Description

Patented May 14,1912.
Inventor Attorneys GEORGE W. ELLIOTT, OF MOHALL, NORTH DAKOTA.
PLOW ATTACHMEN T.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1912.
Application filed August 7, 1911. Serial No. 642,614.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE WV. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mohall, in the county of Renville and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Plow Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to improvements in subsoil attachments for gang-plows, especially packers therefor.
The object of the invention is to provide for suitably accommodating the device to surface conditions.
A further object is to effect suitable connection between the packer and the plowframe with the view of contributing to the aforesaid result.
A still further object is to promote simplicity of construction, expeditious action of the parts, and incxpensiveness of manufacture of the same.
The invention consists of certain instrumentalities and features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and defined by the claims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made as relates to the detailed construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective of the invention as applied to the plow-frame of a gang-plow. Figs. 2 and 3 represent a side elevation, and a sectional elevation of a packer-wheel, respectively. Figs. st and 5 represent a plan and an edge elevation of an adjunctive member respectively, especially for effecting connection between the packer-frame and its plowframe attaching member or bar. Fig. 6 is a broken partly sectional and partly edge elevation of the clip and bolt attaching connection between the plow-frame and the packer-frame brace. Fig. 7 is a section produced upon line X-X of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a suitable receptacle 1 for carrying the weight for rendering the contrivance effective, as well understood, which weight may include boulders as shown, or otherwise to the number aggregating, say, about one hun dred and seventy five pounds. The weightcarrying receptacle 1 is secured upon lateral endwise-disposed members or castings 2 having suitably bolted thereto cast journalboxes 3, which receive an axle 4 bearing packing wheels 5 preferably five in number. Said wheels are preferably tapered at their rims outwardly to suitably engage and pack the upturned soil immediately following such upturning thereof as desirable in plowing or cultivating purposes, as well understood by those familiar with agricultural pursuits.
To the castings or supports 2 are suitably bolted the inner or rear ends of a frame 6, having in continuation thereof, at its forward side, about centrally, a bracing or reinforcing offset member or extension 6*; and, suitably superposed with respect to the latter, is a preferably disk-like member or casting 7, having depending clip-like members 8 receiving the frame 6 and offset 6' to which they are suitably bolted as at 9, to hold the part or member 7 clamped firmly down thereon.
A preferably angled draw-bar or member 10 is provided for effecting connection between the clamped-down casting or member 7 of the packer-frame (l and the plow-frame 11. as disclosed in Fig. 1. The draw-bar or member 10 is suitably connected at one end as at 12, to a tongue-like extension of the casting or member 7 the connection therebetween and the plow-frame being loose or such as to allow of the independent, approximately universal or wabbling movement of the parts at that point, which connection will be later described. The purpose of this arrangement or connection is to allow of the accommodation of the packer to surface-conditions, as in contacting with obstacles, such as stumps, rocks or boulders, &c., without affecting the position 01' action of the plow-gang or its carrying frame, as will be readily appreciated. The connection aforesaid, includes a clip 12" adapted to receive a lateral member of the plow-frame 11, to which it is suitably bolted as at 13, said clip having a right-angled extension, as at 1 1 between which and the draw-bar 10, loose eye-ended bolt connection is effected, two interconnected or coupled-together eye-bolts designated as 15 and 16 being employed for that purpose, one eye-bolt, itself having pivoted connection with the draw-bar 10 and the other eye-bolt being inserted through said right-angled extension or arm 14. An offset or arm 14 extends laterally from the clip 12, at its upper end to suitably aid in supporting and forming a bearing for the draw-bar 10 in proper position with respect and 6.
A suitable angled brace or spreading bar 17 for holding the packer-frame and the plow-frame in requisite relation, is provided, its respective ends being loosely connected by a bolt 18 to the casting 7, and to a clip 19 suitably bolted to the frame 11, as at 20, all as disclosed by Figs. 1 and 7 this connection being substantially the same as that described in effecting connection between the draw-bar 10 and said pl0wframe.
From the foregoing it is thought that the advantages and benefits of my invention will be fully appreciated.
What is claimed is:
1. A device comprising a packer, including a frame-member therefor and .adjunctive member thereof, a draw-bar, a plow-frame, and means of connection between said packer frame-member and said draw-bar for the independent movement of said packer frame, embracing a member having fixed relation to said frame-member and connected to said 'drawbar, said fixed member having pendent clip-like members one receiving and secured to said packer frame-member and the other secured to an adjunctive member of the latter.
2. A device comprising a packer, including a frame therefor, said frame having an ofiset extension, a disk-like member having depending clip-like members adapted to receive the forward portions of said frame and Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
said offset extension, means for securing said clip-like members to said frame and said extension, a plow-frame, means effecting pivotal connection between saiddisklike member and said plow-frame, a drawbar, means eifecting pivotal connection between said plow-frame and said draw bar, and means connecting said draw bar to said offset-extension.
3. A device comprising a packer, including a frame therefor, said frame having an ofiset extension, a disk-like member having depending clip-like members adapted to receive the forward portions of said frame and said offset extension, means for securing said clip-like members to said frame .and said extension, a plow-frame, means effecting pivotal connection between said disklike member and said plow-frame, a clip applied to said plow frame and having at its upper end an offset arm and at its lower end a lateral extension, and interconnected bolts connected to said offset arm and said lateral extension respectively, the upper bolt effecting connection between said draw bar and said clip, and means connecting said draw bar to said offset-extension.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. ELLIOTT.
