durable pin for locating the block of the last with relation to the body portion.
Heretofore cylindrical dowel pins have been employed, and when these are made of wood they shrink, become loose and drop out. When they are made of metal they are much more expensive and do not present the width which is obtained by the use of my improved centering staple. In addition to the centering staple employed by me in the front portion of the block and body portion of the last, I also preferably employ a spring dowel pin for the rear portion of said block and body portion of the last.
The invention consists in a two-part last of the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved last. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings 5 is the body portion of the last and 6 the block. 7
7 is my improved centering staple, one leg 8 of which projects into a hole 9 extending from the top to the bottom of'the body portion 5. The other leg 10 terminates in a point 11 which extends into the body portion 5 and is provided with prongs 12, 12 which project laterally from the pointed end of the leg 10 into the body portion 5, holding the staple 7 in position in the body portion. A pin 13 extends transversely of the block 6 and is adapted to bear against the leg 8 of the staple 7 thus giving strength to the block 6 to resist pressure thereon tending to make the same move longitudinally thereof upon the body portion 5.
In manufacturing my two-part last and applying the improved centering staple thereto, a hole 9 is drilled into the last and extends upwardly into that portion which subsequently forms the block 6 to the top of the recess 14: into which the closed end of the staple projects in the completed last. At the same time the hole 15 for the spring dowel pin 16 is made, said spring-actuated dowel pin 16 being of a form well known to those skilled in this art. The last is then sawed into two pieces forming the block 6 and the body portion 5, and the leg 8 of the staple is driven into the hole 9 until the" pointed end 11 projects downwardly into the body portion of the last and the prongs 12 project laterally from the leg 10 and pointed end 11 into said body portion. The staple is held during this driving operation with the two legs 8 and 10 lying in a plane extending longitudinally of the last. A hole is bored into the block transversely thereof and the pin 13 driven into this hole in such a position that it will bear against the back of the leg 8 when the block is in position on the body portion. At the same time the recess 14 is cut out of the body portion, so that the closed end 17 of the staple may project thereinto when the parts 5 and 6 are assembled as shown in Fig. 1.
It will be noted that great strength is presented by the staple, both laterally of the last and longitudinally thereof, that the same is easily attached to the last, and when so attached is very difficult to remove.
In utilizing my improved last, assuming the parts to be in the relative positions indicated in Fig. 1, the block is removed from the body portion by inserting a pin in the upper end of the hole 1.5 and depressing the dowel pin 16 sufficiently to allow the block 6 to be disengaged therefrom and from the staple 7 and thus removed from the last. In attaching the block to the body portion of the last, the block is placed downwardly upon the body portion with the closed end 17 of the staple 7 projecting into the recess 14L in the block 6. Said block is then pressed downwardly at the rear end thereof to engage and depress the spring-actuated dowel pin 16 until said dowel pin springs into the hole 15 in the block 6, whereupon the parts are locked together in the position illustrated in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
1. A last in two parts, viz., a body portion and a block, and a staple fast to said body portion with its closed end projecting into said block, the legs of said staple being in a plane extending longitudinally of said last and means to lock said block to said body portion.
2. A last in two parts, via, a body portion and a block, and a staple fast to said body portion with its closed end projecting into said block, one of the legs of said staple being longer than the other and means to lock said block to said body portion.
3. A last in two parts, viz., a body portion and a block, and a staple fast to said body portion with its closed end projecting into said block, one of the legs of said staple terininating in a point and means to lock said block to said body portion.
4. A last in two parts, viz., a body portion and a block and a staple fast to said body "portion with its closed end projecting into said block, one of the legs of said staple terminating in a point and a prong extending laterally from said pointed leg into the body portion of said last and means to lock said block to said body portion.
5. A last in two parts, viz., a body portion and a block, and a staple fast to said body portion with its closed end projecting into said block and a pin in said block adapted to bear against said staple and means to lock said block to said body portion.
6. A last in two parts, viz. a body portion and a block, a staple, one leg of said staple projecting into a hole extending from the top to the bottom of said body portion, the other leg of said staple tern'iinating in a point extending into said body portion and a prong extending laterally from said pointed leg into said body portion, the closed end of said staple projecting into a recess in the under side of said block and means to lock said block to said body portion.
