Be it known that I, AUGUST Mmrz, a citizen of the German Empire, and resident of Charlottensburg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lubricators, especially for locomotives, in which in consequence of the vibration caused by the working of the machine, the oil is conducted automatically to the oil-outlet, and thus into the conduit which conveys it to the place where it is to be used, while, when the engine is stationary, the oil-supply automatically ceases. The out-flow of the oil is controlled by means of a member surrounding the oil-supply tube in the interior of the lubricating-vessel, which member is oscillatingly suspended on a spring. The spring is preferably a coil spring surrounding the member and fastened to the lid of the lubricating-vessel, or in any other suitable manner.
Several illustrative embodiments of the invention are represented by way of example in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a cross-section of a lubrieating-vessel with a member adapted alternately to open and close the inlet of the supply tube of the oil-vessel, the inlet being controlled by a regulating piston; Fig. 2 is a cross-section showing parts of the same lubricating-vessel, having a modified form of the regulating-piston; Fig. 3 is a crosssection of a lubricating-vessel according to Figs. 1 and 2, a collar being provided in the lower part of the member adapted alternately to open and close the inlet of the supply-tube; Fig. 4 is a cross-section of a lubricating-vessel according to Fig. 3, the spring pressing down the collar being ar ranged in a different manner.
In all forms shown in the figures, in which like parts are designated by like reference characters, the oil enters into the supply-tube in the lower part of this tube, a slide being provided which when the engine is working, in consequence of the shaking of the engine or of the particular part of the machinery on which the lubricator is arranged, swings up and down and, accordingly alternately opens and closes the inlet of the supply-tube and when it is at rest keeps this opening permanently closed.
According to Fig. 1 there is arranged around the outflow or supply pipe 0 the member 5, which in this case is a slide which closes the inlet 0 in. the lower part of the supply-tube, and which during the working of the engine alternately opens and closes it. The said member is suspended on a spiral spring d which hangs on the rotatable slide 9 of the opening on the under side of the lid 7). By turning the head a, with which the slide is connected, the latter can be adjusted. At thebottom of the vessel is arranged a ring Z of an elastic material. In the in terior of the tube through which the oil flows out is arranged the piston i, which can be adjusted from the outside by means of the head 6. At the head a of the pistonspindle are providedholes 0 one at the front, the other at the back of head 6 the position of which in relation to the upper rim of the head 7?. indicates the width of the outlet 0, and thus the quantity of the oil passing out.
In the construction shown in Fig. 2 there is arranged a piston i with a triangular aperture in its head 6 having the same purpose as the holes 0 in Fig. 1 and a triangular aperture -s through which the oil can pass out, underneath the outlet in the tube through which the oil flows out. In order to give to the oil free access to the aperture 8 in the piston 2' the bore of the supplytube for the oil is widened above the piston through which the oil passes. The spindle 7c of the piston carries above the opening through which the oil passes a ring 1, the purpose of which is tov prevent too much oil collecting above the piston, so that the oil will cease to flow after the engine has been stopped. The construction of the regulating-device may be modified.
In the construction shown in Fig. 8 there is arranged a collar to around the tube through which the oil flows out, the upper end of which collar carries the ring it. The upper part of the collar w is surrounded by a member I) suspended to oscillate from the lid. In a recess '1; of the member I) is arranged the spring 25 which rests with its upper end against the slide of the lid of the oil-reservoir and its lower end against the rim u of the collar w, and keeps the opening 0 closed when the engine is at rest. The member I) has in its lower part a lifting-ring b screwed into it. During the oscillations of themember b when the engine is working, the ring 6 of the member strikes from below against the ring u of the collar w and drives it forward. The member I) with the ring is formed in such manner that a space is formed such that the member 6 with its ring 12 can freely oscillate a certain distance before the collar w is driven.
In the construction shown in Fig. 4: the spring rests with its upper end against a rim of the member Z2.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent 1. In an automatic lubricating-device, the combination with an oil-reservoir, of an oil supply tube in the interior of the oil-reservoir having an opening in its lower part, a lid for the oil-reservoir, means for controlling said opening arranged around the tube, and a spring carrying said means.
2. In an automatic lubricating-device, the combination with an oil-reservoir, of an oilsupply tube in the interior of the oil-reservoir having an opening in its lower part, a
lid for the oil-reservoir, a spring suspended. r
from the lid, a member arranged around the tube carried by the spring, the lower part of the member having a collar surrounding the outflow-tube for alternately opening and closing the opening in the lower part of the tube substantially as set forth.
3. In an automatic lubricating-device, the combination with an oil reservoir, of an oil supply tube in the interior of the oil-reservoir having an opening in its lower part, a lid for the oil-reservoir, a spring suspended from the lid, a member arranged around the tube carried by the spring, the lower part of said member having a collar surrounding the tube for alternately opening and closing the opening in the lower part of the tube, and a spring in the interior of the said member pressing on the said collar, substantially as set forth.
