To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARK ROBINSON, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Look- Ferrules, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to ferrules and has for its object to provide a new and improved device for looking a trace to the end of a whifiletree.
The device consists practically in a metal portion hollowed out for the reception of the end of a whiffletree, a solid hub of less diameter than the hollowed out portion joined to the solid end of the metal portion, and an oblong nut at the outer end of the hub, all cast integral, together with an oblong block arranged to loosely engage the hub portion and supported by a collar rotatably engaging the end of the metal portion first mentioned.
Other details of construction will be hereinafter described and disclosed by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a side view of the device complete and in position to be engaged by a trace. Fig. 2, is an end view thereof. Fig. 3, is a longitudinal sectional view of the same with the block and collar portions removed. Fig. 4, is an end view of the device with the block portion in the position the same occupies while engaged by a trace, the oblong nut portion, however, being broken away, the line 33 indicating the center thereof and corresponds with the sectional view 3 to the extent that view 3 sections the same, and Fig. 5, is an enlarged view of the oblong block and collar portions detached.
The metal portion 10 is hollowed out at 11 as a means whereby the same may be made to engage the end of a whiflletree. A solid end portion 12 remains to provide a hub for the reception of the collar 13 and to the end of which is provided the hub 14, the oblong nut 15 being at the outer end of the smaller hub 14. A rim 16 with a vertical edge 17 encircling the solid portion 12 provides an inner support for the collar 13 and a pin 18 penetrating the solid portion 12 as shown provides an outer support for the same. The oblong block 19 cast integral with the collar 13 extends longitudinally with and loosely engages the hub 14. A slot 21 is cut into the collar 13 and extends half way around the same and furnishes a path for the pin 18 in the rotation of the collar 13 around the solid portion 12, the vertical edges 20 serving to interrupt and stop such rotation.
In the practical operation of the device the trace is slipped over the oblong nut portion 15 and on to the hub 14 and oblong block 19 while in the relative positions shown in Fig. 1. The draft on the trace carries the oblong block portion 19 to the position shown in Fig. 4 and the collar 13 rotating upon the solid portion 12 is brought to a stop when one of the vertical sides 20 comes in contact with the pin 18.
The pin 18 is always on the under side of the solid portion 12 and with the construction of the collar 13 having the slot 21 extending half way around the same as shown, a uniform construction of the complete device is provided, whereby there are no rights and lofts, but one construction will answer for both ends or either end of the whi'llletrec, a locking of the rotation of the collar 13 being effected whether the rotation is to the right or the left when the oblong block portion 19 has assumed the position shown in Fig. 4. It will be seen that this construction will hold the end of the trace horizontal, preventing the same from sagging and the oblong nut portion 15 extending transversely of the opening in the trace will serve as a complete lock against the same escaping from the hub portion 14.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,
