citizen of the United States, residing at St.
Louis, State of Missouri, have invented cer- 5 tain new and useful Improvements in Boiler- Cleaners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof. i
My invention has relation to improvements in boiler-cleaners; and it consists in the novel details of construction more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claims.

The'present invention is an improvement on the soot-blower or boiler-cleaner forming the subject-matter 'of an application filed by myself and Gideon P. Brown, Serial Number 656,743; and while having the same objects in view and contemplating the several 5 advantages of said pending application, the
resent improvement has for its object to interpose between the fiu1d-supply pipe,
header or riser, and the oscillating cleaning nozzle, a hollow joint which shall afford to uniform cross-section irrespective of the fluid a passage-way of a substantially the angle to which thenozzle has been oscil lated from its central position, in either direction.
A further object is to provide a joint which will reduce the 'length of traverse of the fluid (steam) from the riser to the sprayhead or discharge mouth of the nozzle; a
foint which can be easily manipulated, read- 11y attached, and easily cleaned.
The invention consists of further and other features the advantages of which will be readily apparent from a detailed description of the invention which is as follows Referring to the drawings, F represents the furnace (the walls being broken away) of a Well known type of water-tube boiler, S the shell of the boller, and T the water-tubes, the latter being disposed in superposed planes'and in the present illustration being inclined to the horizontal. 'Only a portion of the boiler is here illustrated, said portion being that immediately over the fire-boxF and in front of the bridge-wall B. Disposed along one of the side walls of the furnace opposite the tubes T is an opening O on the order of that of the pending appllcatiori aforesaid, a transversely slotted plate P being set in the brick work across the opening at a point between the opposite faces of the wall as well understood 1n the art, the slots 8 (elliptical in the present illustration) being availed of for the passage therethrough of the oscillating cleaning nozzles as presently to be seen. The top and bottom of the outer portions of the opening 0 are provided with a shoe or casting 1 between which is rigidly mounteda vertical steam pipe, riser or header 2, the riser being tapped at the bottom by a steam-supply pipe 3 receiving its steam from any suitable source but preferably from the steam space of the shell S (theconnectior. not being shown as it iswell understood in the art).
Distributed along the wall of the riser 2 opposite the ,spaces between the tubes T (and beyond the outer tubes if desirable),.
are short pipes 4 projecting toward the plate P, the riser 2 being opposite the longitudinal center or axis of the opening 0.
The-ends of the pipes 4 adjacent the plate P are screwed to the nipple a of the stationary section, member or casing 5 of a steam oint,
which determines the limit to which the nozzle shallbe oscillated from a central position, the nozzle being, arrested when itstrikes said inclined side wall of said mouth.
The member 5 is more or less tapering in form being open at the top and bottom, forming a casing for the reception of the rotatable or rocker-member 5, the bottom of which is provided with a D-shaped stud 6 from the face of which projects a screwstem 7 as shown. The stud 6 is designed to enter a corresponding opening in a washer 8, the latter being held in position by a nut 9 passed over the stem 7, the two sect-ions or members 5, 5 being thus heldv together. The upper face of the member 5' is provided with a hollow boss 10 positioned to one side of the axis of the member, the axis of the socket of theboss being at right angles to the axis of the member (5) and the socket being interiorly screw-threaded for the. purpose of coupling the same thereto to a short lever arm 11 as shown. The outer end of the lever 11 terminates at a point between the member 5' and the riser 2, and to it isv screwed a ball 12 (Fig. 9) which is received by a socket 13 at one end ofthe sectional link 14, the opposite end of the link terminating in a corresponding socket 115 the ball 16 of which has secured to it an arm or lever 17, a series of sucharms being distributed along a vertical rock-shaft or rocker-bar 18 mounted rotatably between the shoes 1, 1, and to one side ofthe riser 2. The bar 18 is provided with'a handle-lever 19 by which it may be manipulated. By seizing the handle and rocking the bar 18, it is obvious that from the connections described, a simultaneous rotation may be imparted to all the members 5' of the series.
The member 5 is provided with a'transverse passage-Way a terminating at one end in a screw-threaded cylindrical enlargement b (Fig. 8) with 'whichit forms a shoulder 20, and at the opposite end in a dish-shaped enlargement or basin 0 the walls of the latter being more or less concaved and forming a 'sort of pocket for directing the steam without friction or material interruption into the passage (1 and into the nozzle 21 which is screwed into the enlargement 6 "against the arresting shoulder 20. a The nozzles pass freely through the slots 8 of the plate P and terminate on" the inside of the furnace opposite the spaces between the tubes in s ray-heads 22. The si es of the openings in the sockets v13, 15', through which the members 11 and 17 respectively project'are of course properly and sufliciently recessed to allow these members and the link 14 toassume the necessary angular relation brought about by the rocking of the bar 18. The present formof steam-joint (5, 5) permits such joint to be brought squarely up to the plate P, thus bringing the axes of oscillation of the nozzles 21. (these axes corresponding to the axes of rotation of the members 5) close to the slots 8 and making it possible to impart a maximum angular sweep or oscillation to the nozzles 21 with a minimum sweep ofthe lever 19 (Fig. 3).
