Letters 1Patent No. 102,700, dated May. 3, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASHV-MARKERS.
The Schedule referred to in the Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GovmuvEUR M. NICKASON, of Ellenville, in the county of Ulster'and State of New York, have invented a new Marker for Carpenters, 86o.; and I hereby declare that-the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Drawing.'
Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved machine or cutter-head, showing the shaft upon which the disks are mounted, the screws for holding them in position, and the cutters.
Figure 2 is a section on linea: :c of iig. 1.
Gorrespondin g letters refer to identical parts in each of the Afigures.
This invention relates to a device for marking the places on window-blinds, sashes, and other articles where mort-ises are to be made, the object being to produce a device which shall mark with accuracy any number of bars, or the planks from which such bars are tovhe cnt, so that, when it is desired to prepare a.
large number of such bars which shall al1 be of. one size, it may be done with great certainty and rapidity.
The present invention is designed as an improvement upon the one for which Letters .Patent were granted to me on the 4th day of January, 1870; and
It consists in the combination and arrangement of the parts ot which it is composed, as will be more fully explained hereinafter. Y
A iu the drawing refers to a shaft to which the disks which carry the cutters or markers are attached,
which may be round or of any other suitable form, it`
being provided with a groove to preventthc disks from turning thereon. This shaft is to be suspended in bearings, and a rotary motion imparted to it by a pulley to be placed upon such shaft; or it may be hung in an oscillating frame, and to be moved across the bars to be marked.
B B refer to two disk's,which are to be fitted tothe l shaft A so as to move longitudinally thereon, there being a hub or projection upon the outer side of each one through which a screw-thread is to be formed for the reception of a set-screw, with which to secure them to the shaft when their proper position, for the time being, has been determined.
Across the inner faces of these disks one or more grooves are formed, to receive and guide the cutters or markers, as shown in iig. 2. These disks may be set'at any desired distance from each other within the limits of their range of movement-upon the shaft, so that any width of mortise may be marked. A
C O C C refer to the cutters or markers, which are fitted to slide inthe grooves formed in the faces of the l, disks. These -cutters consist of thin strips of steel, which are rounded at-their outer ends, as shown at fig.
2, such rounded ends being brought to a sharp edge by beveling one or both sides thereof.
'lhe inner ends of these cutters are to be provided with slots, as shown in fig.. 2, in order that a. bolt may be passed through them to secure them to the disks, and in order that they may be adj usted inwardly and outwardly with reference to lsuch disks, and thus be made to describe a larger' or smaller circle.
Any vdesired number of these cutters or markers may be used, by' providing additional grooves in the faces of the disks.
D D D D refer to screws or bolts which lsecure the;
cutters or markers to the disks, and E E to the setscrews which confine them upon the shaft.
F refers to a regulating-screw(of which there are two, one upon each side,) which is tapped into the face of one of the disks, it being for the purpose of determining the distance between the cutters.
Having thus described my invention,
\Vhat I claim, anddesire to secure hy Letters Patent ofthe UnitedStates, isp The arrangement of the shaft A,heads B B, markers G O, and adj ust-ing-screws F, when constructed as herein shown and described.
1u testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this day .of 1870.
G. NICKASON.
