MILL FOR SI-IREDDING ALFALFA.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUFUS F. PACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Vale, in the county o-f Chautauqua and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mills for Shredding Alfalfa; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to mills specially intended for use in shredding or grinding alfalfa; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section through the mill as constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken on the line x-m in Fig` 1.
A is a casing, and B is a cylinder, similar to those used in threshing machines. This cylinder is mounted on a shaft C which is journaled in the casing, and provided with a belt pulley c for revolving it at any desired speed. The cylinder B is provided with radially projecting teeth at its periphery, arranged in rows and at suitable distances apart.
D is the upper concave provided with teeth CZ, and secured in the casing directly over the axis of the cylinder.
E is the lower concave provided with teeth c, and secured in the casing directly below the aXis of the cylinder. The teeth of the cylinder are intercurrent with those of t-he concaves, and all the teeth are spike teeth of approved form such as have become standard in the manufacture of threshing machines.
F is an inclined feed table secured to the casing at its inlet f, which is arranged to one side of the upper concave. The curved arrow in Fig. l shows the direction of the revolution of t-he cylinder.
G is a curved screen of woven wire, of preferably one-quarter inch mesh, secured between the concaves D and E, and arranged substantially concentric with the cylinder. I-I is a similar curved screen of woven wire secured between the concave E and the feed table.

The casing is provided with suitable conveyers I in its lower part for removing the shredded material.
The alfalfa is fed by hand through the feed opening, or feeding mechanism of any approved construction may be arranged at this point, if desired. The alfalfa is shredded in its passage between the cylinder and the upper concave, and the shredded material is ground against and rubbed through the wire screen G. The woven wire screen and the teeth of the cylinder have a peculiar reducing or grinding action upon the shredded alfalfa. Any alfalfa which will not pass through the screen G is again shredded in its passage between the cylinder and the lower concave, and is rubbed through the wire screen H. Any material not rubbed through the screen I-I is carried past the inlet chute f and is again rethreshed by the concave D.
Each concave preferably consists of three concave bars, and each concave bar is preferably provided with two rows of teeth.
What I claim is:
l. An alfalfa mill, comprising a casing provided with a feed chute, a toothed cylinder journaled in the casing, and toothed concaves and woven wire screens arranged alternately around the said cylinder and wholly encircling it except at the feed chute, the teeth of t-he said cylinder and concaves being intercurrent spikes.
2. An alfalfa mill, comprising a casing vprovided with a feed chute, a toothed cvlinder journaled in the casing, and toothed concaves and woven wire screens arranged alternately around the said cylinder and wholly encircling it except at the feed chute, the teeth of the said cylinder and concaves being intercurrent spikes, one concave being arranged over the axis of the cylinder close behind the feed chute and the other concave being arranged at a point diametrically opposite to the upper concave.
