To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I'IERBERT G. COLLINS, of the city and county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knobs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
This invention relates to knobs or lifts for caps or covers of boxes and similar articles, and consists in the production of a simple and efficient lift which may be made of sheet metal, or similar substance.
To this end, the invention consists of the improvements and combinations of parts set forth and claimed hereinafter.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a cap lift embodying the invention, Fig. 2, a vertical central section of the same, Fig. 3, a bottom View of the same, with the rose omitted, Fig. 4, a perspective view in detail of the shell or head, Fig. 5, a detail top view of the attaching plate and screw, and Fig. 6, a detail side elevation of the screw.
In all figures, similar letters of reference represent like parts.
The parts designated by the letter A represent a hollow parti-circular shell or knob of any suitable design, and B the screw, the shank of which is threaded for insertion in a box or other article.
C designates the attaching plate, and D the rose 0r ornament.
As shown more particularly in Fig. 5, the attaching plate C is provided with a substantially rectangular perforation E at the center for the reception of the corresponding rectangular upper end of the head F of the screw B. Below this head F on the screw is a flange G. This construction may be obtained by drilling the head of an ordinary screw so as to form a rectangular top and leave a circular flange below. By this connection between the plate C and screw B, the screw will turn with the plate. At the ends of the plate C are recesses H for the reception of depending lugs I on the shell A. When the parts are assembled, the lugs I take into the recesses H and are turned down on the under side of the plate 0, as shown more particularly in Figs. 2 and 3, thereby securely binding the plate C and shell A together. The rose D is provided with an axial perforation for the screw B and fits on the screw, as shown more particularly in Fig. 2, below the flange G.
By this construction a very simple and ellicient cap lift is formed. The screw and attaching plate are assembled, and the latter is secured to the shell A, whereupon the cap lift is in condition for use. The cap lift is secured to the desired article by screwing the shank of the screw B into the box or other article until the lower edge X of the rose comes in contact with the box or article. I f a person then places his fingers under the head or shell A and lifts it the plate C will be lifted also because of the engagement of the lugs I on the attaching plate C, and the screw will be lifted, be-
cause when the parts are assembled, the
screw head F is either turned down over the plate C or soldered thereto.
It will be noted that the plate C is preferably of dished form, in order to form, in connection with the rose D, a neck portion for the knob, having its apex slightly below the outer edge or rim of the head, or shell, A. It will also be noted that in the embodiment shown in the drawing, the head of the screw B does not project above the upper line of the plate C, and does not extend through the shell or head A.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patout, isz- 1. In a knob,a platc,a shell or head superposed on said plate, a screw having its head in non-rotative engagement with said plate, and a rose embracing said screw, said plate being dished, and the rose having a con tractcd neck portion below said plate, in order to present a neck for the knob having its apex portion below the outer edge of said shell or head; substantially as described.
2. A knob comprising a screw, a plate of elongated form non-rotatively engaged with the head of said screw and having recesses or notches at its respective ends, and a cap piece or shell having integral depending lugs at its edge portion bent around the ends of said elongated plate in said notches or recesses; substantially as described.
3. A knob comprising a screw, a plate having notches or recesses in its marginal portion, and non-rotatively engaged with the head of said screw, said plate being dished in order to provide a seat for the screw head, a cap piece or shell having depending lugs at its marginal portion engaged with said plate by being bent around the edges of the same within said notches 0r recesses, said shell lying above the head of said screw, and a rose separate from sald plate and embracing the screw below said 10 plate; substantially as described.
