Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, O'r'ro N1LssoN, of the borough of Bronx, city and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Folding Go-Carts, of which the following is a specification.

That which forms the bottom, forward end and main portions of the sides-of the present go-cart constitute four of the faces of a receptacle having rigidly connected sides and bottom and in external appearance resembling an article such as a suit case or satchel, the running gear and other go-eart features folding into the body of the article.

One of the main features of the invention relates to the construction and adaptation of side extensions of the cart for the purpose of locking the extended running gear in operative position. These features together with various others comprised in the invention are set forth in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a perspective view of a suit case or satchel in the body of which a gocart embodying the features of my invention is assumed to have been folded.

Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, a portion of the top being removed to show the folded-in parts underneath. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of Fig. 2, the end of the. case being removed.

Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the unfolded cart. Fig. 5 is an end elevation, part of the back being broken away. Fig. 6is an enlarged detail side elevation of the means for locking the running gear atone side of the cart. Figs. 7 and 8 are further detail elevations of such locking means, the former figure showing the parts in their locked position and the latter figure representing the parts in a position assumed during the operation of folding.

This tilting foot rest may be held in its" horizontal or its inclined position by a cooperating spring finger 6 and notched plate 6 one on each side. 4

7, 7 carried by a frame comprising a'longitudinal bar 8 and rigid therewith transverse;

9, 9, each of which latter is fulcrumed on a corresponding pin 9 the axes of which are disposed longitudinally' of and at the side of the cart. Axle 10 for the forward wheel 7 is rigid with bar 8 but axle 10 for the rear Wheel is adapted to be shifted lengthwise of a slot 11 in a rearward extension 11 of the bar 8, the axle being at the forward end of the slot for folding and being shifted to the rear end thereof when the cart is in use to prevent the backward tipping of the loaded cart. In this rearward position the axle may be seated 1n a transverse notch 11 of the slot 11 By reason of the fulcrumed. connection may be swung from a position inside the case or cart body, see Fig. 2, corresponding to a folded condition, to the position indicated in Fig. 4, corresponding to an unfolded condition, suitable slots 12 being provided for the passage of the transverse bars 9 of the frame.

In order to lock the wheel-carrying frames when swung out under the cart, each bar 9 thereof is provided with a pivotally mounted catch or dog 13 adapted to engage with a locking pin 14 extending transversely from a corresponding toggle bar 15 jointed to a fulcrum bar 16 adapted to turn about the corresponding aforementioned pin 9 Each pin 14 isconfined in its movement from a locking to an unlocking position and Vice versa, by a slot 17 in a fixture 18 while, the two

16, 16 at each side are pivoted, see 19, to an upper side extension 20 thereby permitting the latter to be moved from its folded position in which it lies flat against the bottom of the cart body (the two fulcrum bars then lying against the corresponding side of the latter) upward and outward on top of the side 2, thus drawing the locking pins '14 on toggle bars 15 to their locking positions in engagement with dogs 13. Each side extension 20 may be held in its extended, corresponding to the aforesaid locking, position by means of a corresponding bracket 21 hinged to the extension and adapted to engage with a button or pin 21 on the side bar 22 of the unfolded top cover 23 of the case.

Each such side bar 22 is linked to the contiguous side 2, see link 24, in such a manner as to permit the top cover 23 of the case to be swung over from a position in which it constitutes a part of the case, see Fig. 1, to a position in which one end thereof hooks under the cart body see Fig. 4, each link 24 being provided with a stop 24 adapted to abut against the end of the cart body thereby defining the rearwardly inclined position of the case top. Preferably, the inner space of this top is closed by a panel 25 hinged to the upper end of the inclined or unfolded top and adapted to be swung outward and forward to constitute a canopy or sun shade, links 26 being provided to hold the canopy in its extended position.

The cart body is provided with a hinged back board 27 which may be dropped down to an inclined position being there held by tension pieces, see 27 27 A handle for the cart provided with squared end extensions 28 28 slidably mounted in corresponding bearings 28 28 may be shifted with a cart body comprising rigid side and comprising extensions of the side and bottom portions thereof, of -wheel-carrying frames having a hinged connection with said'side ortions and adapted to swing from a position within said body to a position at the side thereof.

'2. In a folding go-cart, the combination with a cart body comprising rigid side and bottom portions, of wheel-carrying frames having a hinged connection with said side portions and adapted to swing from a position within said body to a position at the side thereof and laterally foldable side extensions whose axes coincide with the respective axes of the wheel-carrying frames for locking said frames in their extended position.

3. In a folding go-cart, the combination of a cart body having a hinged foot rest at one end and a hinged back board at the other end, wheel-carrying frames ada ted to swing from a position in the cart b0 y to a position at the side thereof, hinged side extensions, locking dogs von said frames, toggle bars jointed to said side extensions, locking pins extending from the toggle bars, a cart body cover linked thereto and adapted to be swung to a cart-back-forming position and hinged locking brackets mounted on said side extensions and adapted to engage with the swung out cover.
