.UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
' WARREN w. WARD. or NEW YORK. N. Y.
QUIC KLY-DETACHABLE HINGED CLINCHERr-RING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 10, 1911. Serial No. 632,348. I
To all whom it may concerni citizen of ,the United States, residing at 15 West Ninety-sixth street, New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve. merits in Quickl Detachable Hinged Clincher-Rings, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to clincher-rings for retaining a pneumatic tire upon the rim of a vehicle-wheel, and the object of the invention is to furnish a detachable clincherring which may be removed with less difiiculty than those heretofore used, and yet held securely in place when applied to the wheel-rim.
The improvement consists in making the clincher-mug in two semi-circular halves joined at one side by a hinge and at the opposite side by a latch. One of the sections at such opposite side is provided with a longitudinal peripheral notch having a shoulder near the end and the opposed section has the latch hinged thereto and adapted to engage such shoulder. The latch is provided with means for securing it to the notched section when engaged with such shoulder, which means is preferably formed as a spring-bolt inserted longitudinally in the free end of the latch and adapted to engage a socket in the end of the notch. The top of the latch is furnished with a slot extendin to the bolt and a stud is inserted throng the slot into the bolt and provided with a head adapted to wholly cover such slot. By this construction, the means for securing the latch is readily accessible for. operation, and the covering of the slot prevents the dirt from gaining access and interfering with the operation of the stud.
The invention will be understood by reference to the annexed drawing,'in which-- Fi re 1 is an elevation of the inner side of the detachable clincher ring. Fig. 2 is a cross section of the wheel-rim with the ri 'd and detachable clincher-rings thereon. Fig. 3 shows the ends of the sections ready for adjustment to connect the latch. Fig. a shows the ends connected by the latch, the view being in section where latched through the center of the latch-bolt. Fig. 5 is an edge view of the sections with the latch con- Be it known that I, WARREN W. WARD, a
nected, as in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 shows the end of the latch carrying the bolt; Fig. 7 is a section on line 7-7 in Fig. 4; Fig. 8 is a section .on line 88 in Fig. 4; Fig. 9 is a section on line 9 9 in Fig. 4; Fig. 10 shows the outer side of the clincher-ring sections where hinged together, and Fig. 11 shows a tubular construction for the clincher-ring.
In 2, the wheel-rim A is shown with the rigi clincher-ring B upon one edge and a groove C u on the opposlte edge'to receive the detachab e clincher-ring marked a.
In Fig. 1, the sections of the ring are marked a, a, with two of their ends joined by hinge b. The opposite ends of the sectionsar'e shown in Figs. 3 and 4 formed-re 1 spectively -with a flat dowel c and a recess dl Patented May '7, 1912.
to receive the same, to center the ends of the sections upon one another and prevent lateral' derangement. The section a has the longitudinal eripheral notch e with shoulder' f near t e end of the section, and a socket 9 extended longitudinally into the opposite end of the notch to receive the locking-bolt. A latch h is jointed by hingelugs h to the end of the section a and formed with a shoulder 5 adapted to engage the farther-end of the notch e and a bolt 7' is fitted to move longitudinally within the the shoulder 7 when the ends of the sections I are abutted, as shown in Fig. 4. The free end of the latch is adapted to contact with latch and a spring m inserted in the boltsocket to press it normally outward. The end of the bolt projects from the end of the latch and is formed with bevel n upon the under side to snap into the socket 9 when p the latch is pressed into the notch e. A slot is is extended through the to of the latch to the bolt and' a screw-'stu l is inserted through the'slot and secured in the bolt for shifting the same. The stud is formed with a head 0 adapted to wholly cover the slot is, and is formed with anotch o by which-the stud can be readily shifted. The outer side of the latch is formed with a longitudinal recess p in which the head '0 of the stud is seated, thus preventing the head from'projecting at all beyond the periphery of the clincher-ring. With this construction, the free ends of the sections a, a, ma be instantly detached from one another y with- I outwardly, as shown in Fig, 3, the two parts their hinge B, and
of the ring then being-readily withdrawn from the groove C in the wheel-rim.
In applying this detachable clincher-ring, thetwo sections are opened outwardly upon fitted to'the groove 0, and their ends then brought together as shown in Fig.4, and the latch ressed down into the notch e. The springolt then engages the socket g in the end of the notch e, and the sections of the ring are securely held sary. I
',Fig. 11 shows a special construction for the body of the clincher-ring in which the outer or thicker part of the ring is tubular and the inner part made of double thickness; the whole being constructed of a circular tube rolled or stamped to press the walls into contact upon the portion which fits the groove C, and leaving the outer or thicker portion hollow, thus forming a lighter construction of ample strength to hold the tire-casing in place. With this constructiomthe hinged joints b and h would be formed by brazing or otherwise securing a plug in the tubular portion of the sect-ion -two semi-circular sections united ing them from the at the open ends of the same.
The essential feature of the invention is the construction of the clincher-ring in permanently at one side with the hinge which-permits the sections to be opened out from one another when applying them to or removgroove in thewheel-rim, and the free ends of the sections having a hinged latch adapted to secure their ends toglether.
he clincher-ring is shown of the usual 1n the groove until their removal is necescross section in the'drawings, but ma be made of any cross section to suit any w eelrim.
I amaware that a jointed clip has been used to cover the joint of a locking ring in which the ends are secured together by a turn-buckle screw; but the clip 1n such case is used to cover the joint chiefly: while the latch I employ operates as the sole locking device, and the'ring requires a peripheral shouldered notch to engage the latch firmly.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention what is claimed herein is:
l. A clincher-ring for pneumatic tires having a division with a hinge at one side and the sections at the opposite side provided with a dowel c and recess 01, one of such sections having a longitudinal peripheral notch with a shoulder at the outer end, and a socket at the inner end, and the other section having a latch hinged thereto and adapted to engage the shoulder and pro: vided with a bolt to engage the said socket.
2. A divided clincher-ring for pneumatic tires having a latch hinged upon one of the sections and adapted to engage the op site section, a bolt inserted longitudinally 1n the latch with a. spring to normally project the bolt, and a slot in thelatch at the top of the bolt, with a stud inserted through the slot into the bolt and having a head adapted to wholly cover the slot.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WARREN W. WARD. Witnesses: L. LEE,
THOMAS S. CRANE.
