My invention relates to railway ties and fasteners therefor, and my purpose is .to provide a cross tie for railways, which 1s light in weight, easily formed and placed in posi.
tion and on which a rail may be fastened at any desired place in the longitudinal length of said tie, especially to be used at switches where more than two rails are laid and where various distances are required be tween rails. Thesev objects l accomplish with the device illustrated in the acompanying drawings in which. similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures.

My tie is cut from a sheet of corrugated metal and bent to form an 1rip-turned channel l. At the places where the rails are expected to rest the said channel is strengthened by having the reinforcing members 20 secured within the said channel by bolts 2 in the holes 2'; if a tie is to be used at a place in the road where a switch is needed and more than two rails rest on the tie, more than two reinforcements are used and they are placed where the rails cross said chan nel. Each reinforcing member 2O consists of a sheet of metal bent to the form of the inside of the said channel, and with the cen-y tral portion thereof crimped upward forming an inverted U-shaped groove 3. Near one end of said groove 3 is cut a transverse elongatedslot 4. The horizontal portion, or top, of said groove 3 is extended at one end and is bent vertically upward t-o form the lock piece 5. Said lock piece 5 has an elongated opening 6 therein. Portions of the sides of said reinforcing members 20 are bent down vover the edges of said channel 1, as shown at 7, to form a lock for the Sides of said channel 1 to prevent the said sides from being pushed outward. Another portion of each of said sides of said reinforcing member 20 is not so bent, but is extended upwardly' to form shoulders 8. Within each of said reinforcing. members 20 is placed a cushion block 9 made of fibrous material to supply the needed cushion effect desired under the rails which rest on said blocks. At one end of said blocks 9 is placed 'a clamp 10 having an elongated opening 15" therein. A portion 18 of each of said clamps is eX- tended to engage the said shoulders 8 and is also bent to engage the base iange of the rail. On the opposite edge of two of said clamps 10a lug 11 is integrally formed Ato fit within said transverse slot 4 in the groove 3. Also within the said slot 4 is litted a locking member 12 having one edge 19 bent at an angle to engage the under-side of said groove 3. The main portion of said locking member 12 is placed in sliding contact with one of thesaid clamps 10 and each has an elongated opening 14 therein, the sides of which register with the sides ofl the similar openings 15 in the said clamps 10. Within said openings 6, 14, 15 and 15 and horizontally through each of the said blocks 9, are fitted two U-shaped wedge washers 16, .co-acting when drawn toward each other within said .clamps 10 and locking members A 12 on one end, and lock piece 5 and the other clamp 10 on the other end, to make the said openings more nearly register.
The corrugations in'the sides and bottom of the said channel 1 prevent any lateral movement of the tie on the road bed when ballasted. Where only two rails are to rest on the tie, the said reinforcing members 20, may be riveted irmly in place, and where the switch rails are to be placed, detachable fastenings are used. The shoulders 8 engage the extended part 18 of said clamps as they grip thel base iange of the rails, to prevent outward spreading and :lateral dis.- placementof the clamps. VViththe reinforcing members 20 in place within the channel 1, the cushion blocks' 9 are then placed within the said reinforcing members 20, one under each rail, with the upper side of said block above the said portion 7- of said reinforcing members 20, which will prevent the rails from contacting with'the metal of the reinforcing members 2O or the channel 1. The locking members 12 are placed within the said transverse slots 4, with the angle part 19 engaging the under sides of the groove 3 of the said reinforcing members 20. and the clamps 10 for that side of the rail are then placed between the said blocks and said locking members 12 with the lug l1 also Within the transverse slot 4 which locks the members 12in place, the openin,f ,'fs` (3 and 15 partially registering. The U-shaped wedge washers 16 are then inserted, one from eachside, through the said openings t3, 15', 14 andvl, with their angled sides contacting, and with the bolts 17 therethrough the nut thereon binds the said lock piece 5, locking member 12, clamps 10, 10 and -cushion blocks 9 together, and as will be readily observed any tightening of the nut on the bolt will draw the said clamps downward and inward and rmly grip the base flange of the rail. If other rails are needed as at a switch, other reinforcing members and co-acting elements are secured within the channel Having thus described my invention l desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1. A railway tie and fastener consisting of a corrugated open top channel, having closed sides and bottom; detachable reinforcing members carried in said channel each provided with an inverted U-shaped groove extending longitudinally therein and having a transverse slot near the end of said lgroove; a portion ofthe sides of said reinforcing members being bent downward to hook over the sides of said channel: up standing portions forming shoulders on said reinforcingl members adjacent said bent down portions; a lock piece formed by the top of said U-shaped groove being extended and bentupwardly at right angles and having an elongated hole therein; clamps adapted to engage the base Harige of a rail; detachable locking members cach ,having an elongated hole therein, and a portion bcnt at right angles and adapted to tit snugly Within said transverse slots and to engage With the underside of the said groove in reinforcing members in said channel.l

