HAND-'ernannten AIR-PUMP.
To all whom 'it mayconcern:
Beit known that I, FRANK C. VIRTUE, ofl
the city 'of Toronto, county of York, Provmce of Ontario, in the Dominion of Cani ada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand- Operated -Air- Pmpsy and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The invention relates to improvements in hand operated air pumps as described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanylng drawings that form part of the same. l
The invention consists essentially in the novel construction and arran ement of parts `screwed to the upper threaded end of the whereby a volume of air within a tubular casin is :forced into lan annular space surroun ing acylindrical plunger operating in said casing, by the inward movement of said plunger and is further compressed by the outward movement of said plunger and further supply vis coincidently'` drawn into said casin .l
The obJect O the-invention is to devise a hand o erated pump'by means of which air may e pumped into motor-car-tires at suiicient pressure.
. ln the drawings Figure 1 is aperspective view of. a'pump constructed in accordance' -wlth thls mvention.: Fi 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view o the pump broken lntermediate of its length and showin lthe plunger` in)v its innermost position. Fig.A 3 1sv an enlarged vertical sectional view of the pump broken intermediate of its length and showing the plunger partly drawn out. Like. numerals ofreference indicate corresponding parts in each ligure.
Referring to th drawings, lis a tubular. 'casing threaded externally at the ends and having a lug2l projecting from its outer walls adj acentto the top, said 111g having an Y 'to passag 3 therein communicating with the interior of the casin air 4 is a nip le threadeinto thelug 2. at the Outer en of the' passa e 3 and forming .the connection for the ilexi le tube 5.
6 is the base of the (pumpthreaded on to thelower threaded .en of `the casing 1 and having a lug 7 'projecting laterally there- Om. s
8 is the inlet passage. formed in th ratenteanay 7,1912.
12 .is a disk of leather or other suitable l flexible material resting on the top surface of the base 6 and covering the inner end 'of the vair passage 8 andhavin a hole 13 in the center thereof. The dis 12 yforms a base and communicating with the interior valve to close the air inlet passage and also yforms a gasket against which the lower end oasin 1 said ca havin a central circular `orifice 15 vtherethrough \and an upwardly extending annular flange 16.
17 is a tubular plungerl extending through the oricel in the cap A and slidably en'- gaging the flange 16.
18 1s a circular late sealing the lower endv of the plunger 1 and projectin laterally beyond the outer wall thereof an having a central threaded stud 19 projectingdown- Wardly therefrom.
20 is'a cupped washer fitted over-the plate i 18 and havingthe upturned edge 21 extending between the projecting edge of the plate 18 and the inner wall of the casing 1.
22 is a plate secured on the stud 19 by the` nut 23 and engaging the under side ofthe washer.. 20.'.
24 is adisk closing the upper end of the lunger 17 having a central threaded -or1- Eco 25 in which is secured the threaded shank of the handle 26.v 27 `is a cylindrical sleeve having its lower end 28 reduced to iit snugly around the' plunger 17 and having a lateral flange 29 at its u per end.v The flange, 29 extends outwar y over the top end of the casing 1.
and a 4gasket 30 .encircling the sleeve 27 forms anv air tight joint between the sleeve 27 and casingl.
31 is awasher clamped between the top side ofthe Hangs 29 of the sleeve. 27 and the inner side'o the cap 14 and having its mner edge ou ped inwardly'between the` sleeve 27 and p unger 17. 32 are'foot plates lunged to the base 6 los y and are adapted to fold up neatly when the wardly by means of the handle 26 and a supply of air is drawn into the casing l through the air passage 8, the Valve 12 lifting slightly to allow7 the ingress. The
downward movement of the plunger, compresses the air in the casing l, forcing the valve 12 to close the inlet passage. As the compressed air cannot escape it is forced past the cupped Washer 20 into the annular space between the plunger 17 and casing 1, the pressure being held securely bythe cupped washer 3l. The air iows from the annular space within the casing through the passage 3 and tube 5 to the tire. The next upward movement of the plunger further compresses the air in the annular space and forces it through the passage 3 into the tire against the pressure therein.
The area of the annular space is comparatively small, consequently the air may be forced at a very high pressure int-o the tire. The sleeve 27 holds the washer 81 in position andthe reduced inner end engages the projecting portion of the plate 18 and forms a positive stop to limit the upward movement of the plunger 14 and to guard the washer 20 from injury.
What I claim as my invention is:
In a hand operated air pump, a tubular casing having an inlet air passage at the bottom, and an outlet passage adjacent to the top, a valve closing said inlet passage, a cylindrical plunger operating in said casing and forming an annular chamber therein, a cupped washer on the inner end of said plunger, an annular cap closing the top of said casing and fitting snugly around said plunger, a cylindrical sleeve of larger internal diameter than the exterior of said plunger 'having a reduced inner end engaging said plunger and an outwardly extending lateral ange at the outer end, a gasket arranged between said flange and the top of the casing, and a cupped washer having its inner edge cupped inwardly and extending between the said cylindrical sleeve and said plunger.
,Signed at the city of Toronto, county of York, Province of Ontario, Canada, this 2nd day of March 1911.
