation to the fan carrying shaft 12, in one direction. During the active operative connection of one operating drum with the fan shaft, the other drum is being turned in a reverse direction by a spring 22 or 23 so as to be in position for a like active operative connection with the fan shaft, in the continued cycle of operations of said fan driving mechanism.
Having thus fully described our said invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
'1. A fan attachment for rocking chairs, comprising a rail, means for attaching said rail to the rocker of a rocking chair, a tripod arranged at the side of said rail, radius links pivotally connected to the rail and tripod and adapted to permit independent rocking movement of said rail with relation to said tripod, a fan shaft mounted on the tripod in lateral relation to the said rail, spirally arranged fans on said shaft, and operative connections between the rail aforesaid and the fan shaft for imparting rotation to the shaft, substantially as set forth.
2. A fan attachment for rocking chairs, comprising a rail, means for attaching said rail to the rocker of a rocking chair, a tripod arranged at the side of said rail, radius links pivotally connected to the rail and tripod and adapted to permit independent rocking movement of said rail with relation to said tripod, a fan shaft mounted on the tripod in lateral relation to the said rail, spirally arranged fans on said shaft, a pair of reversed ratchet mechanisms mounted on said shaft, and individual pull cords operatively connected to said ratchet mechanisms and the respective ends of said rail,

4.
