FIREPROOF WINDOW.
1,( )25,995 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May .14, 1912,
' Application filed February 24, 1909. Serial No. 479,709.
To all win n it may concern: jecting inwardly along the exterior side of Be it known that I. SILAS ll. Pmtenor, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New Rochelle,- county of \i'estchester, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireproof lVindows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvementsin fireproof windows, and refers more particustrip and cooperative parts in a sheet metal window frame.
The salient objects of the invention are to provide a parting strip of that type which interfits with a sash arranged at either side thereof and which is made adjustable in the direction of the plane of the window, thereby securing as nearly perfect freedom of movement as is consistent with close fitting joints; to provide in such a. construction. means for adjusting the stop at various justing means for the purpose set forth. which result in locking the stop positively in -whatever position of adjustment it is placed; to provide a construction which may be very economically made and assembled; and in general to provide an improved construction of the character referred to.
In the drawings--Figure l is a fragmem tary pers ective iew of a portion of the side frame of the windmv and fragments of sash adjusted therein said window being equipped with in. improvement; Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on line 2-2 of l ig. 1 and looking dmvnwardly; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional detail taken through the plane coincident with one of the adjustmg screws; Pig. is a view taken on line 5 is an outside face view oi. a fragment of the adjustable side stop.
Referring to the drawings, l, designates as a whole a hollow sheet metal window frame, within which are arranged to slide in the usual manner upper and lower sash members 3 and 4, respectively. The end rails in the window franie'are not concerned in the present invention, and are not shown. Each hollow side frame member 2 is so constructed in cross section as to provide the usual fixed and integral jamb member 5pmthe frame, while in a correspondingposition along its inner edge is arrangedgan adjustable stop 6, more particularly described hereinafter. The trough-like space between the two stops 5 and 6 is subdivided, as usual, by a partingstrip 9. which latter,
, and its meansof adjustment, constitute the present invention. The two channels thus formed, and designated 7 and 7, respectively, receive the upper and lower sashes of the window. as shown. The parting strip fl-is preferably of T-shape in cross section,
, having its central or main body arranged to fit closely within a counter-channel 8 formed between the sash channels 7 and 7. The head portion of said stop is provided with lateral flanges 10. 10, which flanges, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, cxtcnd within and engage corresponding grooves. as 24, formed in the side stiles of the respective sash.
In order that the parting strip 9 may be made bodily adjustable in the direction of the depth of the counter-groove 8, and adjusted at various points throughout the .length of the strip, adjusting means are provided, which are preferably constructed as follows /Nithin the outer or head portion of the panting strip is arranged a strap-like metal reinforcement 11,which maybe riveted in place, as indicated at 11. 'lhrough this reinforcing strip 11 and the overlying wall of the stop are formed at intervals apart suitable screw apertures adapted to receive screws 12, and in order that said screws may have swiveling, connection with the head portion of the stop, a cotter-pin or key 21 is inserted through the shank of each screw just inside of the reinforcement 11, after the screw has bccnproperly inserted, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. These several groo es 15'; at their threaded inner ends engage with what l term stations which are essentially studs or blocks 18. These lilcchs fit into socket. members 14" of U-shaped cross-section, whose ends are do fiected inwardly to engage in the grooves 14 provided in the sides of the blocks. To anchor the socket members in the counter grooves tongues L; have their outer ends deflected to engage in the grooves -14 and have their inner ends extending through slots 15 at the inner corners of the grooves and are deflected over against theouter nihim 8 in the Simiiwt 1i members. a
