Description

E. M. BOSLEY.
Steam Heater. v
No.102,757. Patented May 10, 12x70.
N-FEYERS, PHOTO-UTNOGRAPMER WASHINGTON. D C
amt dithe ELIJAH M. BOSLEY, or BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
Letters Patent N 102,757, and May 10, 1870.
STEAM-HEATING- APPARATUS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makingpart of the same.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be .it known that L'ELIJAH M. BosnnY, of the city and county of Baltimore, Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-heating Apparatus; and do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to th'e letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
In the drawingshigure 1 represents a vertical section.
Figure 2 represents a plan view with the top rernoved.
The object of my invention is to obtain the greatest possible amount of heating surface in the smallest space, and with great saving of fuel.
It consists in a peculiar arrangement of 'fire and water fines, more particularly shown in the drawings, and described in this specification.
It also consists in forming the boiler of a number of sections bolted together by flanges or their equivalerrts.
In the accompanying drawings A represents a hollow rectangular cylinder made in sections and bolted together, as plainly shown at a a.
The lower section B represents the ash-pit, made with an opening for the final out-letS of the smoke to the chimney.
Bolted to this section is the section 0, in the lower part of which is arranged the grate I.
The firllowing sect-ion D is provided with pipes K running from side to side of cylinder A and at right angles to the grate.
It is also provided with, the feedropening R for supplying the water. 7 I
The next following sect-ions, E F G, are likewise provided with pipes K: K K', eachset being arranged at right angles to each other. I
The uppermost sectiorrH is the steam-drum, from which the steam passesthrough the .openirrgs Q Q to any desired place or receptacle.
In this section is arranged the outlet N, provided with the damper O. v
The sections are all connected with each other by the openings P. These holes may, however, be made in one, by leaving out the connecting flanges b 12, shown. in fig 2, so as to make one opening instead of the three shown.
The return fines L are plainly shown in fig. 1, con: necting the sections with the ash-pit section B.
Instead of the lowersection being made of metal, it can be made of brick or other suitable material, it desirable. Y The pipes K K K" K running from side to side of the cylinder, and parallel to each other, can be made of any desirable shape, either round, as shown, or elliptical or triangular, to prevent the accumulation of dirt or sediment of any kind.
The operation of my improved heating-apparatusis as follows:
The fires being started, the heat passes between the pipes K, as shown by the arrows, then down through the retnrn'flues L, and up through the outlet-pipe M and N.
If desired, a damper can be arranged in the top of the return-fines, when a direct draught isobtained instead of going through the return-fines.
It. is often necessary when a slow generation ofsteam is desired, to close the dampers U, one of which can be arranged in each of the return-fines L or M, and one or all can, of course, be closed, when the heat passes directly to the chimney by opening the damper.
Having thus described my invention,
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. The heating-apparatus herein described, consisting of the hollow cylinder A, made in sections andv provided with thepipes K K K and openings I, when constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the cylinder A, pipes K K K" and openings P, the return-flue L provided with the dampers U, when arranged as herein described, and for the purpose set forth. 4
3. The combination and arrangement of the cylinder A, pipes K K K", openings P, return flnes L, with dampers U with the upper and lower outlets T and M, when all constructed substantially as herein snown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
' ELIJAH M. BOSLEY.
