To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, LEON F. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Morgane Point, near La Porte, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Stripping Vheels from Shafts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for stripping wheels from shafts, and it has for one of its objects to produce a simple and improved device whereby this work may be accomplished speedily, etliciently and with a slight expenditure of manual power.
With these and other ends in view which will be hereinafter fully described as the nature of the invention is better understood, the said invention consists primarily in the construction of a hydraulic jack or device whereby the power initially employed may be gradually multiplied.
The invention further consists in the combination with the hydraulic jack of a screw jack whereby the hydraulic jack may be securely mounted in initial position for operation.
The invention further consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the cla-im.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings1,-I `igure 1 is a side elevation partly in section showing the improved stripping device mounted in position for operation to strip a propeller wheel from a shaft. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view enlarged taken on the line 34-3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4e is a sectional view taken on the line 4;-4 in Fig. 3.
Corresponding parte in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
A yoke 1 of heavy steel or other suitable material is provided near the ends thereof with apertures 2, 2 for the passage of screw threaded stems or shanks 3, 3 each of which is provided at one end, which for convenence will be called the inner end, with a hook 4, the bill of said hook being spread and iattened so as to readily engage the hub of the wheel that is to be stripped. Nuts 5 are threaded upon the outer ends of the Shanks 3.
The yoke 1 is provided with a centrally disposed screw threaded aperture 6 for the passage of a jack1 screw 7 having at its upper end a ratchet wheel 8 which is enga'ged by a reversible pawl 9 carried by a lever 10 which is fulorumed upon the outer end of the jack screw where said lever may be retained between a stationary collar 11 and a set collar 12. The lever 10 has been shown as provided with a socket 13 for the reception of a bar or handle 14 to give increased leverage. The pawl is provided with a latch handle 15A whereby it may be conveniently reversed to rotate the jack screw in the desired direction. rl'he pawl and ratchet mechanism is to be of any suitable well known construction and is not herein shown in detail.
16 designates a cylindrical 'casing of solid steel having a longitudinal bore or socket 17 open at one end only and in which a solid plunger head 18 is slidably mounted, said plunger head beingprovided with a packing cup 19 of leather or the like. The head of the cylindrical casing 16 has been shown as provided with a boss or projection 20 having a recess 21 for the reception of a reduced portion at the inner end of the jack screw 7 constituting a spindle 22 which is swiveled in the recess 21.
Suitably connected with the cylinder 16 at or near the solid head of said cylinder is a pump consisting of a tube or cylinder 23 wherein a solid piston 24: of small area is guided for reciprocation, said piston being provided with suitable packing. The pistou stem 25 is pivotally connected with the operating lever 26, one end of which constitutes a handle and the other end of which is connected by a link 27 with a lug or bracket 28 upon the cylinder casing 16. Suitably mounted upon and connected with the pump cylinder 23 is a receptacle or reservoir 28 serving as a container for the liquid which is to be forced by the pump into the casing 16, a spring actuated intake valve 29 being provided to control the passage of liquid from the reservoir to the pump cylinder. The valve 29 is slightly spring pressed in the direction of its seat so that it will yield readily to the suction of the piston 2li.
Said valve is provided with a stem 30 lying in the path of a screw threaded rod 31 which is threaded into the receptacle 28 and which, by turning it slightly in one direction may be withdrawn so as not to interfere with the valve, while by turning the rod slightly in the opposite direction, the valve may be displaced from its seat. A discharge valve 32 controls the passage of liquid from the pump cylinder into the casing 16, said valve being provided with a stem 33 which is extended slightly beyond the port 34; which is obstructed by the intake valve 29 and which lies in the path of the piston 23. It will be seen that by forcing the piston inwardY the valve 32 may be positively unseated by the piston contacting with the valve stem.
In the operation of this invention, the hooks 4 are placed in engagement with the hub of the wheel which is to be stripped from the shaft, and the yoke 1 is arranged diametrically across the end of t-he shaft. The jack screw 7 is loosened so as to permit the cylindrical casing 16 to be interposed between the screw and the shaft, the latter being made to abut' upon .the plunger 1S. The jack screw 7 is now tightened, thus assembling the parts in position for operation. When the jack screw has been securely tightened, the pump is brought into requisition, the lever handle 26 being operated to actuate the piston which when moved in one direction, or outwardly in the pump cylinder, will unseat the valve 29 and cause a portion of the liquid contents of the reservoir 28 to enter the pump cylinder. Vhen the movement of the piston is reversed the valve 29 is forced to its seat, and the charge is projected through the port obstructed by the valve 32 into the cylindrical casing 16, forcing the plunger 1S outwardly in the latter. The operation is continued until the wheel is stripped from or sutliciently loosened upon the shaft, it being obvious that the yoke carrying jack screw may be readjusted as often as may be needed.
Vhen the plunger 1S has been forced outward to the limit of its movement the screw threaded stem 31 may be moved in the reservoir 28 to unseat the valve 29, after which, by forcing the piston 211 inward to the limit of its movement, the valve 32 will be unseated, and the liquid contents of the casing 16 will be free to return to the reservoir 28. 55
is suiciently small as compared with that of the plunger head 18 moving in the cylindrical casing. Actual practice has proven this device to be thoroughly efficient for the purposes for which it is provided.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is i A device for stripping wheels from shafts comprising a yoke, screw threaded shanks adjustably associated therewith and having hub engaging hooks, a jack screw extending through the yoke, a casing swiveled upon the jack screw and having a plunger, a pump cylinder mounted upon the casing and having a port opening into said casing and a spring actuated valve to obstructthe port, said valve being provided with a stem extending longitudinally into the pump cylinder, a branch extending laterally from the pump cylinder, a liquid receptacle supported by said branch, a spring actuated valve to obstruct the passage through the branch, a
rod extending longitudinally through the liquid receptacle and having threaded engagement with the latter, said rod being adapted to engage and unseat the obstructing valve, and a piston operating in the pump cylinder and adapted to unseatrthe valve obstructing the port opening from the latter into the casing.
