WALTER V. TURNER, OF EDG-EWOOD, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 THE WESIING- HOUSE AIR BRAKE COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION 0F PENNSYLVANIA.
RETAINING-VALVE DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, WALTER V. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edgewood, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Retaining` Valve Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to retaining valves, and is more particularly adapted to be em-` ployed in connection with an automatic fluid pressure brake system for controlling the brake cylinder exhaust from the triple valve.
More especially in freight service, a retaining valve connected by a pipe to the triple valve exhaust is usually employed for holding a certain degree of pressure in the brake cylinder, so that the triple valve may be moved to release position and the auxiliary reservoir recharged without releasing the brakes, and in heavy freight service particularly on long grades, it has been proposed to employ a retaining valve adapted to hold the usual degree of pressure in the brake cylinder when turned to one position on light cars and having another position in which the retaining valve is 'adapted to hold a higher degree of pressure in the brake cylinder where the car is loaded.
The principal object of my invention is to provide an improved retaining valve device of the above character having fluid pressure operated means for varying the load on the retaining valve.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a sectional view of a retaining valve device embodying my improvement; Fig. 2, a fragmentary sectional view showing the controlling cock in position for effecting the adjustment of the retaining valve to the higher degree of pressure, and Fig. 3 a similar view showing the cock in the low pressure load position.
As shown in the drawing, the retaining valve device may comprise a casing 1 having a chamber 2, within which is mounted a weight 3 carried by the usual retaining valve 4.
Various constructions may be employed for varying the load on the valve 4, but preferably I provide a bushing 5 adapted to be secured in the casing cap 6 and extending into a chamber 7 of the weight 3. A piston 8 is iitted within the bushing and a spring 9 is interposed between the weight 3 and the Specification of Letters Patent.

piston. From the space at the outer face of said piston a passage 10 leads to a controlling cock 11 having three ports 12, 13, and l4lopening into a common central cavity15. In one position, as shown in Fig. 1, the port 14 registers with the inlet port 1G leading to the triple valve exhaust, and the port 13 registers with exhaust port 17, so that in this position the triple valve exhaust is open to the atmosphere. In the position shown in Fig. 3 port 13 registers with port 1G and a port extension 18 of port 12 registers with port 19 leading to the valve 4, so
that fluid under pressure can only escape by `lifting the weighted valve 4, the chamber 2 being provided with an atmospheric port 20, to permit the exhaust of air when the valve is lifted from its seat. Thus it will be seen that the retaining valve is subject in this position to the usual weight for retaining a certain low degree of pressure in the brake cylinder, usually about 15 pounds. When the cock 11 is' turned to the position shown in Fig. 2 the port 12 registers with port 19 and an extension port 21 of port 14 registers with port 16 and also with passage 10, so that, while opening communication to the retaining valve 4, air is also admitted to the top of piston 8 through the passage 10 and forces the piston to a seat 22 provided at the bottom of the bushing 5. By this means the spring 9 is compressed a certain definite amount and thereby the load acting on the valve 4 is increased by the action of the spring and the valve 4 will then open only when the brake cylinder pressure exceeds the load on t-he valve due to the combined action of the weight 3 and the spring 9.
It will now be apparent that I have provided a compact retaining valve structure adapted to operate in the usual manner for retaining the ordinary degree of pressure in the brake cylinder, while by simply admitting iiuid under pressure to the piston 8 the load on the retaining valve is increased a definite amount, so that a higher degree of pressure may be retained in the brake cylinder of a loaded car.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pressure retaining valve device for the brake cylinder of a Huid pressure brake system comprising a loaded valve and fluid pressure operated means for varying the load on said valve to thereby retain different degrees of pressure in the brake cylinder.
2. A pressure retaining valve device for the brake cylinder of a fluid pressure brake system comprising a cock, a loaded valve, and means operated by fluid pressure supplied upon movement of the cock for varying the load on said valve and thereby the degree of pressure retained in the brake eylinder.
3. A pressure retaining valve device for the brake cylinder of a fluid pressure brake system comprising a loaded valve, a spring adapted to act on the valve, and fluid pressure operated means adapted to compress the spring for increasing the load on the valve and thereby the pressure retained in the brake cylinder.
4. A pressure retaining valve device for the brake cylinder of a fluid pressure brake system comprising a cock, a Weighted valve, a spring adapted to act on the valve, and a piston operated by fluid pressure admitted by the movement of the cock f'oi1 compress- 25 ing said spring and thereby increasing the load on the valve.
5. In a fluid pressure brake, the Combination with a brake cylinder, of a pressure rctaining valve device for the brake cylinder 30 comprising a valve subject to the opposing pressures of the brake cylinder and a spring for regulating the degree of pressure retained in the brake cylinder and a piston operated by fluid under pressure for increns- 35 ing the load on said valve.
