Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1 1, 1912.
Original application filed August 19, 1911, Serial No. 644,902. Divided and this application filed November 23, 1911. Serial No. 661,986.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL Dun, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pocatello, in the county of Bannock and State of Idaho, have invented a new and useful Grate, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in grates, and the primary object of this invention is the provision of an adj ustable grate frame, the same being adjustable both longitudinally and transversely whereby the same may be placed within various sized fire boxes of cooking stoves or ranges, this particular application being a divisional application of the application filed August 19, 1911, Serial No. 64%,902.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a frame for supporting preferably hollow cylindrical and perforated grate bars, the connections of the respective sections thereof being so mounted and constructed as to render the frame-adjustable both longitudinally and transversely, the wings supporting the respective side and end walls being provided with means whereby the said portions or wings may be reduced by chiseling to fit any size fire box.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings:Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view through a range and the fire box thereof showing the grate frame in transverse section therein. Fig. 2 is an end view of the complete grate frame. Fig. 8 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 4 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail perspective view of one end of one of the longitudinal side plates of the frame.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a range of the ordinary kitchen or cooking type, provided with the usual fire box flanges 1 providing the fire box opening 2, for the removable reception of the improved grate frame 3. This grate frame is composed of the two oppositely disposed short end flanges 1, provided with the longitudinal grooves 5 upon opposite sides thereof, the purpose of which will presently appear, and with the downwardly projected, spaced and dove tailed in cross sect-ion strips 6. These strips are for the adjustable reception of the cross pieces or journal boxes 7, each of whose sleeves 8 project between the said strips (3 and is held adjustable therebetwcen by means of the adjusting screw 9, these screws being arranged at opposite sides as clearly shown in Fig. 3, to permit the lowering or raising of the journal boxes 7. These journal boxes are provided with apertures or openings 10 for the journaling of the grate bars as set forth in the above mentioned application of which this is a division.
The longitudinal supporting strips or plates 11, are provided with the oppositely disposed longitudinal grooves 12, and with the upstanding rim 13, to form a confining space in the upstanding rim 1 of the end pieces 4, thereby confining the coals in the space formed in the main portion of the fire box.
Each one of the supporting plates 11 is provided at its end with the reduced portion 14 provided with a slot 15, which is adapted to coact with the projecting ends 1' of the flanges 4 and be held in adjusted position by means of the stove bolts 16. By this means the relative sizes of the space between the rims 4: and 18, may be regulated to accommodate the same to any size fire box, the grooves 12 and 15, respectively, providing a means whereby with a cold chisel, the width of the respective flanges or supporting edges may be reduced to correspond with the flanges 1 of the fire box. By this means, the grate may be fitted within any of the various ranges, each having a rectangular fire box and be disposed to displace the ordinary form of grate now employed. The projecting ends 1 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, is provided with the grooved portions 17 and 17 respectively, whereby these ends may be chiseled to reduce the length thereof and to accommodate the grate to small sized fire boxes.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that by providing a grate having a frame made of a series of four members, adjustably connected together, said members each being provided with supporting flanges having the grooved portions, whereby the said flanges may be reduced in size to fit and correspond with the respective grate supporting flanges of the range is produced. This in combination with the particular form of grate bars as set forth in the application of which this is a division, provides an exceedingly simple and durable grate, and one which can be operated to properly agitate the burning coals to sift the products of combustion and at the same time permit the proper ingress of air to produce a complete combustion.
WVhat is claimed as new is A grate frame composed of four members adjustably connected together, the two opposed longitudinal members being T-shaped in cross section with the head of the T forming one wall for the grate frame, the other two members being L-shaped, two spaced lugs depending from each of said last two members, a grate bar carrying cross piece Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
