THREAD-CUTTING APPARATUS.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, SIMON FREY, a citizen of the Swiss Republic, and a resident of 17 Mythenstrasse, Zurich, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread-Cutting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in actuating and lubricating means for thread cutting devices of the character employing a plurality of dies, each having thread cutting faces thereon, the entire apparatus being embodied in a single composite structure.
The invention will be more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and will be more particularly pointed out in and by the appended claims.
In the drawings :--Figure 1 is a view, partly in section and partly in elevation, of an apparatus embodying my invention. Fig.' 2 is a sectional view on the line A-B of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view partly in elevationV and partly in section, of a portion of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are enlarged detailed sectional views of parts of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out this invention, and referring to the drawings, a stock body a is provided with a square frame b, for the reception of coacting dies 1, 2, 3 and 4, and two oil cavities c and d. The stock body a is circular with respect to its plane and has provided on its periphery, radially extending rectangular-shaped recesses A. The periphery of the stock is surrounded by a band B, which, at its inner circumference, has, at one edge, a projection B engaging in a groove a7 in the stock. This projection B has at its inner side an annular groove B, which communicates with oil receptacles c and cl by means of by-passes a in the frame b. The band B is provided with an aperture b which is disposed in alinement with the apertures A in the stock and extends to the projection B. Through this aperture b projects a pawl C adapted to oscillate on a pivot C and is located within a cavity CO of a handle socket D secured to the band B by means of countersunk screws S. The end of the said pawl gliding on the circumference of the stock in the central position, so engages in the recesses A, that when turning the handle socket by the aid of a tube Ve Specification of Letters Patent.

screwed into it, the stock with the dies will be turned around the piece of work, as for example, a pipe, inserted between the latter. In order to cause the said pawl to have the tendency of always taking a central position, that is to say, a position radial to the stock, a coiled spring F is provided on each side thereof, which act-s upon laterally projecting arms C on the pawl. From each side of the said handle socket set screws Gr and Gr project into the cavity C0 toward the said pawl arms, whereby the oscillation of the pawl can be restricted to one side only or the pawl rendered inoperative. The adjustment of the said screws, thus facilitates the use of the stock and dies in either ratchet brace fashion or in ordinary handle fashion.
Suitably apertured face plates 01.5 and a are provided for the stock a, which form fluid tight compartments of the cavities 0 and el. The handle socket D has a channel H branching from the middle to each side. This channel leads to the groove B of the projection of the band B and is in communication with the interior of the tube E forming part of the handle. The free end of the latter is closed by means of a tightly fitting detachable cap J and contains a piston K inwardly movable by a coiled spring K. This piston serves to force lubricating fluid into the tube E through the channel I-I into the groove B, from whence it passes through the slots a into the oil receptacles 0 and (Z, and from there through the frame b to the dies as will be subsequently described.
The two receptacles c and cl are arranged in communication with each other by means of a slot p so that the lubricant contained therein can pass to and fro. In the slot p is a conical plug Q having a portion semicircular in section whereby lubricant can be passed from either of the receptacles c and cl through the slot 79 into a port r formed in communication therewith in the frame b. The side of the die 3 bearing against the frame Z) is provided with a flat recess f from which a port t leads to the cutting surface of the die 3. The fluid which enters the port r flows into the recess s and from there through port t to the cutting surface of the die 3, where it issues and thus lubricates t-he surface of the work to be operated upon to facilitate the cutting. The recess s is of such a length that there is no position of adjustment of the die in which it will be cut off from the port r. The plug Q can be turned and thus the port r is opened or closed. n
The handle socket D has two lateral projecting portions L. Between these portions and the band B a space is provided into which projects the ends ofa band M, each of the ends having an aperture, as shown in Fig. l, and which is detachably secured to the handle socket D and the band B by means of screws N. vDiametrically opposite the handley socket D, a handle D is secured to the band M by means of screws. After turning back thescrews N, the band M with a handle Dcan be removed from the stock a as indicated in'dotted lines of Fig.` 8, and the stock and dies operated with a single handle.
Onl the lower edge of the band B is an eX- tension b which fits accurately into a ring like ygroove of the cover a5 and forms a joint'preventing the oil leaving the surface of the stock and dies.
The stock and dies described may be turned at will with one of two handles in either direction and a continuous supply of lubricant is provided for the operating dies under any condition.
I claim .l. A thread cutting apparatus comprising in combination, a drum-shaped stock provided with a plurality of recesses in the n periphery thereof and a fluid chamber, a
die carried by said stock and provided with a fluid conducting port open to the cutting edge thereof :and communicating with the said fluid chamber of said stock, a band surrounding the periphery of said drum,
. movable therewith, and provided with fluid conducting means communicating with its periphery and the said fluid chamber in said stock, a handle structure secured to said band and provided with a cavity adapted to containfluid and in communication with the fluid conducting means of said band, and a ratchet pawl carried by said handle structure and coacting with the said recesses in the periphery of said stock to operate the apparatus.
2. A thread cutting apparatus comprising in combination, a drum-shaped stock provided with a plurality of recesses in the 'periphery thereof and a fluid chamber, a
die carried by said stock and provided with a fluid conducting port open to the cutting edge thereof and communicating with `the said fluid chamber of said stock, a band surrounding the periphery of said drum, movable therewith, and provided with fluid conducting means communicating with its periphery and t-he said fluid `chamber in said stock, a handle structure secured to said band and provided with a cavity adapted to contain Huid and in communication with the fluid conducting means of said band, a ratchet pawl carried by said handle structure and coacting with the said recesses in the periphery of said stock to operate the apparatus, and means for fixing said pawl in one of said recesses to rigidly, connect said handle structure and saidstock.
3. A thread cutting apparatus comprising in combination, a drum-shaped stock provided with a'plurality of recesses in the periphery thereof and a fluid chamber, a
ie carried by said stock and provided with a fluid conducting port open to the cutting edge thereof and communicating with the said fluid chamber of said stock, a band surrounding the periphery of said drum, movable therewith and provided with fluid conducting means communicating with its periphery and the said fluid chamber in `said stock, a handle structure secured to said band and provided with a cavity adapted to contain fluid and in communication with the fluid conducting means of said band, a spring actuated piston within the said cavity for feeding the fluid to said die, and a ratchet pawl carried by said handle structure and coacting with the said recesses in the periphery of said stock to operate the apparatus.

A thread cuttingapparatus comprising in combination, a drum shaped stock provided with a plurality of recesses in the periphery thereof and a fluid chamber, a die carried by said stock and provided with a fluid conducting port open to the cutting edge thereof and communicating with the said fluid chamber of said stock, a band surrounding the periphery Iof said drum, movable therewith, and provided with fluid conducting means communicating with its periphery andthe said fluid chamber in said stock, a handle structure secured to said band and provided with a cavity adapted to contain fluid and in communication with the fluid conducting means of said band, a second handle structure adapted to be disposed diametrically opposite said first mentioned handle structure with respect to said stock, and provided with means for embracing said band and securing said second mentioned handle structure to said first mentioned handle structure, and a ratchet pawl carried by said first mentioned handle and coacting with the said recesses in the periphery of said stock to operate the apparatus.
