FREDERIC G. COCHRAN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
Leiters Patent No. 102,777, dated May l0, 1870.
HEATmG-s'rovs.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part cf the eamo .ment in Stoves, Ranges, Src.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description 'thereof`, which will enable others skilled iii the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical cross-section of a store, illustrating my improvement, taken through the line a; a', Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same, taken through the line @fg/,tig 1. My invention has for its object to improve the construction of stoves, furnaces, heaters, ranges, 85e., for burning coal, peat, or other gaseous or t'nliginous fuel,
in such a way that the gases and other combustible products of said fuel may all be'eonsurned instead of being carried olf into` the smoke-tine or chimney, as is the case with ordinary stoves, and
It consists in the construction andl combination of various parts of the stove, as hereinafter more fully n described.
A represents an ordinary stove, ot" which- B isthe'tire-box;
C is the grate, and
I) is the ash-,pit,or drawer.
In the upper part of the stove A,l at a suitable distance above the grate C, is secured an iron box or retort, E, which is made close, and which is provided with a close door, F, directly opposite a close door, G, in the upper part of the stove A.
The box or retort is made with a sliding bottom, H, which lmay be drawn out wholly or partly to allow the contents of said box or retort to drop into the re-box B.
I are two or more pipes, the end's of which extend downthrough the tire-box B, and to, or nearly to, the grate C.
The pipes I extend up the sides and over the top of the box or retort E, and communicate with said box or retort E through holes in its topaud in the under side of the'top parts of said pipes, as shown in lgs. 1 and 2.
In using stoves, heaters, furnaces, 85e., wit-h my irnprovement attached, the retort or box .E has a suicient quantity of the fuel placed in it through the doors Cr F, the said two doors allowing the retort to be opened for the introduction of more fuel while the tire is burning, without allowing the smoke and gas to escape into the room.
'lhe doors F G are then closed and a lire is made in the tire-box B in the ordinary manner.
As the fire in the fire-box B becomes hot the box or retort E is heated, and the smoke, gas, and other volatile products of the fuel in saidv retort are driven ott', and, having no other way to escape, they pass down through the pipes I, and arc discharged in the lower part ot' the tire-box B, and have to pass up through the tire, in which passage the combustible parts are consumed, and the incombnstible parts escape Athrough the upper part of the stove 'A and through the pipe J int-o t-he chimney.
`By the time the fire in the re-box B burns low, the retort E will be filled with a red-hot mass of thoroughly coked fuel. The lire "in the tire-box B is then' raked down, and t-he sliding bottom H of the re# tort E drawn partly out, allowing 111e most of'the coke to drop into the fire-box B, a part of said coke being left upon the undrawn-out part of the sliding bottom to assist in starting the next supply of fuel.
rlhevbottom His then slid into its place, and an` other supply of fuel introduced into the said retort E, and so on indeiinitely.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The retort E, having close door F and sliding bottom H, combined with stove A, having close door G, the pipes I I, and the fire-box B, all relatively arranged as and for the purpose described.
2. A retort, having a sliding bottom, combined witl a stove, as and forthe purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 14th day ot' February, 1870.v
