FEED-BAG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1912.
Application filed April 20, 1909. Serial No. 491,109.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL C. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maplewood, in the county of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Bags; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in feed bags and has special reference to a feed bag having a grain holding compartment and a feeding compartment.
The principal object of the invention is to improve the general construction of feed bags having a ventilated feed compartment forming a receptacle from which the animal eats and a connected grain holding compartment.
Another object of the invention is to provide a means of novel character to regulate the flow of the feed from one compartment to the other.
A third object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of feed bag wherein the loss of feed will be prevented.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of a rigid feeding compartment, a grain holding compartment having a rigid bottom and flexible upper portions, and an opening between the two compartments provided with a novel closer.
The invention further consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and :*Figure l is a side elevation of a feed bag constructed in accordance with this invention showing the same in position on a horse. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is detail perspective view of the supporting frame.-
The numeral 10 indicates the body or manger compartment of the feed bag and this is preferably of inverted frusto-conical form provided with a concave bottom 11. This body is provided at the front with an opening covered with a wire screen as indicated at 12. The rear wall of the body portion is provided with an opening 13 having an arcuate upper outline as indicated at 14. Upon the rear wall of the body are mounted guides 15 in which moves a closure 16 having its lower edge bent inward as in dicatcd at 17 and its upper end bent over as at 18. This back wall is further provided with stops 19 to limit the upper move ment of the closure 16. To the rear of the body 10 is a grain receptacle provided with sides 20 and a curved rear wall 21. This part of the grain receptacle is securely attached to the body by any suitable means as by the rivet 22.
Extending upward from the body 10 is a supporting frame composed of side members 23, a top member- 24 and a center brace 25. Secured to this frame and to the top edges of the body and grain receptacle is a canvas or other fabric bag 26 provided with loose flaps 27 around the upper edge. These loose flaps are for the purpose of preventing the spilling of the grain and to protect the same as the bag is carried from placeto place by being folded in on top of the grain.
A head strap 28 serves to support the body portion of the device, going over the horses head in back of the ears when the device is being used as can be seen from reference to Fig. 1.
In order to provide for the support of the loose edge of the canvas bag 26 there is provided a throat strap 29 which goes around the throat of a horse as can also be seen from reference to Fig. 1.
In using the device the grain receptacle is filled with a sufficient quantity of grain and the closure 16 raised to permit the grain to be fed as slowly or as rapidly as may be desired, the peculiar shape of the upper edge of the opening providing a means whereby this may be regulated to a nicety. The device is then positioned on the horses head and the animal allowed to feed, the grain passing down through the opening by the action of gravity. It is to be observed that the back wall 21 comes down to a position at its lower edge close to the door or opening 13 so that all of the grain in the grain receptacle is fed therethrough.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come withinthe scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
In a feed bag, a manger including a rear Wall, said wall being provided with an opening, a closure for the opening slidably mounted on said wall, a grain receptacle exteriorly arranged and supported by said rear wall, an inverted U-shaped supporting frame secured to and extending upwardly from sald rear wall, a brace arranged lntermedlate the legs of the frame and connected at its ends to the bight of the frame and rear wall respectively, a fabric attached to the legs, bight and brace of the frame and t0 the rear wall, and a fabric attached to the upper edge of the grain receptacle and to the legs of the supporting frame.