The advantages of the present construction will appear from a description "of'the operation of the invention which is as follows :The central position of the nozzles 21 is that indicated in Fig. 3, where the nozzle passes through the slot 8 at right angles to r the plane of the plate P. By oscillating the lever handle 19 to the right or left and rock ing the bar 18, the nozzles will be correspondinglyoscillated, and the steam being previously turned into the pipe 3, the same I y will flow from the riser 2 into the several nozzles and be projected out of the terminal spray-heads 22 into, through, and across the served by examining said figure (7) that whatever be the angle to whlch the nozzle 21 is oscillated, the position of the enlargement 0 of the passage a of the rocker-member 5' is such as to direct the steam from the pipe 4 and intake nipple a'into thenozzle 21 in practically a direct line from the riser 2 to the nozzle, the steam having no sharp angles or turns to encounter, andsuffering no constriction whatever along the line,'the passageway-accorded thereto being substantially uniform in cross-section at all points between the riser 2 and the sprayhead 22. It is thus seen that the steam is free to flow from the riser into and out of the nozzle with the full boiler pressure behind it, sufi'ering no loss from corners or constrictions. By the old method the steam flowed from a stationary steam-joint section such as B (Fig. 12) around a corner into the rotatable section R, and thereby lost much of its efl'ectiveness by the time it reached the nozzle. During the rocking of;
the member 5, the washer 8 (which is locked to the boss 6 of course rocks with said member, the nut forcing the washer into firm contact with the end of the casing sov as to make a practically tight joint.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination with afluid-conducting pipe, a stationary hollow joint section connected thereto .and communicating therewith, a rotatable section mounted in the stationary section and provided with a passageway opposite to, and in direct continuation of, the inlet to the stationary section, said passage-way terminating in an enlargement on the side facing the inlet to the stationary section, said enlargement being in permanent communication with said inlet.
2. In combination with afiuid-conducting pipe, a stationary hollow joint section connected thereto and communicating therewith, a rotatable section mounted in the stationary section and provided with a transverse passage-way oppositeto, and in direct continuation of, the inlet to the stationary section, said passage-way terminating in an enlargement on the side facing the inlet tothe stationary section, 'said'enlargement being in permanent communication with said inlet, and a nozzle leading from said transverse passage-way of the rotatable section through the wall of the stationary section.
3. In combination with a fluid-conducting pipe, a stationary hollow joint section connected thereto and communicating therewith, a rotatable section mounted in the stationary section and provided with a transverse passage-way opposite to, and in directcontinuation 'of, the inlet to the stationary section, said passage-way terminating in a basin or dish-shaped enlargement on the side facing the inlet to the stationary section, said basin bein in permanent communication with sai inlet, and a nozzle leading from said transverse passage-way of the rotatable section through the wall of the stationary section.
4. In an apparatus of the character described, a joint comprising an outer hollow section or casing provided with a peripheral intake and an outlet opening opposite thereto, a rotatablemember in said casing provlded with a transverse passage-way between said intake and outlet opening, said transverse passage-way terminating in an enlargedbasin on the intake side of the casing in full and permanent communication with the said intake, a nozzle leading from the discharge end of said transverse passage-way and operating through the outlet opening of the casing, the bounding walls of said outlet opening arresting the rotation of the rotatable member by engaging the nozzle when the latter has been oscillated to one of its extreme positions.

In combination with a fluid-conducting pipe or header, an oscillating nozzle, and a hollow-joint interposed between said nozzle and header and provided with passage-Ways opposite the nozzle according a flow to the stream from the header across the joint ina substantially direct line to the nozzle.
7. In an apparatus of the character described, a joint comprising anouterhollow section or casing provided with a peripheral intake, and an outlet opening opposite thereto, a rotatable member in said casing provided with a transverse passage-way between said intake and outlet opening, said transverse passage-way terminating in an enlarged basin on the intake side of the casing in full and permanent communication with said intake, and a nozzle leading from the discharge end of said transverse passageway and operating through the outlet opening of the casin 8. In an apparatus of the character described, a joint comprising a casing having a peripheral intake, and an outlet opening opposite thereto, an inner rocker member rotatable about an axis disposed at an angle, to the common axis of the intake and outlet openings of the casing, said rocker member being provided with a transverse passage the axis of which is disposed in the plane of the common axis of the intake and outlet openlngs of the casing, said passage terminating in an enlargement in permanent communication with the intake to the casing, and
discharging through the outlet from the casing.
9.
