AGETYLCENE-GAS GENERATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1912.
Application filed January 19, 1912. Serial No. 672,110.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES S. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Le Roy, in the county of Coifey and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful AcetyleneGas Generator, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to acetylene gas generators.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a carbid feeding mechanism which will be positively operated by the rise and fall of the gas dome.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, showing the feed mechanism in detail. Fig, 3 is a section on the line 3-3 Fig. 1.
In the drawings 10 designates a stationary tank the open end of which is provided with the inwardly extending annular flange 11 which embraces a floating gas bell or dome 12. This bell or dome is disposed to move vertically within the tank, its upper portion projecting beyond the tank. Disposed vertically within the tank are a plurality of legs or standards 14c supported by the bottom 15. These standards support a carbid hopper 16 the sloping bottom wall 17 of which terminates in the opening 18. This opening is normally closed by the plate 19 and is supported by the depending hanger 20 which is secured to the hopper. A lug 21 is secured to the sloping wall of said hopper adjacent said opening and pivotally supported by said lug is an arm 22. This arm 22 is formed with an extension 24 which is connected to the plate 19 by the link 25, the movement of the arm shifting the plate, to allow the opening 26 in said plate to register with the opening in the hopper. The extension 27 of the arm 22 is dis oosed parallel with the wall of the floating ome, said extension being provided with a roller 27 which engages said wall as the dome moves vertically within the tank. The rib 28 with which the roller 27 contacts is formed with a recess 29 which when the gas dome falls as shown in Fig. 1, receives the roller 27, the downward movement of the dome forcing the plate 20 to the position shown in Fig. 1, bringing the opening in the plate 20 in register with the opening in the carbid hopper permitting the carbid to fall within the tank 10. It will be noted that this feeding of the carbid will be continued until sufficient gas is generated to raise the dome 12. As soon as the gas raises the dome 12 the arm 27 will leave the opening 29 in the rib 28, the same contacting with said rib to withdraw the plate to the position shown in Fig 2 thus bringing the openings in the plate and hopper out of register.
By this construction it wlll be noted the supply of carbid may be accurately regulated by the gas produced and the gas pressure maintained. The carbid hopper 16 is provided at either side with brackets 30 which support rollers 31. These rollers contact with the vertically disposed rails 32 supported interiorly of the floating dome, the dome thus being supported in its vertical movement.
The tank 10 supports the gas outlet pipe 83, the nozzle 34: of which may be provided with a sponge 35.
The many advantages of a construction of this character will be clearly apparent as it will be noted that the descent of the floating dome will positively assure a deposit of carbid, the flow of carbid continuing until sufficient gas is generated to raise the dome.
What is claimed is A gas generator comprising a tank, a carbid hopper supported by said tank, said hopper having its lower portion disposed within the tank, a dome, said dome embracing said hopper and extending within said tank, brackets disposed on either side of said hopper, rollers supported by said brackets, track members disposed interiorly of said dome, said rollers embracing said track members, a sliding closure for said hopper, an arm pivotally supported by said hopper, said arm being formed with an olfset having a link connection wit-h said sliding closure, said arm being formed with a curved extension, a roller supported by said curved extension, a rib disposed interiorly of said dome, said rib being formed with an obliquely disposed slot to receive said roller, the contact of said rib with said roller im parting movement to said arm to operate said closure.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signa ture in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES S. JOHNSON.
