The tab'16 is inserted in the keepers, in front of the upper keeper 26 and back of the lower keeper 25, and the shoulders 18 of the tab engage the upper edge of the keeper 26. The stems of the keeper 19 are spaced apart. to acne spond with the spacing of the keepers so that they may both be engaged with keepers, as shown in Figs. 1 and and the shoulders formed by the offsets 21 will engage the bead 11 upon which the lower edge of the tab rests, as shown in Fig. 2. The two tabs may be separated from each other on the frame, as shown in Fig. 1, but the off-set arrangement of the tab 19 permits the tab 16 to be located behind the tab 19, as shown in Fig. 4, whenever desired. The keepers may retain the tabs in position on the frame without the necessity of any locking devices but for security I prefer to provide the frame with protuberances 29 to engage the openings 22 in the stems of the tabs. These protuberances are rounded and the stems may be readily engaged and disengaged therewith by simply forcing the tabs in and ulling them out and without the necessity of lifting the lower ends of the stems. This means forms an eflective locking engagement between the tabs and the frames which is sufiicient to prevent disengagement of the tabs from the frames or disarrangement of the tabs on the frames under all ordinary conditions.
The invention is especially useful in maintaining a card index system wherein it is desired to provide two or more classifications because the index frames are constructed to receive a plurality of tabs. and, as shown in Fig. 4. one of the tabs may be located behind the other. This latter feature is im portant because it enables the positioning of the tabs on the frame in a mannerwhich will permit all of the classification designations to be readilv observed and read.
The frame embodies no additional parts for my present invention except the integral keepers which are stamped up from the frame during the process of manufacture and hence involves no appreciable additional cost. All of the frames may be thus provided with keepers but this is not neces ary and a set. of frames solely for index purposes may have the keepers if preferred. The tabs can be readily applied to and re moved from the frames Without removing the latter from the trays in which they are stored and when the tabs are applied they will be securely held against displacement.
To facilitate the insertion and removal of? the tabs T prefer to stamp the keeper 25 to an inclined position. as shown in Figs. and 3, so that the tabs can the more readily be moved to and from locking position in engagement with the protuberance or projection 29.
What I claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
1. A printing device frame comprising a plate having a keeper offset on one side thereof withinthe periphery of the plate and open at one end and a detachable tab seated in said keeper.
2. A printing device frame comprising a plate having a keeper stamped up and offset therefrom atone side of the plate within the periphery'thereof and open atone end, and a detachable tab seated in said keeper through itsopen end.
3. A printing device frame having a keeper open at one end, and a detachable tab having a stem seated in said keeper through its open end.
4. A printing device frame having a keeper stamped up and offset therefrom on the front of the frame and open at one end, and a detachable tab seated in said keeper through its open end.
A printing device frame having a plurality of keepers thereon spaced apart and extending adjacent to the top of the frame approximately from end to end thereof, each keeper being open at one 9 .(l, and a detachable tab seated in one of said keepers through its open end.
(i. A printing device frame having a keeper thereon below its upper edge and open at one end, a detachable tab seated in the keeper through its open end. and shoulder on the tab to engage the frame.
7. A printing device frame having to: alined keepers thereon, and a detachable tab having a stem seated in both of said keen ers to hold the tab on the frame.
8. A printing device frame having two alined keepers thereon on opposite sides thereof. and a detachable tab seated in both of said keepers to hold the tab on the frame.
.9. A printing device frame having a keeper thereon open at one end. a detachable tab seated in said keeper through its open cod. and means for locking the tab on the frame.
10. A printing devi e frame having an open-ended keeper thereon below its upper edge. a projection below the keeper, a tab eatcd in and extending through said keeper.
5 each stem seat d in a pair of said keepers.
13. A printing device frame having a plurality oi" keepers thereon, a pair of detachab it Ms arranged one in front of the other and one projecting beyond the other, said tabs having stems seated in said keepers.
14, A printing device having keepers disposed in a series extending in a direction across the device, a detachable tab having a pair of spaced stems engaged with non adjacent keepers, and another detachable] tab having a stem engaged with a keeper JOSEPH S. DUNCAN.
