IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY DERRICK-IAMPS.
The Schedule referred to in theseLetters Patent and making partrofthe lame To all whom 'it may concern g l i Be it known that I, J ONATHAN DILLEN, of Petroleum Centre, in the county of Venango and State of' Pennsylvanimhave invented certain new and useful Improvements n1 Safety Derrick-Lamps, and thefol-v lowing is a fnll, clear, and exact description ofthe same,
reference being had. to the accompanying drawings making a part of this speciiication, in \vhich-.
v Figure l represents an outside view lof vthe lamp as an article of Vlnanufacture :l-nd'trade, ready for the marke-t. i l
Figure 2, a sectional view vertically through the center of the lamp, showing the inode of securing and Ventilating the lid 0r cover and the wick-tubes, 86o.
My invention relates to hanging-lamps or torches for-illuminating places out of doors, especially in and about derricks, and machinery in the oil regions, whereby explosions are more dangerous and destructive to life and property than in most otherplaces; and
It' consists in making the body of the lampwith two or. more wick-tubes, cast all together of malleable iron, 'or other strong and durable metal, with .lugs or ears on which to hook a clamp, for securing rmly the lid to the body.
Also in providing a ventlating-tube and shield in the cover, for the escape of gas, and the-double flange,
Afor holding the packing between the lid and body.
Tolenable others to fmake and use my invention, I willl describe it .more fully, referring to the drawings and the letters marked thereon.
- The body A may be made of malleable cast-iron,
or other durable tenacious metal, cast with the wicktubes B B on.
.Also the ears a a, for the bail to be inserted, and y the. lugs or h ooks,bl b, forthe clampfbar D to hook onto, to secure the cover E firmly onftl'ie-lmdy by a y thumb-screw, (l, in .the center of the clamp-barv D.
' The lid or cover E is provided with a double-rim' c e',`in which the rubber gasket f f, or other 'elastic packing, is secured, so that the cover will fit on gastight, -thc cover being4 inade crowning, and thickened.
up in the central portion to give it strength where the clamp-screw cl, bears upon inland' is providedA on one side of the center with a small vent, through a tube h, on one side o f which'isgi shield, t,
On the outside of the bodyofv the lamp A'Vtwo or more loops or eye-s jj niaybe cast, in which to insert' a rod'F, or a hook, or any suitable instrument for trimming the lamp. j
Any desired number of wick-tubes maybe made: and used,v and the. gas generated by the heat-oi' the tubes, within the body of the lamp, will escape at the vent, and, if it takes firevat the tube, it will burn free#r ly and help to illuminate the place, Awithout the slight-A I est danger of' exploding the lamp or setting lire tothe derrick. i 1
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure g Witnesses:
J AMES H. SMITH, EDWIN A. STEVENS.
