To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLARD A. SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Presses, ofwhich the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
This invention relates to printing presses, and particularly to devices of this class adapted to be operated by hand and employing rubber type; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of the class described which is simple in construction, efficient in operation, and which accomplishesthe operation of inking the type and printing by a single backward and forward movement of a hand lever.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a right hand side view of my improved printing device and showing the parts in the position for printing; Fig. 2 a rear view showing the parts in the same position; Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. l, but showing the parts in the position they occupy just before the inking operation and with part of the frame broken away; Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing the parts in the inking position, and; Fig. 5 a partial section on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I provide a main frame comprising a base a and upright side plates (1 in the top of which is mounted a rock-shaft b to the right side end of which is secured a hand lever 6 Mounted in the bottom front portion of the main frame and centrally thereof is a type box 0 having central side pins 0 movable in vertical guide slots 0 in the side plates a of the frame, and below the guide slots 0 and on the outer side of the side plates 6& are stop pins 0 which support arms 0 pivoted at 0 and extending backwardly and to the rear ends of which are pivoted, as shown at 0 links 0 the free Specification of Letters Patent.

ends of which are provided with longitudinal slots 0 and secured to the outer end portions of the shaft 6 are cranks d having pins 6Z2 movable in the slots 0 said cranks cl being also provided with heads or collars d through which the shaft 6 passes, and said heads or collars being provided with set screws d whereby they are secured to said shaft.
In practice, the type c are set in the box 0 in the usual manner, and mounted above the box 0 is a vertically movable platen f provided at its opposite ends with guide pins f movable in vertical slots f formed in the side plates a of the frame, and pivoted to the top of said platen at f is a link f which is pivoted at f to a crank f having a head through which the shaft 7) passes and which is secured to said shaft by a set screw f as shown in Fig. 2.
The side plates at of the main frame are also provided over the type box 0 with horizontal guide grooves g in which is mounted a forwardly and backwardly movable inking pad frame it in the bottom of which is an inking pad 72 said frame being also provided with side ribs h movable in the grooves g, and as will be seen, the body of the platen f is less in length than the distance between the side plates a of the frame to permit of the operation of arms 2' which are loosely mounted on the shaft 6 at 5 adjacent to the inner sides of the side plates a of the frame, and which extend downwardly and the ends of which are movable in oblong recesses 2' in the ends of the inking pad frame It as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.
Secured to the shaft Z) inwardly of the arms a are collars j having parallel fingers j which extend in the same direction as the arms 2' and which are provided with outwardly directed supplemental fingers 7' and j between which the arms 1' pass, and between the supplemental fingers 7' and the arms 2' are placed spiral springs 3' The base a of the main frame is provided with a guide lug 70 against which one side of the type box bears in order to hold said box true in its vertical movement as hereinafter described, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement thereof.
The normal position of the parts when the device is not in use may be considered as that shown in Fig. 3, and in this position of the parts, the springs j are expanded and the crank pins (Z are in the upper end portions of the slots 0 in the links 0 If now, it-be desired to throw the machine into operation, the lever b is moved backwardly in the direction of the arrow as into the position shown in Fig. 4, which operation results in raising the type box and pressing the type against the inking pad h" as shown in said figure, and in this position of the parts the springs j are compressed. The lever Z2 is then moved back in the direction of the arrow m which movement allows the springs 7' to expand, while the arm 2' remains in the position shown in said figure.
During the movement just described, the crank arm 03 allows the link a to drop, and the type box 0 to be lowered into its normal position as shown in Fig. 1. Before the inking pad frame is operated upon by the armz' to return it to its normal inoperative position as shown in Fig. 1, a further throw of the lever Z2 in-the direction of the arrow .22 will'cause the platen f to descend, but before reaching the limit of its downward movement, a piece of cardboard or paper at is inserted into horizontal recesses 12 formed in the side plates a and over the type c, and a still further operation of the lever 12 in the direction of the arrow 00 will cause the platen f to contact with said cardboard or paper at and cause the type c to make an impression thereon.
The object of making the recesses 2' in the ends of the inking pad frame 72. greater than the transverse dimensions of the lower ends of the arms 2' is to properly time the movements of the inking pad frame it and the platen 7 so that there will be no interference.
Assuming the parts to be in the position shown in Fig. 1 and the lever b to be thrown in the direction of the arrow 00, the lower end of the arms 2' will have a dead movement through the recesses 2' while the crank f is raising the platen f, and this movement will be sufficient to allow the inking pad frame it to slide under the platen f as it is drawn forwardly by the arms 2', as will be readily understood, and this operation may be repeated as often as desired.
Although I have described my invention as particularly adapted for use in connection with rubber type, it will be understood that any form or style of type, or type of any material may be employed, and although I have described the parts 7' as fingers and the-parts j as supplemental fingers connected therewith, it will be understood that these parts, together with the head. j of the iingers j form a yoke-shaped attachment for the shaft 7) having the supplemental fingers j and said attachment may be formed in any desired manner; and various other changes in and modifications of the con struction described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention, or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a printing press of the class de scribed, a frame, a vertically movable type box or holder mounted in the bottom portion thereof, a vertically movable platen mounted over said type box or holder, a horizontally movable inking pad device mounted over said type box or holder, and means for moving said inking pad device into position between the type box or holder and the platen and for raising said type box or holder and for moving the inking pad device backwardly from between the type box or holder and the platen, comprising a shaft mounted in the top of the frame and having a crank and a link pivoted thereto and to the platen, another crank connected with said shaft and in operative connection with means for raising the type box or holder, and arms loosely mounted on said shaft and the free ends of which are movable in recesses in the end portions of the inking pad device, the operation of said arms being controlled by tension devices supported in yoke-shaped devices secured to said shaft and having fingers between which said arms pass.
2. In a printing press of the class described, a frame, a vertically movable type box or holder mounted in the bottom portion thereof, a vertically movable platen mounted above the type box or holder, a horizontally movable inking pad device, a shaft mounted in the top of the frame and in operative connection with the platen and with the type box or holder, and arms loosely mounted on said shaft and the free ends of which operate in recesses in the ends of the inking pad device, said shaft being also provided with yoke-shaped devices having fingers between which the arms pass, and springs placed between one set of said fingers and the said arms.
3. In a printing press of the class described, a frame, a vertically movable type box or holder mounted in the bottom portion thereof, a vertically movable platen mounted above the type box or holder, a horizontally movable inking pad device, a shaft mounted in the top of the frame, devices in operative connection with said shaft and said type boX or holder for operating my invention I have signed my name in the latter, devices in operative connection presence of the subscribing Witnesses this with said shaft and the platen for operating th day of November 1911.
