THOMAS DE WITT, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO JOI-IN T. MAX- SON, OF DE WITT, IOWA.
, l Letters Patent No. 102,512, dated May 3, 1870.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
NOM
The Schedule referred tp in these Letters Patent and making part of the same tion and arrangement of a \\'asliiiig-inacliine as herein-v after set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention 'appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the lannexed drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section, and
Figure 2 a plan view of my machine.
lFigure 3 is a bottom view ofthe plunger, and
Figure 4 is a perspective viewof the rod connecting the lever-power with the plunger.
A represents a bench, having two upright posts or standards B B, between which a square box, O, is rmly secured. v
This box'is, on its inside, near the top, provided with ribs or cleats ,a a, forming a continuous line around the box; and from said ribs or cleats other ribs, b b, extend vertically downward to the bottom, one or more on each side of the box.
Inside of the box is placed a square block or plunger, D, of such size as to move freely up and down wit-hin the ribs b b.
This plunger is, on its under side in the center, provided with a polygonal-shaped Bange, d, and around this ange is a series of holes, e e, inclined from the center outward and downward, as shown in tig. 1.
On top of the plunger D is placed a flat rod, E, hav-l ing burfeet in the shape of a cross, which are secured to the plunger.
This rody passes upward and is pivoted in a mortise on 'a level', G, which is pivoted at the upper end of one. of the posts or standards B, and extends to near the opposite side of the box C.
At this-.end of the lever G is a pivoted rod or bnr, I, connecting it with another lever, 111,' which, is pivoted at the upper end of the other post or standard B,
and extends above the lever'G, beyond the opposite side of the box, forming, at its outer end, a handle for operatingthe machine; v
By this means, I have acompound-lever power applied to the plunger'.
At the sides of the box D, on the inside, areplaced lugs or projections i i, a suitable distance. above the ribs or bars a a, forthe purpose of confining two slats .I J, which run along the ends of the box, to prevent the plunger from coming out, and, at the sanne time, prevent the suds from splashing out.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and-desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination and arrangement of the bench A, posts B B, box C, with the plunger D, constructed with inclined openings, and under flange d, connecting rods E I, lever G Hand slats J J, all as showuand described.