A railway tic and fastener consisting of a corrugated, open top channel, said channel having closed sides and bottom; de tachable reinforcing members carried therein, a portion of the sides of cach of said reinforcing membersbeing bent downward to hook over the sides of said channel another portion provided with an inverted U-shaped groove extending longitudil'ially7 therein-and having a transverse slot in the top and near the end of said groove; fibrous rail supporting blocks; alock piece (formed by the top of said U-shaped groove being extended and bent vertically upward and havingr an elongated hole therein; clamps bent to engage the base Hange of a rail,A each having au elongated hole therein, said holes partially registering with the holes in said lock piece; detachable locking members each having an elongated hole therein and having a ortion bent at right angles, and adapted to fit snugly within said transverseslots, and to engage the under side ofsaid grooves; kU- shaped wedge washers, adapted to t snugly w-ithin the elongated holes wit-hin said bentup lock pieces, said clamps and said detachable loc-king members; a bolt having a nut thereon adapted to fit within said U-shaped wedge washers, with the head of said bolt engaging with the larger end of one of said washers, and the nut on said bolt cngaging with the larger end of the other of sai washers, and adapted to :torce said washers along each other, and thereby cause the partially registering elongated holes in said lock piece, locking member, and said clamps to more nearly register. and thereby bind the said clamps against the base flange of the rail.
3. A railway tie and fastener of an open topped channel; reinforcing members detachably fastened therein; provided with an inverted U-shaped groove longitudinally formed in each with a transverse slot in said groove; locking members each having a portion thereof bent to engage the underside of said U-shaped grooves` and fitted within said transverse slots; clamps having one edge bent to grip the base flange of a rail; a lug on the lower side of said clamps adapted when in said transverse slots to prevent the withdrawal of the said locking members from said slots; cushion consisting blocks fitted between said clamps, and eachhaving a horizont-al opening therethrough; U-shaped wedgel washers, slidably movable on each other, and Within the elongated openings in said locking members and said clamps; and means to drive said wedges in longitudinally opposed directions, said means consisting of a bolt, with va threaded nut thereon adapted to drive one of said Washers in one direction, and the other simultaneously in the opposite direction.

A railway tie and fastener consisting,r of an open topped channel; reinforcing members detacllahly fastened therein provided with an inverted U-shapcd groove longitudinally formed therein with transverse slots in said grooves; a lock piece integrally formed on the end of each of said reinforcing members and having an clongated opening thcrcin; clampsl having onc edge bent to engage the basc flange of a rail, and an elongated opening in cach; cushion blocks fitted between said clamps` and having a horizontal opening therethrough; U-
shaped wedge washers slidably movable on each other, and within said elongated openings in said lock pieces and said clamps; and a bolt with a threaded nut thereon adapted to drive one of said washers in one direction, and the other simultaneously in the opposite direction.
5. A railway tie and fastener consisting of an open channel; reinforcing members detachably fastened therein, having an inverted u-shaped longitudinally formed groove with a transverse slot in the top and near one end thereof; a lock piece formed by the top of said U-shaped groove, being eX- tended and bent upwardly at right angles, and having an elongated hole therein, locking members each having a portion thereof bent to engage the under side of said U- shaped grooves and to lit within said transverse slots; clamps.. bent to engage thebase flange of a rail each having an elongated hole therein, said holes partially registering 4with the holes in said lock pieces; other ,clamps bent to engage the base flange of a rail, and having similar holes'therein, partially registering with the holes in said locking member; fibrous rail supporting blocks having a horizontal opening through each, fitted between said clamps; U-shaped Wedge washers slidably lmovable on each other, and within said elongated openings in said lock pieces, locking members, and clamps; and means to drive said wedges inA longitudinally opposed directions.
6. A railway tie and fastener consisting of a channel having an open top; reinforcing members' detachably fastened therein and provided with an inverted U-shaped groove extendingllongitudinaly in each with a transverse slot in said groove, a portion of the sides of said reinforcing members being bent downover the sides of said channel; upsta'nding portions of the sides of said reinforcing members adapted to form shoulders thereon adjacent said bent down por-V tions; fibrous rail supporting blocks in said reinforcing members; a lock piece integrally formed on an extended portion of each of saidl reinforcing members, each of said lock pieces having an elongated opening therein; a lodking member having a portion thereof bent to engage the under side of one of saidgage the base flange of a rail, each provided` with an elongated perforation, partially registering with the perforation in said lccking member when said clamp and said locking member are adjacent; U-shaped wedge Washers within said elongated perforations; and a bolt wit-h a nut thereon adapted to drive one of said washers in one direction, and the other simultaneously in the opposite direction andrthereby to draw said clamps toward the rail and'downward.
