NOZZLE FOR HYDRAULIC MOTORS.

To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, W'iLLiau A. DOBLE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of San Francisco, county of 4San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nozzles for Hydraulic i/lotors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to nozzles for discharging a varying amountof water for power and other purposes, and is ofthe type described in my prior Patent 660,789, granted October 30, 1900. A nozzle of the type referred to is provided with a needle or a core-piece to regulate the discharge thereof. In such an apparatus where the nozzle, and, therefore, the needle, is large and heavy, the weight of the over-hanging needle causes friction, and the operating mechanism also has a tendency to press the needle to one side.
One of the objects of this invention, therefore, is to provide an outboard bearing for the needle and thus support it against side thrust.
Other objects will appear from the detail description in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the nozzle and its operating mechanism, the` wheel being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is an end elevation parts being omitted.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a nozzle of the form described in my prior patent, which nozzle has a portion 11 curved or bent aside. A boss 12 is formed on the nozzle body and is provided with a suitable bushing in which slides the shank or stem of the regulating needle or core-piece 13, the bushing being provided with a suitable packing to make a water-tight joint. Suitable wing flanges 14 are formed on the boss 12 and the nozzle so as to form an outside bracket. A yoke 15 is provided with attaching portions 14 by means of which the yoke is arranged to be bolted to the wing flanges 141. The yoke is of ribbed construction and is provided with an outboard bearing 16, which is adapted to receive the end 17 of the needle shank. An outwardly or upwardly extending arm 18 is formed integral with the yoke 15 and forms a stand for the hand wheel 19. The hand wheel is provided with an internally threaded collar 20,
-which is rotatively mounted in the trunnion 21 which is pivoted to the arm 18 at 22. The collar 2O is mounted for free rotation in the trunnion 21, but is restrained against axial movement. The elements Q3 of a double lever are pivoted at 241 on the opposite sides of a yoke 15 and connected to a `sleeve or collar 26 on the needle shank by means of links 25. The upper ends of the lever elements are pivotally connected to a bar 27, which has a threaded portion 9.8 having a threaded engagement with the collar 20.
The position of the needle 13 can be adjusted bythe hand wheel 19. The end of the stem 17 is guided by the out-board bearing 16, and in` this way the needle is supported against side thrust. The double construction of the lever 28 and the links 25, permits the power to be applied equally on bothsides of the needle, and thus a direct pull will be obtained, reducing the side thrust to a minimum. By making the yoke and the arm 18 in a single casting which can be directly bolted to the wing flanges on the nozzle, a very cheap and substantial construction is obtained and at the same time a substantial stand for the hand wheel is provided. By means of this construction also it is always insured that the parts will be in alinement.
The yoke 15 is made either U-shape-d with the edges of the flanges bored to fit the gland 30 or D-shaped, the D connection being bored for the gland.
It is obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from this invention, and it is, therefore, to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to the specilic construction shown and described.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. The combination with a nozzle, of a needle extending through the wall of the nozzle and arranged to control the discharge thereof, a yoke secured to said nozzle, an .outboard bearing in said yoke for said needle, and means on said yoke to operate said needle.
2. The combination with a nozzle, of a needle extending through the wall of the nozzle and arranged to control the discharge thereof, a yoke secured to said nozzle, an outboard bearing in said yoke for said needle, an arm extending from said yoke, a. lever pivoted to said yoke and operatively connected to said needle, and a hand wheel on said arm and operatively connected with said lever.
3. The combination with a nozzle, of a needle extending through the wall of the nozzle and arranged to control the discharge thereof, a yoke having an outwardly extending arm, and secured to said nozzle, an outboard bearing in said yoke for said needle, a hand wheel on said arm, and means operatively Connecting said hand Wheel with said needle.
l. The combination with a nozzle, of a needle extending through the wall of the nozzle and arranged to control the discharge thereof, a yoke having an outwardly extending arm, and secured to said nozzle, an outboard bearing in said yoke for said needle, a hand wheel on said arm, a lever pivoted on said yoke and connected to said needle, and a bar pivoted to said lever and having a threaded engagement with said hand wheel.
5. The combination with a nozzle having a. portion curved or hent aside to reeeive a needle and provided with a. bracket., of a needle extending through the curved wall of the nozzle and arranged to regulate the discharge thereof, a yoke bolted to said bracket and provided with an integral out,- wardly extending arm, an outboard b ar ing in said yoke for Said needle, a hand wheel on Said arm, and means operatively eonneeting said hand wheel and needle.
G. The combination with a nozzle, of a, needle extending through the wall of the nozzle and arranged to control the diseharge thereof7 a. yoke having an outwardly extending arm, and secured to said nozzle. an outboard bearing in said yoke for said nee dle, a hand wheel on said arm. a` double lever having its elements pivoted on opposite sides of the said yoke and operatively oonneeted with said .needle and hand wheel.
