To all whom it may concern:
Be' it known that-I, JULIUS KAUFFMANN,
a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and
resident of Berlin, Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Processes for Renovating Cotton-Waste, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a process of extracting dirt, oil, etc., from dirty cotton or other waste, by washing the same for the purpose of dissolving out the oil by means of a solvent evaporating the solvent and drying the waste so that it may be used again.
The feature of the invention consists in this that in all three stages of the process air under pressure alone is employed for agitating and loosening the waste.
Apparatus for performing this process is shown diagrammatically by way of example in the accompanying drawing.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is a flat vessel in which is arranged on supporting cheeks 3 a perforated fiat receptacle 2. This receptacle serves to hold the Waste to be purified, which waste is introduced through manhole doors on the upper side 4 of the vessel.
The pipe connection 9 serves for the introduction of the purifying agent, carbon tetrachlorid). The pipe 11 cont-rolled by the valve 10 serves to connect the vessel either with the pipe 13 leading to the chimney and controlled b valve or cock 12 or with a pipe 15 controlle by valve or cook 14 and leading to a separating chamber. The vessel is heated by means of a coil 16 supplied with steam which does not admix with the solvent.
17 is a pipe controlled by a valve 18 for draining off that portion of the solvent which is not volatilized in the distillation process and the oil, etc., separated from the waste.
19 is a dome provided with a branch 20 leading to the cooler 23 and through which the volatilized solvent passes off.
The finely perforated pipe 21 arranged at the bottom of the receptacle along the side thereof and connected to a high pressure fan by a branch 22 serves to carry air through the Waste While the same is being Washed by the solvent at the commencement of the distillation or while the waste is being dried.
In addition to the ordinary fittings a gage glass is provided on the vessel 1 for the purpose of observation of the level of the liquld therein.
The waste is purified in the following manner: Firstly the waste is introduced through the manhole doors 5 into the receptacle 2; after the valves 12 and 18 are closed the solvent is run in up to the necessary level and air is driven from a high pressure fan through the tube 21 and through the waste in the receptacle 2 in such manner that all parts of the waste are thoroughly agitated and washed with the solvent. The separated oil and the superfluous portion of the solvent are removed through plpe 11, valves 10 and 14 to the separating chamber. Distillation of the solvent is then effected by heating the coil 16; the valves 10, 12, 14 and 18 bein kept closed. This operation is continue until the level of the liquid in the vessel 1 falls below the bottom of the receptacle 2. Valve 18 is then opened in order to lead off the non-volatile parts of the solvent and the separated oil from the vessel. The distillation may thereupon be repeated by running in fresh solvent through the pipe 9 and heating by means of the heating coil 16. After purification, drying is effected by passing air from a high pressure .fan through the receptacle 2 by way of the erforated tube.21. Havin described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by" Letters Patent of the United States is -v The herein described process of renovating solid cotton waste, consistin in washing the same with a volatile solvent liquid and blowing compressed air through the liquid to agitale the waste, evaporating'the solvent by the action of heat and simultaneously blowing compressed air through the waste to prevent packing, and finally drying the waste and blowing off dust by the action of compressed air.
