SOLE-EDGE TRIMMING AND FINISHING TOOL.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, Azv'roxio D. FRAS- .COLA, a citizen of the United States, residing at El Reno, in the county of Canadian and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sole-Edge Trimming and Finishing Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to'the accompanying drawings. 10
This invention is an improved sole edge trimming and finishing tool of the class in which there is a revolving cutter, the knives of which are arranged to extend from a rand guide in such manner as to cut the lower edge of the sole,-and a burnishing sleeve having burnishing fingers extending between the knives of the revolving cutter or trimmer, the object of the invention being to provide an improved tool of this character in which the burnishing sleeve is mounted on the shaft for movement toward and from the rand guide so as to adapt the tool to be used on shoe soles of varying thicknesses, and to provide the burnishing sleeve with improved means for locking the same to the arbor at any desired adjustment.
The invention consistsin the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

The shaft on which the; edge trimming tool is mounted is indicated at 1. This shaft is, in practice, mounted in suitable bearings and revolved by suitable means and usually constitutes a portion of a trimming and burnishing machine. In accordance w1th my invention "the shaft is providedin one side with a longitudinal channel 2, on opposite sides of whichare series of rack teeth 3. ()n the reduced end 1 of the shaft is mounted the revolving sole trimming cutte' 5, which is rcvol\'ed'by the shaft and comprises the -usual hub t3 and the usual cutter teeth 7 which are provided witlrcutting edges 8. struction and is secured on the outer end of the shaft by a screw 10. This rand guide enters the crease between the sole and the upper to guide the cutter or trimmer.
The edge burnishing sleeve 11 is mounted on the shaft 1 for longitudinal movement and provided with the butter teeth 12 which enter the spaces between the teeth of the cutter or trimmer. This sleeve is provided on one end'with an annular flange 13. and the said flange is provided, in its outer sitle. with a short slot 14, the axis of which 7 s at right angles to that of the shaft.
In accordance with my invention I also provide a locking and adjusting collar 15. which is fitted and longitudinally movable and also partly revoluble on the shaft 1. This locking and adjusting collar is'provided at one end with-an annular recess 16 for the reception of the flange 13' of the burnishing sleeve, and the said locking and adj usting collar is connected to the hufnislr ing lQL\'L by a set screw 17. the, inner end of which engages the slot 14. Ilence. the locking and adjusting collar is connected to the burnishing sleeve for longitudinal movement therewith and is also adapted to be turned to some extent independently of the burnishing sleeve. The locking and adjusting collar'is provided. at one side of its longitudinally of the shaft in order to adjust the burnishing sleeve toward and from the rand guide or shield so as to vary the effective cutting length ot the teeth of the trimmer or cutter. as may be required, according to the thickness of the sole on which the tool is to operate, and when the burnishing sleeve has been thus adjusted the collar is then turned laterally so as to cause theteeth 18 to engage certain of the teeth 3 of the shaft on one side or the other of the the shatt'and' the tool is revolved. That is to say, it the tool is so constructed that it revolves to the left when in operation, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1 of the (lltlVl'lIlgS, the locking and adjusting collar must be turned to the right, and it will be understood that the revoluble motion of the tool will keep the locking and adjusting collar locked in place.

- that in order to adjust the burnisher toward those of the shaft, then move said collar longitudinally the required distance and same so as to reengage its locking teeth with certain of the locking teeth of the shaft. Such adjustment can be eflected almost instantaneously, and does not require the loosening or tightenin of any adjusting screws or other-similar devices.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. The combination with the shaft, rand guide and-sole trimmer of a sole edge trimming and finishing tool, an edge burnishing sleeve mounted for longitudinal movement on the shaft toward and from the rand guide and having buffer teeth in the spaces between the teeth of the trimmer, a locking and adjusting collar mounted for longitudinal movement on the shaft, the burnishing sleeve being formed with a transversely extending slot, and a ,set screw extending through the collar and received in said slot, whereby the collar is connected to the burnisher for longitudinal movement therewith and also having partial rotation inde pendently thereof, the shaft being provided with a longitudinal-channel and with loeking teeth opening into the channeland the collar being provided with a locking tooth adapted for longitudinal movement in said channel and to be engaged with the locking teeth of the shaft, for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the shaft, rand guide and sole trimmer of a sole edge trimming and finishing tool, an edge burnishing' sleeve mounted for longitudinal movement on the shaft toward and from the rand guide and having buffer teeth in the spaces bet-ween the teeth of the trimmer, and a locking and adjusting: collar mounted for longitudinal movement on, the shaft and connected to the burnisher for longitudinal movement therewith and also for partial rotation independently thereof, the said shaft being provided with a longitudinal channel and with locking teeth opening into the channel and the said collar being provided with looking teeth adapted for longitudinal movement in said channel and to he also engaged with locking teeth of the shaft when said collar is partly revolved in one direction.
