SPRING COMPBESSING AND `ASSIEMBLILBI'IG- DEVICE. i
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application med may 15,1911. semimszzwf To all whom 'it may concern.' p 7 Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. Ti'rus,
Jr., a citizen of the United States, and resi dent of Watertown, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Spring Compressing and Assembling Devices, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, ,is' a specification, like letters on the drawings. representing like parts. y
In assembling the valve parts of gasolene or like engines after these have been taken 'apart for cleaning or renewal of broken parts, it is a matter of considerable diiculty to compress land hold in a state of compression the stii spiral springs which control the valves,'as is necessary for rei 'placing the springs in operative relation to the valves. y
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a compact and conveniently operable device for quickly compressing a spring to the extent desired, and coperatve therewith, means for then holding the spring compressed and permitting'it to be reassembled with the valve, before the holdingl means is released. i To this end the invention consists of a device composed of relatively slidable members'carrying plates to compress the valve between them, with means for automatically holding such relatively slidable members-in the position to which they are` yforced .in compressing the sprin and in conjunction therewith, clamping evices adapted to be enga ed over the ends of thespring while thus eld compressed to hold thev same after the compressing elements are released.
.The invention will be more f'ullyi understood from the following'detailed description taken in connection with the accoml a central vertical section thigough y 'compressing elements, a spring bein s own panyin drawings and will thereafter be pointe out inthe 'ap ended claims.
relis Referring to the e s ring rawings: Fi
with the spring. Fig. 3 is an end view taken in section on line 3;-3 of Fig.l 2. Fig. 4 is an end view of the releasing nut. f u
Arod or bar 1 is threads 2 at one end or engagement by a hand nut 3 for slidably adjusting on said bar across plate 4. adapted to press against one side of the spring. The bar 1 maybe in any desired cross section, vbut is ably angular vso that the parts s idable thereon may be fitted thereto'` and held from turning movement.- As shown, this bar' is hexagonal this being a forni especially adapted for use wit ordinar valve constructions. .The bar 1 as s idably fitted thereto ay relatively heavy sleeve 5 formed at one end with'a cross plate 6 coratenteamays'i, 191e. l
Provided with screw refertypes of o erative with the plate 4 for compressing iece 11. The outer A pair of clamps 16 are provided to engage 80 the s rin as compressed between the plates 4 an 6, t ese clamps having fixed beaks 17 at one end for engagement over one end of the spring and slidable beaks 18 adjustable to engage the other end of the spring as by knurled nuts threaded on the clamps. 'The' slidable beaks 18 are held from turning so as topaline with the beaks 17. by a key way and pin connect-ion 20.
drawn out of the sleeve 5, a spring 21 shown as 'provided with a usual washer disk 22` which is to be assembled with the valve, is slipped over the bar to rest` on the late 4.
xed abutbe instantly com 100 In operation, the bar 1 having been 912% .The bar is then slid up into the s e'eve 5 DE pressed to the extent esired and is held so compressed by the pawl 7 snappin into `engagement with a tooth 10. Whi e the spring is thus compressed, the clamps 16 are engaged with the sides thereof, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and the slidable beaks 18 adjusted up by the nuts 19 so 'that the spring 1s gripped thereby.- The pressure of the spruig 1s, of course, at this time withstood by the engagement of the pawl 7 with a tooth 10 so that this pawl could not readily be disengaged by pressing on the thum piece 11. By now turning the releasing nut 3 a small amount in the proper direction, the pressure of the spring is transferred from the plates 4, 6 to the clamp 16 so that the pressure beingl taken oi from the pawl 7, it can be easily disengaged from the ratchet tooth and the bar 1 may then be withdrawn from the sleeve 5, leaving the spring valve. This provision of an instantly operable spring compressor along'with the secondary releasing means, illustrated herein as the releasing nut 3 in conjunction with the secondary or holding clamps'lt coperative as sefforth, is of much practical tating valve assemblingand replacing, for
example, enabling automobile engines to be repaired on the road and reassembled without loss of timewhile the outfit is compact,l p I vablewith such ratchet teeth.
simple and inexpensive.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new-and direto secure by Let ters Patent is: 1. A device of the kind described, comprising members mounted one in relation to the other for guided free sliding movement, one of said members having a handle,
adapted to impart thrusts in the axial line of the device and the other member 'being adapted to engage an abutment ina many ner to resist thrusts along said axial line,
andboth of said members extendin to o posite sides of the axis of the device su ciently to permit a spring to be symmetrii as cally disposed about said axis and be engaged when compressed by each of the members on opposite sides of the axis, and means for detachably holding said members interengaged at will to 'maintain a spring under compression.
2. A device of the kind described, comprising vmembers mounted one in relation to the other for guided free sliding movement, one of said members having a handle adapted to impart thrusts in the axial line of the device and the other member being adapted to engage an abutment in a manner to resist thrusts along said axial line, and both of said members extending to opposite sides of the axis of the device suiiiciently to permita spring to be s mmetrically disposed about said axis an be engaged when compressed by each of the members on opposite sides of the axis, said members being formed to engage the spring at opposite heldrby the lclamps 16 at its sidesV only, and thus free to be assembled with the im' portance 1n the saving of time and facili,
sides and to leave intermediate opposite side portions free and unobstructed so that holding clamps may be applied thereto, and means for detachably holding said members interengaged at will to maintain a spring under compression.
3. A device'of the kind described, comprising members mounted one in relation to the other for 'ded free sliding movement, one of said megubers having a handle adapted to impart thrusts in the axial line of the device and the other member being adapted to engage ah abutment in a manner to -resist thrusts along said axial line, and both of Said members extending to opposite sides of the axis of the device sufficiently to permit a spring to be s mmetrically disposed aboutsaidl axis and e engaged when comvpressed byeach of the members on opposite .sidesof the'axis, said membersbeing formed to engage lthe spring at opposite sides and to leave intermediate opposite side portions free and unobstructed lso that holding clam s may be applied thereto, and means 5 in said members interfor etachably hol engaged at-w1ll to maintain a spring under compression, said' means ,consisting of ratchet teeth on one of said members and a awl on the other of said members engageone of said members having a handle adapted' to impart thrusts in the axial line of the device and the other member being adapted to engage an abutment in a manner to re-l asist t rusts along said axial line, and both `of said members extending to opposite sides of the axis lof the device sufficiently to permit a spring to be symmetrically disposed asf about said axis and be engaged when com# I pressed by each of the members on o posite i sides of the axis, said members being ormed to engage the spring at opposite sides and to leave intermediate `o posite side portions free. and unobstructed so that holding clamps may be applied thereto, and means for detachably holding said members interengaged at will to maintain a spring under compression, said means consisting of ratchet teeth on one of said members and a pawl on the-other of said members engageable with such ratchet teeth, one of said members having a further provision for a lengthening adjustment of its operative portion relative to the other member without disturbing the interengaging hold between the members.
5. A device of the kind described, oomprising relatively slidable members formed to clamp between them a spring to be compressed with the spring engaged so as to h ave like pressures exerted thereon at/ opposite sides and with opposite exposed portions to receive holding clamps, a pawl and In testimony whereof, I have signed my ratchet locking connect-ion between said name to this specification, in the presence of members to hold the same with the spring two subscribin witnesses.
