To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT G. SoHERnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Connection for Sections of Hot-Air Pipe, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates principally to hot air pipe or stack which is rectangular in cross section and is employed between the studding and joist of houses, to convey the air from the furnace or point of distribution to where it is wanted, and to fittings or connections for such stack. This stack is usually made in sections and means are employed on the ends of the various sections so that they can be joined (usually telescopically) thereby forming a continuous conduit.
Because of the different dimensions of the spaces where the stack is to be used and other causes the trade demands such stack in a great many difl'erent dimensions or sizes, and so far as I am aware it has heretofore been necessary to get the various fittings for such stack (such as the boots at the bottom of the stacks where they connect with the round pipe from the furnace and the stack heads where the stacks are branched or the registers are attached) of the exact size of the particular stack employed.
My invention has for its object the provision of a connection whereby differentsizes of stack and fittings may be joined together. This will not only permit of the dealer carrying a smaller stock of fittings, but will also avoid trouble on the job where the same size fitting may be assembled. with different sizes of stacks. I secure this object by the structure shown in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective of a boot which forms the connection between the round pipe from the furnace and the rectangular stack, my invention being embodied therein, and Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the views.
The reference numeral 1 designates the round collar portion of the boot into which the round pipe is usually inserted. Secured to this by seaming are two pieces, 3 and 4, the meeting edges of which are secured together and which are so shaped that the ends opposite the collar form the forms the other rectangular opening 5, to be joined with the stack. The piece 3 forms one long side, 6, and the two short sides, 7 and 8, of the rectangular opening, 5, while the piece 4;
long side 9 thereof.
Each corner of the rectangular portion of the boot is split and the short sides are cut back, as shown at 10, so that the long sides may be pressed together to adapt them to fit thinner stack. To the longer sides are secured by the diagonal crimping, 11, the strips, 12, which extend down upon the outside of the boot and are then bent back upon themselves to form the pockets, 13, which are adapted to receive the edge of the section of stack which joins the boot.
The ends of the strips, 12, are bent around the corners at 14, and folded inwardly over the short sides at 15. This construction permits the long sides to be pressed together or separated to some extent to receive the ends of the sides of different sizes of stack, and at the same time closes and reinforces the split corners.
By reference to Fig. 1, it will be observed that cut out portions or notches 16, are provided in the strips, 12, at the bottom of the pockets 13, which serve to expose a portion of the adjoining section when in position within the pocket 13.
In the two short sides, 7 and 8, are cut and pressed out straps 17, which may be used conveniently with strips of ten nailed to the studding for securely locating the piece in the desired position.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An adjustable connection for rectangular stack comprising a piece of pipe the corners thereof adjacent the end being splitand cut away, two opposite sides being provided with pockets for the reception of the end of an adjoining section, and the metal forming said pockets being bent around the corner and folded over the adjacent sides so as to close said split corners.
2. An adjustable connection for hot air stack comprising a pipe of rectangular cross section, the corners adjacent the end being split and cut away, pieces of metal folded over and secured to two opposite sides, said pieces being folded backwardly upon themselves to form pockets and the ends thereof being bent around the corners of the pipe and folded over the adjacent sides so as to close said split corners.
3. An adjustable connection for-hot air stack comprising a pipe of rectangular cross section, the corners adjacent the end-being split and cut away, pieces of metal folded over and secured to two'opposite sides by diagonal crimping of the metal and the side over which it is folded, said pieces being folded backwardly upon themselves to form .pockets and the ends thereof being bent around the corners-of the pipe and folded over the adjacent sides so as to close said split corners.
4. Anwidjustable connection for hotair stack comprising a pipe of rectangular cross section, the corners adjacent the ends being cut away, pieces-0f metal folded over and secured to two opposite sides by diagonal crimping of the metal and the side over which it is folded, said pieces being folded backwardly upon themselves to form pockets, said pockets having notches in thebottom thereof and the ends of said-piecesbeingbent around the corners of the pipe and :t-angular cross section,

Aconnection ing a pipe having an area at one end of rect-he corners adjacent the ends being splitand cut away, pieces of metal folded over and securedto the ends of said pipe upon two opposite sides by crimping the 'fold and the end included said pieces of metal being extended onthebutside of said pipe beyond said crimped portion, said extended portionbeing-folded back upon itself to form pocketshaving notches 'in' the bottom thereof adapted to expose to view from theoutside of the pipe a portion of'the adjoining section-when in position within said pockets.
