Be it known that I, AUGUST Lnn'cn'rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electroplating, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
By the invention which forms the subject of my present applicatiomand which is 'an improvement in the art of electro-plating, I am enabled to produce an electrolytically deposited surface which is lustrous and of more pleasing appearance than nickel, extremely hard and durable, and, under all ordinary conditions of use, non-corrosive.
The improvement involves the electro coating or plating of articles with nickel and manganese, in what appears to be an alloy of these two metals, and is effected in the following manner: In an apparatus of the kind usually employed in the operation of electro-plating with silver or nickel, I
use an anode composed essentially of nickel and manganese to which has been added a suflicient proportion of tin to make an alloy, but in which the nickel very largely predominates, constituting, preferably 98 per cent. of the whole. This anode is used in a bath composed of or containing nickel ammonium sulfate and manganese ammonium sulfate, the nickel predominating, being "preferably present in the proportion of 85 per cent. to 15 per cent. of manganese. By means of this bath, articles of iron, steel, brass or other metals of not too soft or coarse a texture may be coated in' the ordinary way, with a surface greatly superiorto any other of which I am aware in the respects noted above. If it be desired to increase the hardness of the deposited surface asmall proportion of chromium, in solution may be added .to theelectrolyte.

What I claim is:
1. An electro-plating bat-h comprisingan anode of nickel a'nd manganese, and an electrolyte containing the salts of nickel and of manganese.
2. An electro-plating bath comprising an anode of nickel and manganese alloy and an electrolyte containing the salts of nickel and of manganese. l
3. An electro-plating bat-h comprising an anode of nickel and manganese in which the nickel predominates, and an electrolyte containing nickel and manganese, the nickel predominating.
4. An electro-plating bath comprising. an anode of nickel alloyed with from two to seven per cent. of manganese, and a bath containing nickel ammonium sulfate and manganese ammonium sulfate the nickel being present :in the proportions of from 7 5 to 85 per cent. to from 25 to 15 per cent, of manganese.
