BERNHARD JOHN VALENTINE .ADOLPl-I FLUGEL, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.`
TYPE-WiaITIne-v MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28,1912.
Application filed December 22, 1909. Serial No. 534,517.
To all 'whomz't may concern:
= Be it known that I, BERNHARD JOHN VAL- ENTINE ADOLPH FLUGEL, manufacturer, a subject of the King of Great Britain; residing at 2l Lime street, in the city f 'Lond on7 England, have invented certain ne-w and useful Improvements in or Relating to TypeWVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide type-writing machines with a special key-actuated carriage return` According to the present invention means for returning` the carriage are so combined and arranged-to act in conjunction with the typewriting machine that upon the end ci. the line being reached (1'. c. upon the carriage reaching the end of its travel to the left) thereuponv the return-key will release the carriage from the devices which normally hold the said carriage in posit-ion and also release or bring into operation the usuall motor by which the carriage is Vreturned along its guide-Ways to the extreme right hand position for which the machine may be set for the time being. The Aturning of the roller `for feeding the paper may then be separately and independently effected in the usual manner.
I will now proceed to describe my present invent-ion with reference to the accompany ing drawings, in which the figure shows a side elevation of the invention.
The toothed wheel A adapted to rotate it'reely around the shaft (L is drivenby any suitabley motor such as an ordinary spring clockwork motor (not shown) mounted on the main traine or other fixed part of the typeuf'riting machine and this wheel A gears with the toothed wheel B adapted to rotate freely around the shaft Z) and this latter wheel B in turn gears with the smaller toothed 'wheel (l adapted to-rotate lfi'eelv around the shaft c` in opposite direcA tioii to B. '.l`he.sha't'ts 'b and c arelcarried 'in the yoke-ends or forked ends D1 D2 ofthe volte-lever or'roeking-leverD which latter is `vpivoted or adapted to roel; or turn 4mally kept pressed in one direction (i. e.' in
the direction of the. arrow vby the spring` E; and means are provided such as the rod F to force the end (Z of said rocking-lever Din the OPPOSite direction to said arrow ai; the spring E keeping 'said end CZ ofl said lever D forced againstthe collar or abutment f fixed on the rod -F which latter in turn has afixed limit of movement forming its normal position and when in this normal position (as shown in the drawings) the end d of the rockingelever D is moved Jto its extreme right hand position against said abutnient f by the action of the spring E and thereby the toothed wheel B is forced into l gear with the teeth of the rack H which is thereby moved alongin the direct-ion of the arrow y-space by space (i. e. one space at a time) as and when any key of the type-A writing machine is operated; or a fixed number of spaces for tabulating purposes; while enforcing the end (Z of the rock lever D in the .opposite direct-ion to the arrow ai' through the medium of the rod F thereby the toothed wheel B is moved out of gear with the toothed rackv H and the toothed wheel C simultaneously moved into gear with the teeth of said rack H which latter is thereupon caused t0 automatically return, in one movement. to fthe limit of its travel in the direction of the arrow z whereupon on releasing the rod F the spring E will rock'the lever D and move the toothed support carrying the platenor roller 'or' means over or against u'hiel'i. the paper or other material is hold while. boing struck by the type; for example these rack teeth may be formed in a rack-bar such as H and this rack bar lil` may he rigidly fixed to the aforesaid traveling carriage (not shown) by `means of the arms orbraokets l and J.
ll a carriage retiirinltoy operating solely tor the purpose ot aetiiatii'ig the returning means oi the carriage.
That l claim is:- f
l. A device et the cln'iraeler described,
comprising a rocking-lever adapted to be adapted to be engaged by either of said Y I toothed vtheels,'means for normally pressving' the rocking lever in one Adirection to' cause one of the toothed AWheels to 4engage the rack, 'and means for moving at will the rocking lever in the opposite direction to cause the other toothed Wheel to engage the rack.
2* A deviee of the character described,
comprising a main-axle adapted to he` mounted G11-the frame of a typewriting ma-A chine, a drive gear Wheel rotatably mounted .with the drive gear Wheel, a smaller toothed Wheel mounted at the end of the other arm and intermeshing with the larger toothed Wheel, a rack adapted to be attached to the vtypewriter carriage and to be engaged by either of said toothed Wheels, a spring pressing against the end of the main stem of the roeking-lever and causing one of said toothed 'Wheels to normally engage said rack, and means for moving said main stem against the pressure of the spring to cause the other toothed Wheel to engage the rack.
AIn Witness'whereof I have hereunto set Vmy hand n presence of two Witnesses.
