To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. Moon, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Temporary Binders,-of'which 'the' following is a specification.
My inventionrelates particularly to temporary binders provided with means for preventing unauthorized removal of leaves therefrom, such as loose-leaf ledger-s; and
I my primary object is to provide ,in binders tremities with guides A of the type indicated improved means for operating and locking the binder through the medium of a single key.
The invention is illustrated in the preferred embodiment ther'eofin the accompanying drawing, in which.

In the construction illustrated, A, A rep resent the clamping members or jaws of a loose-leaf binder; A the back upon which said clamping members are transversely slidable, said back being provided at its ex A, telescopic binding-posts oining the edge portions of the clamping members A, A; A mechanismserving to open and close the binder, said mechanism including a right and left threaded screwrod A journaled on the binder-back; B, a key-controlled device throughv the medium of which the screw-rod A may be actuated; and B a connecting member joining the barrel of the device B to the screw A.
The binder may be of any approved construction. In the COIlStlUCtlOI1,SlIO\Vl1, the rod A is journaled on the back A and confined against longitudinal thrust at the point 1 in a well understood manner. Said rod extends longitudinally of the binderback practically from one end of the binder to the other. The mechanism A includes pairs of links 2 which have pivotal connection in the usual manner with'the clamping members and with nuts 3 mounted on the screw-rod A. It will be understood that when the rod A is rotated in one direction,
the binder-frame will be opened or ex panded; and when the red A is rotated in the opposite direction, the binder-frame will be contracted, the clamping members slidingltransversely with relationto the binder- The device B preferably comprises a block 4 which is screwed to the inner surface of the binder-back near one' .end thereof,
said block 4having a bore 5 in alinement with the adjacent end of the rod A; a keycontrolled and actuated barrel 6 extending I through the bore in the block 4 and provided with a circumferential groove 7 which receives a' pin 8 adaptedto prevent long-itudinal movement of the barrel with relation to the block 4; and key-retracted barrel-locking devices 9 connected with the block 4 and barrel 6. Each guide A comprises a removable guide-plate 10 which extends transversely across the end portion of the binder-back, being spaced with relation thereto to enable the flanges 11 of the clamping members to pass between them and the back. The block 4 is located be neath one of the plates 10, and issecur ed'between said plate and the back by means of screws 12.
The barrel 6 is rotatablein the bore 5, but normallylocked against rotation bythedvice 9. The barrel 6 is partially severed longitudinally by a key-receiving slot 13 adapted to receive a special key. There are a series of the locking devices 9, three of said devices being shown. Each device comprises a plunger 14 and a ball 15 received in a transverse bore 16 with which the key-barrel is provided; and a plunger 17 and spring 18 received in a registering bore 19 with which the block 4 is provided on one side of the bore 5. The springs 19 are held in place by a slide 20 connected with one lateral wall of the block 4. The bore 16 in tersects the key-slot 13. In Fig. 3, the key is shown partially inserted, thereby lifting the ball and innermost plunger 14 of the first device 9 and raising the plunger 17 substantially above the wall of the bore 5.
